Memo to US Secret Service: Net proxy may pinpoint Palin email hackers
The Register ^ | Sept 18, 2008 | By Dan Goodin

Memo to law enforcement investigators tracking down who broke into Sarah Palin's Yahoo email account: Gabriel Ramuglia might be a good place to start.

The 25-year-old webmaster and entrepreneur is the operator of Ctunnel.com, the browsing proxy service used by the group that hacked into the vice presidential candidate's personal email account and exposed its contents to the world. While he has yet to examine his logs, he says there's a good chance they will lead to those responsible, thanks to some carelessness on their part.

"Usually, this sort of thing would be hard to track down because it's Yahoo email, and a lot of people use my service for that," he told El Reg in a phone interview. "Since they were dumb enough to post a full screenshot that showed most of the [Ctunnel.com] URL, I should be able to find that in my log."

How about the DOJ investigating Barack Obama's negotiating with the government of Iraq, in order to subvert our government's negotiations with them to reduce out troops in Iraq?

How about investigating that?

Whoever did this should be thrown in jail, and the key innocently thrown in the garbage.

"Does he really think this is not going to be pursued? "

I'll bet that the Obama illegal meddling in the diplomatic process in Iraq is very likely to go unpursued, as well as his alledged false birth certificate, and I could go on for a while about events that are left unpursued by this current administration. BOR is very likely completely right that this will be unpursued.

Concur.

Reading logs on a system with any significant traffic is like drinking from a fire hose.

I have clusters of systems that put out half a gig of PERFORMANCE data per day.

To expect anyone to know the details of such a flood of data is simply ludicrous.

PS- did you see my post with the aside about the Yahoo server farm in it? You’d probably enjoy the gory details.

Dialup?

Jeez. I forget that people still do that.

My soon-to-be-ex-wife and I once had a cockatiel that did a spot-on imitation of a 9600 baud modem handshake.

Weirdest thing I’ve ever heard a bird mimic.

So you do not think it is significant that the FBI and the Secret Service are already investigating this?

I have a feeling someone’s going to get a visit from Agent Frownyface and his good friend Sidearm.

The Bush administration has ignored so much that should have been prosecuted, that I have come to expect very little from it in terms of executing the laws of the USA. Whether or not I believe that a FBI/ Secret Service investigation is significant is really irrelevant; what matters is whether anyone gets prosecuted. I really hope that that happens, but I am not expecting much.

Very interesting stuff. Rubico is the name of a contributor to Wikipedia. He is a member of two Wikiproject groups: Chess and Rational skepticism. He’s edited pages on Tibet, Chess, Jack Thompson (a passage referring to JT as a “fag”), Caroline Crocker, Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed, and Scientology (interesting considering this was originally linked to Anonymous/4Chan).

In the Chess WikiProject he described himself as, “Rated 2000 USCF a lifelong chess player, i am interested in strategy and the fundamentals of the game.”

The guy sounds harmless enough but some of his interests suggest that he has some political opinions and his contributions to Wikipedia suggest that he has some technical acumen with a computer.

Here is a link to a list of his contributions:

http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:Contributions&limit=500&target=Rubico

He also may have a YouTube account......

Even without proxies, or reverse proxies, finding people is a fairly straightforward process. Some here might not agree with me disclosing this in public, but FR posters need to be aware of this as well as our opposition. Finding people via “tracks” left on the net is relatively easy. All it takes is time and money. :-)

I would be there is no huge effort to get to the bottom of this, I just don’t think it will happen, we have posted more information about the perp on this thread than the enforcement agencies will know in a week from now. I hope I’m wrong but the fact that the guy with the possible goods hasn’t be contacted probably means it’s not going to be really investigated that deeply.

I don’t know that the clock is running that fast. I came here to post this story, which is posted twice btw, because I figured “the right people” would find it. The owner of the proxy server could certainly zip and copy the logs off. Since he seems interested in pursuing this I would be surprised if he didn’t.

I have high hopes to see the photo posted soon at the end of this thread of some smarmy little bastard holding a placard of numbers and letters under the scraggly whiskers of his pimply chin. I want this frog to march.

I don’t think anyone would want to be in those kid’s shoes right now. I don’t think I’d want to be a friend, relative or employer of any of them either. Over-reaction by the Secret Service is almost universally accepted in this country and I’m sure they are going to send a “DON’T EVER SCREW WITH OUR PEOPLE AGAIN” message.

I have my popcorn ready, I’m waiting for the Shock And Awe show.
