Military Voter Guide

As Election Day nears, we need help registering our military members to vote. Many are already registered, but some are having problems getting information on how to receive their ballots. If you know any military members, please refer them to their Command Liaison, or click on each State for more information.

All information provided below is from FVAP (Federal Voting Assistance Program). If you are currently living abroad and not military, you can also use this website to register to vote and receive an absentee ballot.

There are rumors going around online that we want to dispel:

First, there is not a shortage of absentee ballots.  We know this to be true as we contacted FVAP personally.

Second, military personnel cannot vote after November 4th. Like every other American, Election day is still November 4th, 2008. Certain States will allow your ballot to be received after the election date, but most expect the envelope to be postmarked either the actual date or the day before the election (November 3rd, 2008).

Third, Voteforchange.com is not a government affiliated voter registration site. The Obama  campaign owns and runs this particular site where voters can register to vote. The McCain campaign has a similar set-up via their website. Again, neither of these campaigns are affiliated with FVAP.

If you are a military spouse or dependent, please make sure you have the correct "home of records" for your active duty member.

Regarding the table below, information is more detailed at the various websites. Please be sure to carefully read the instructions.

They found Him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the teachers, both listening to them and asking them questions. —Luke 2:46

The poster in the church hallway pictured a young boy dressed in Middle Eastern clothing, with Bible in hand, walking up a hill to church. The caption read: “Jesus was a good Christian boy who went to Sunday school every Sunday.”

As a Jewish boy, Jesus didn’t go to Sunday school and church on Sunday, so the poster was inappropriate. But the picture is correct in portraying Jesus’ desire to be in His Father’s temple to listen to His teaching.

When Jesus was 12, He went with His parents to Jerusalem for the Feast of the Passover (Luke 2:41-42). On their way home, His parents realized He was not with them. When they returned, they “found Him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the teachers, both listening to them and asking them questions” (v.46).

Jesus had the heart of a learner-disciple. Isaiah writes of Him as Jehovah’s Servant: “The Lord God . . . awakens Me morning by morning, He awakens My ear to hear as the learned. The Lord God has opened My ear” (50:4-5). In His humanity, the Son was open to learn from His Father.

Jesus’ example challenges us to be listeners to God’s Word. We too can become learner-disciples if we’ll keep our hearts open to God’s teaching.

A Proclamation by the President of the United States of America

On National POW/MIA Recognition Day, we honor the brave and patriotic Americans who were held as prisoners of war, and we remember those who are still missing in action. For their valor and selfless devotion to protect the country they love, our Nation owes them a debt we can never fully repay. On this day we underscore our commitment and pledge to those who are still missing in action and to their families that we will not rest until we have achieved the fullest possible accounting for every member of our Armed Forces missing in the line of duty.

To observe this important day, the National League of Families POW/MIA flag is flown over the Capitol, the White House, the World War II Memorial, the Korean War Veterans Memorial, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, and other locations across our country. The flag is a solemn reminder of our Nation's enduring obligation and promise to our courageous service members who remain missing and a tribute to those who have been imprisoned while serving their country in conflicts around the world.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, GEORGE W. BUSH, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim Friday, September 19, 2008, as National POW/MIA Recognition Day. I call upon the people of the United States to join me in honoring and remembering all former American prisoners of war and those missing in action for their valiant service to our Nation. I also call upon Federal, State, and local government officials and private organizations to observe this day with appropriate ceremonies and activities.

~ National POW/MIA Recognition Day ~

As you entered the banquet hall this evening, you may have noticed a small table here in a place of honor near our head table. It is set for one. Please let me explain. The military caste is filled with symbology. This table is our way of symbolizing the fact that members of our profession of arms are missing from our midst. They are commonly called P.O.W./M.I.A., we call them "Brothers". They are unable to be with us this evening, and so we remember them because of their incarceration.

This TABLE set for one is small - symbolizing the frailty of one prisoner alone against his oppressors.

The TABLECLOTH is white - symbolizing the purity of their intentions to respond to their country's call to arms. REMEMBER!

The single ROSE displayed in a vase reminds us of the families and loved ones of our comrades-in-arms who keep the faith awaiting their return. REMEMBER!

The RED RIBBON tied so prominently on the vase is reminiscent of the red ribbon worn on the lapel and breasts of thousands who bear witness to their unyielding determination to demand a proper accounting of our missing. REMEMBER!

A SLICE OF LEMON is on the bread plate to remind us of their bitter fate. REMEMBER!

There is SALT upon the bread plate - symbolic of the families' tears as they wait. REMEMBER!

The GLASS is inverted - they can not toast with us this night. REMEMBER!

The CHAIR - the chair is empty - they are not here. REMEMBER!

REMEMBER - all of you who served with them and called them comrades, who depended upon their might and aid, and relied upon them, for surely, they have not forsaken you.
