SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) _ Michelle Obama took a break recently from the campaign trail to get her hands messy breading shrimp as she helped prepare a deep-fried dinner with the Food Network's first lady of Southern cooking, Paula Deen.
The wife of Democrat Barack Obama got cozy with Deen in the kitchen during a recent taping of the Savannah celebrity cook's TV show "Paula's Party," scheduled to air on the cable network Sept. 20.
Michelle Obama and Deen swapped stories about their families' favorite meals as they cooked fried shrimp and french fries at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Va., where the network converted a cafeteria into a TV kitchen.
"She was getting her hands dirty," Deen said in an interview Friday. "I think they are like us they like real food, not a bunch of prissy food."
Obama told Deen her husband's personal favorite is a steaming bowl of chili, and the first meal she ever cooked for him was a seafood gumbo. Deen, one of the Food Network's biggest stars, traveled to Norfolk for the taping three weeks ago.

Isn’t fried food racist? Or is it just fried chicken?
Paula’s going to help her see if Barak’s goose is cooked.
Fried chicken is only racist if you serve it with watermelon.
Honestly I heard somone say that you couldn’t serve watermelon at a BBQ fundraising event because the addition of watermelon would be perceived as racist.
Yes. I agree.
That was the first thing that came to my mind. It was so obvious.
She doesn't feel proud of her country on any day. The Obama camp has relegated her to cooking shows and “fluff” to keep the voters from asking her questions she won't answer and to keep her from blowing it for them. I hope through the internet we can remind America of her NOT showing up for the 9/11 event, because of her kids, and now able to leave her kids to travel to Savannah, to Indiana.....It needs to be constantly reminded that she is anti-America!!!
“Anyone who cooks like Paula Dean is asking for high cholesterol and high blood pressure.”
So true, sigh. Paula Deen’s ‘Ooey Gooey Pumpkin Butter Cake’ is a Thanksgiving staple in my house. But I only make it once a year..... when the name says butter, it means BUTTER. Delicious.
I stopped being able to tolerate Paula after the show with Jimmy Carter. Listening to Paula rave on about what a great guy he was REALLY spoiled my ‘appetite’ for her. Quite nauseating, actually.
cheers, pattyjo
I don't believe her story. On the remote chance that she's telling the truth, I'd bet that her seafood gumbo sucks. The dish is supposed to have shellfish like crabs, shrimp, and oysters. I don't think there's much of that in the middle of the country. Maybe she used Rocky Mountain oysters...
I miss Justin Wilson. I grew up watching him, Martin Yan, and a few others while all my friends where watching Sesame Street.
It doesn’t really matter how many Food TV spots Michelle appears in... she can’t compete with a woman who kills, cleans and cooks her own food.
Ooey Gooey Pumpkin Butter Cake
Recipe please, then I can say I got it from a FReeper not Paula. ;)
Oh....thanks...NOT.
I’ll bet Michelle has never even heard of Filet Powder and thinks a Roux is something you buy in a jar.
LOL, you bet. It IS to die for yummy. And now you can say you got it from good old FReeper pj_627 aka pattyjo:
Ooey Gooey Pumpkin Butter Cake:
1 (18 1/4-ounce) package yellow cake mix
1 egg
8 tablespoons butter, melted
Gooey Pumpkin Butter Filling:
1 (8-ounce) package cream cheese, softened
1 (15-ounce) can pumpkin
3 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla
8 tablespoons butter, melted
1 (16-ounce) box powdered sugar
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 teaspoon nutmeg
Directions
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
Combine the cake mix, egg, and butter and mix well with an electric mixer. Pat the mixture into the bottom of a lightly greased 13 by 9-inch baking pan.
To make the filling: In a large bowl, beat the cream cheese and pumpkin until smooth. Add the eggs, vanilla, and butter, and beat together. Next, add the powdered sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and mix well. Spread pumpkin mixture over cake batter and bake for 40 to 50 minutes. Make sure not to overbake as the center should be a little gooey.
Serve with fresh whipped cream.
cheers, and remember, just ONCE a year. ;>)

Have you ever made her Not Your Mama’s Banana Pudding? It’s wonderful!
To be honest, I’ve never had much luck with her meal recipes, but her desert recipes never get anything but raves.
You beat me, lol. Had to dig through my files and get more coffee. Slowed up my reaction time. :)

Oh my goodness! 2 sticks of butter and 4 eggs with a whole box of powdered sugar, cholesterol and sugar too die for. Literally. Yep, once a year!
Thanks for the recipe, I’ll try it at Thanksgiving and you get the credit. ;)
Sorry but that comment of asking the McCains and Palin is CYA Bravo Sierra!
