Poll: Racial misgivings of whites an Obama issue

WASHINGTON (AP) - Deep-seated racial misgivings could cost Barack Obama the White House if the election is close, according to an AP-Yahoo News poll that found one-third of white Democrats harbor negative views toward blacks—many calling them "lazy," "violent" or responsible for their own troubles.

The poll, conducted with Stanford University, suggests that the percentage of voters who may turn away from Obama because of his race could easily be larger than the final difference between the candidates in 2004—about 2.5 percentage points.

Certainly, Republican John McCain has his own obstacles: He's an ally of an unpopular president and would be the nation's oldest first-term president. But Obama faces this: 40 percent of all white Americans hold at least a partly negative view toward blacks, and that includes many Democrats and independents.

More than a third of all white Democrats and independents—voters Obama can't win the White House without—agreed with at least one negative adjective about blacks, according to the survey, and they are significantly less likely to vote for Obama than those who don't have such views.

Fodder for the "If you don't vote for Obama, you're a racist," crowd.

BUT, note this: "Lots of Republicans harbor prejudices, too, but the survey found they weren't voting against Obama because of his race. Most Republicans wouldn't vote for any Democrat for president—white, black or brown."

Well we all know about them white guys - especially if they’re from the south.

It’s not a racial slur cause our media says it’s not. :D

That is key and is what the MSM keeps glossing over. They call Republicans the party of rednecks, but somehow refuse to acknowledge the bigotry within their own party.

“Most Republicans wouldn’t vote for any Democrat for president—white, black or brown”

Exactly! Plus, I’m not voting against Obama because he’s black. I have no problem with a black person being President. I am voting against Obama because he is a pro-abortion/infanticide socialist.

Just setting everyone up so guilt can be slung in the increasing likelihood that he loses due to his unsuitability, not his race. Here, pick a card:

How many of these articles are they going to write? Okay, we’ve got it. You don’t vote for The One and you’re a racist. I’m willing to live with that.

Of course the fact that he is a marxist has little to do with how the election will turn out.

Correction: Racial misgivings of DEMOCRATIC whites an Obama issue. Øbama losing 17-19% of his base is the elephant in the room this election.

Have you heard any hand-wringing from the MSM about this? What would the coverage be if McCain was losing 17-19% of HIS base??

If opposing huge tax increases, weak on defending the country and nationalization of healthcare and energy makes me a racist, then so be it.

When McCain’s ad blasted Obama for being friendly with Raines, the media cried racism. When the 527 ad come out blasting Obama for having ties to Rev. Wright and Bill Ayes, the press will be there crying racism.

And of course the obligatory, non-biased AP suggestion that the evil McCain is an “ally” of the evil Bush. The “if the Messiah loses it’s because whites are racist scum” meme will gather momentum throughout the rest of the election cycle. Everyone knows the “flyover crowd” is far too stupid to judge Obama on his merits.

Exactly. When you see that much of a mismatch then the question should be who’s being the sheeple voting on account of race.

The Worst Candidate in History and here comes the excuses . . . so very predictable, especially when it comes from the Cafferty types who wouldn’t live in a black neighborhood for anything.

No matter how the race turns out, we’re going to be considered racists. We might as well win.

“This should make white folks feel comfortable voting for McCain on race alone. After all 98% of Blacks are voting for Obama because he’s black.”

The fact is that if white against black racism was as prevalent as some would have you believe, Obama wouldn’t stand a chance at getting elected president. In actuality there are certainly some whites, and some hispanics, and possibly some from other backgrounds who will not vote for Obama because of he is 50% black. However, there are also likely a significant number of whites who will vote for Obama specifically because he is 50% black.
