Obama denies Raines ties
Politico ^ | September 18, 2008 | Ben Smith

Posted on 09/18/2008 5:44:59 PM PDT by RatsDawg

The campaign puts out a statement from former Fannie Mae chief Franklin Raines, disowning ties to Obama, after a McCain ad attacked him for the ties.

The Washington Post reported -- with the kind of blind sourcing that suggests the source was Raines -- that Raines had "taken calls from Barack Obama's presidential campaign seeking his advice on mortgage and housing policy matters."

Raines said in the statement through the campaign, "I am not an advisor to Barack Obama, nor have I provided his campaign with advice on housing or economic matters."

Obama spokesman Bill Burton added an attack:

This is another flat-out lie from a dishonorable campaign that is increasingly incapable of telling the truth. Frank Raines has never advised Senator Obama about anything -- ever. And by the way, someone whose campaign manager and top advisor worked and lobbied for Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac shouldn't be throwing stones from his seven glass houses.

UPDATE: McCain spokesman Brian Rogers notes that Obama didn't contradict the claim when it first appeared in the Post.

There are so many of Obama’s friends (that he didn’t know) under his bus that they are going to have to build an overhead ramp just to get it off of them with a tow truck.

“So, Obama is saying that the Washington Post lied about Raines”

HAven’t you noticed??
The New new, newest Obama meme is:

“McCain LIES!! Palin LIES!! Republicans LIE!! EVERYBODY LIES!!!”,
and it has been since last Friday. There were DOZENS of diaries on KOS explaining this, and how it would work.

Ultimo Deflecto, because someone KNEW there was going to be a rush of bad news hitting Obama, methinks...

A Freeper has added a link to a FR thread on Franklin Raines' wiki page with a CACHED page proving that Raines was indeed a Chief Adviser to Obama.

Only problem with that one is that the reference was added over the past couple of days.

Never attended Columbia or Harvard either.

No records exist to prove he took any classes or penned a thesis.

Obama like his mother and her parents are ghosts.

Whoah! This is the first I’ve heard of this. Tell me more!

If Bush had any balls

That's so damn offensive to the truth. The man is responsible for invading and eliminating two brutal dictatorships, liberating millions, protecting America and the free world by hunting down terrorists all over the globe. A job he's done it in the face of hysterical near constant outcry from all over the world. And when the Iraq war went south and the casualties mounted and his popularity plummeted, Bush stood his ground and vowed to fight for victory, when pretty much every other politician in Washington ran for the hills.

There are a lot of fair criticisms of Bush, but that he lacks guts is not one of them.

Evidence that the Obama campaign projects a lot.

Won’t work and I doubt it’ll shift the polls, period. The only media who will pick this up will be Fox and talk radio. It’s a different set of rules for republicans.

Nope. Wait 'til Rush's millions find out about this tomorrow. Rush is not just "talk radio" anymore. Besides, with both Bush and McCain on hard record having expressed their concerns about the Fannies long ago, and the Dems on hard record blocking their efforts to get some accountability, this is a win/win/win for the GOP.

“Franklin Raines is currently one of Barack Obama’s chief economic advisers.”

From the Wikipedia entry on Franklin Raines. The Obama campaign only lies when their mouths are moving. But then, they’re Democrats, and lying has been the MO of the Democratic Party since Clinton.
