ESPANOLA Barack Obama recapped the nightmarish week in the U.S. economy, accused rival John McCain of being indecisive and out of touch and made a direct appeal to northern New Mexico's Hispanic voters during a sun-drenched rally here Thursday afternoon that drew thousands of backers.
"We are in the midst of the most serious financial crisis in a generation perhaps the worst since the Great Depression," Obama said on the packed Plaza de Española, where a sea of fans sporting sunglasses, sunburns and red-white-and-blue "Change" posters waited for hours to hear the Democratic presidential candidate speak.
"We can't change direction with a new driver who wants to follow the same map," Obama said as he continued to paint McCain as an ally of the economic policies of the unpopular Bush administration.
~~snip~~
While Thursday's event drew plenty of Norteños, it also attracted plenty of backers from other parts of the state. The campaign said the crowd was estimated by fire officials at 9,500 close to the total population of Española, though some observers pegged it as somewhat smaller.
"What we have seen in the last few days is nothing less than the final verdict on an economic philosophy that has completely failed."
Obama appealed to Hispanic voters, who likely played a big role in his decision to head to Rio Arriba County, as he ended his roughly 35-minute speech.
"Knock on doors. Make some phone calls. Talk to your neighbors. To the Hispanic community: I want you to start actually voting your numbers. Start flexing your muscles. Right here in New Mexico, you'll be the difference maker," Obama said. "If you will roll up your sleeves with me ... I promise you this: We will not just win New Mexico. We will win this general election."

I have no doubt Richardson was only partially kidding. The RATS have a record of massive vote fraud in NM. I suspect we will lose the state, our R seat in the Senate and District 2, also. Going from a Bush win with one Republican senator and two representatives, we will end up with just one representative. Only part of that is due to the Hispanic vote -- we had an intra-party squabble that left the conservative candidate in a race against a far-left enviro-radical. Unfortunately, with the Hispanic plus Native American population greater than 56% of the population, a conservative (Steve Pearce) has little chance. I made a nice donation to his campaign, but I'm not hopeful.
NM PING!
Figures! I as a native central American (Nicaragua) am just appalled by the lack of brain cells these Hispanics supporting the Dems are showing. The reason every single Hispanic is living in the US is because of the failed liberal, socialist and communist policies of their home country’s government. I cannot stand this!
Your background gives more weight to the wisdom of your words. Well said, sir. Thanks.
While responsible people are fixing the problem, Obama and his Fannie Mae cronies are playing politics with the economy.

Funny I thought it was because President Bush backed by Senator McCain promised and tried to push through amnesty against the wishes of their own party. That and the refusal of President Bush to secure the country's borders. Think that may have something to do with why they are here?
You would have to go back centuries to find a reason for a whole lot of NM and CO Hispanics being here. Many families were here before the anglos ever looked this direction.
That said, there is an influx of Hispanic immigrants, legal or not, in the Southwest.
Most of northern NM was formerly inhabited by Castilian Hispanics from before statehood. Recent immigrants are from Mexico and fit in because they speak the same language though there are conflicts because of gangs and drug dealers.
The area is the poorest part of the state and Anglos generally aren’t welcome. Espanola is also considered one of the heroin capitals of the United States; the rate of substance abuse there is three times the state average and fifteen times the national average.
I am proud to have come to the US legally and by the law. I became a citizen on January 21st, 2006 and celebrate it like a birthday every year.
People need to have a reason to leave their homes, it does not matter how crummy a place they live is, they will always be attached to it. I do not know if you have visited many 3rd world countries, or developing countries for that matter, but conditions in those places are so hopeless, that they rather take their chances with the most vile of human trafficking or throw themselves at the mercy of the Atlantic.
Our borders should be protected and they must, that is one of the policies I disagree with Pres Bush and McCain, but they did not cause millions of illegal immigrants, if you check the records the biggest influx of immigrants after the communist wars in Latin America happened during the 90’s, guess who was in charge back then.
Yes, a whole lot, not all.
Congratulations on your citizenship. I admire those who came to us the legal way. My best friend became a citizen years ago.
When the president (backed by McCain), promises amnesty while telling Americans, "see you at the bill signing" he is indeed signaling illegals to continue the invasion. I live in a suburb of Phoenix and we catch them by the truckload here weekly. They haven't stopped coming because they know that unlike their home country America does not secure or defend our borders. So I'd say the actions of McCain and Bush has caused millions of illegals to invade America.
There are still a lot of socially conservative, traditional Catholic, Hispanic families in Rio Arriba county, and a few Pueblo Indians who vote Republican, even though most of them are registered Democrats. I wish I could say that the twenty or so Anglos living here are as conservative as me, but most of them are liberals, the worst of the worst. Obama was preaching to the choir. Still, I think McCain will take New Mexico.
The best chance McCain does have is with those families who "cling to their bible and guns" and any McCain vote will help. The rest of the area is infested with liberals from back east and enviro-nutters who live off either their daddy's money or government programs. I know I lived there for 13 years but have been out of there for more than 15.

I wonder the same thing. I wonder if they understand the system they ran from any more than the one they run to. Carlos Mencia did a show and tried his best to get a Mexican American to just admit that ‘Mexico sucks!’. The guy just couldn’t do it.
“Push for Hispanics (9,500 at Obama NM Rally)”
Who says we can’t round ‘em all up?
/sarcasm
If you don’t like those numbers, organize people in your state to go to appearances like the one described and ask him questions designed to make him look bad:

You really don’t get it do you? Illegal immigration has always been rampant. You cannot deny that there have always been thousands upon thousands of people who come here all the time and it does not matter if Pres Bush is in power or anyone else for that matter.
The fact is that our border has been unsecured for the entirety of its existence, and you cannot blame Pres Bush or the next president, it’s a condition that we have turned a blind eye to for too long and the size and the character of the invading population at this time is unacceptable. We should have said enough decades ago, now we are attempting to make up for lost time and the resistance to that condition has just too many communists, socialists, and what is worst our own liberals backing it.
I agree with you that the package Pres Bush and McCain have been backing up is something revolting, there is no question about that. Agree with me though, that illegal immigration has always existed no matter who the president is.
