NASHVILLE – The son of state Rep. Mike Kernell has been contacted by authorities in connection with a probe into the hacking of personal e-mail of vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin, Kernell told The Tennessean.

Kernell, a Memphis Democrat, said his 20-year-old son David had been contacted by authorities investigating the hacking of Palin’s personal e-mail account, the newspaper reported on its Web site this afternoon.

The FBI and the Secret Service started a formal investigation Wednesday into the hacking, according to the Associated Press.

David Kernell is a student at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville.

Libs are claiming it isn’t hacking since the ‘hacker’ guessed the password. UH HUH.

As someone who has personally "hacked" thousands of yahoo IDs and still has a few hundred I can tell you from personal experience that it really isn't hacking in the classical sense. There is actually a regular subculture of folks who troll yahoo looking for IDs to collect and he probably got the idea from someone who does it on a regular basis.

Without making this overly long, there are yahoo ids that are collected and traded called "rares" because they are ids that can no longer be made. When yahoo first started you could make IDs using capital letters, multiple underscores, punctuation and even ASCII codes. In order to make themselves look bigger than they really are Yahoo never deleted these ids when people abandoned them so untold millions of these dormant ids are sitting out there waiting to be found. Software has existed for years that allows you to take a list of ids and passwords, log into yahoo, try for a match and, if you find a match, log the id and password so you could come in later and retrieve it. The method that was used on the palin account was called "infoing it back". That is where you have to guess the zipcode, birthday and the answer to a secret question. This has been going on for years. I got tired of collecting ids a few years ago but there is no doubt that collecting goes on today.

The really interesting question will be finding out how he got her specific ID to begin with. There is no doubt he was targeting her account while regular ID collecting is more random. That could be where the real scandal unfolds.

What if she was mean enough to put a bait email account out there to catch a rat trying to hack it?

Cheez, her real private email is probably something like Sarah139247@hotmail.com

Who can guess a password?

You start with the spouse's name. Then the kids' names. Then start going through various combinations of the kid's initials. Then start trying nicknames.

If the person wasn't taking password security seriously, it's possible to guess.

The other option is knowing enough about the person to trick the Yahoo! password utility to provide you a new one.

Definitely agree.

Probably we agree because we are moms. I just don't like to hear an unforgiving mob approach toward people who make mistakes, especially young people. This does need to be fully investigated. That said, I have a feeling Sarah will be firm but fair in her reaction to this news. I think that is the best move she can make personally, politically and spiritually.

Yep. IMO, a 20 yr old isn’t just a kid, he’s an adult who made a stupid mistake and should pay for it in some way.

It’s damn near impossible to do all those combinations and get it right.
He most likely got through on the Yahoo question she had set up for if/when she ever forgot her password. The questions are pretty basic like, “What is your father’s middle name.” Then Yahoo lets you reset your password.

I just called the obama HQ in Nashville and asked who the TN campaign manager was..

..wait for it..

Dude on the phone DID NOT KNOW!

He had to ask someone in the office.

Then he said it was "Jerry Martin".

Did not mention Kernell.

Do you see the irony here?

Governor Palin's 19 yr old son is in Iraq fighting for his country...

..This punk 20 yr old thief is trying to steal her private information.

Any questions?...

Arrest him...

..charge him...

..convict him...

..throw away the key!
