Barack-Seat Drivers: Barack Obama does not need your two cents
Slate ^ | Christopher Beam

Posted on 09/16/2008 8:27:40 PM PDT by presidio9

If there's one piece of advice Barack Obama should heed, it's this: Don't listen to advice. As John McCain overtakes Obama in the polls, pundits and bloggers have turned into political versions of "Dear Abby." They advise him about his message (Mark Halperin says: Talk about the economy!), his style (Arianna Huffington wants to see more MLK references), and his themes (Ellen Malcolm of Emily's List says, "Talk about who really is able to change the direction of this country"). So many people have added their two cents, no wonder Obama's breaking fundraising records.

It would be logically impossible for Obama to follow all this advice. It would also be unwise. To understand the first point, let's review some of the advice he's received in the last few weeks:

Link McCain to Bush! Everyone says this, as if Obama doesn't do it every day. It's the Democrats' grand strategy. Unclear if it's working.

Don't Just Link McCain to Bush! "The problem is not that Obama hasn't hit McCain hard enough or linked him to Bush often enough," offers columnist Michael Goodwin. "The problem is that he hasn't done anything else." The problem with this advice, unfortunately, is that McCain is Obama's opponent.

Get Mad! The consensus on the left is that Obama is a wimp. People want passion. And that doesn't just mean saying you're "mad" and that wage disparity makes your "blood boil." It's like they say in film class: Show, don't tell. It's time to get furious—maybe even nasty— about McCain's lies and distortions and carbon sequestration agenda. "They know that's how the game is played,"

The Rest:

Don't Get Mad! Take the High Road Lie Like McCain Go After Palin! Ignore Palin Use the Clintons! Ignore the Clintons Go Back in Time and Pick Hillary Clinton

“””So many people have added their two cents, no wonder Obama’s breaking fundraising records.”””

Since the MSM wont look, I want to know if anyone is keeping track of all the “contributions” to the NObama campaign?? Or is this something that wont be “covered” until after the election???

Its a sign of a floundering campaign that has no theme and no clear message. Obama is just reacting to each day's events, not driving anything home to the voters. Since he ditched hope and change, voters understand he's running against Bush. But what else is on offer?

Slate has no idea.... If their guy had a backbone they wouldn't worry about where his advice originates.

Love him or hate him; John is his own man.

Yeah, not enough people know that Obama is black, too (just like MLK!)

You're absolutely correct. I've noticed that pattern this week. Whatever big story breaks, blame Bush and tie him to McCain.
That works for a short period of time, but Rush is right about one thing; in the end people want a vote FOR someone. You need to give them a reason to vote for you, and not just because you aren't the other guy.
Sure some voters will fall for it, but it's not a way to get people to the polls.

“Barack Obama dose not need your two cents.”

So now we know how much will have left after his tax increases.

And vice versa, believe me.

It's like they say in film class: Show, don't tell.

That's certainly been the trend in the last half-century or so, but sometimes "tell" is better. If, for example, the character of the villain isn't going to develop through the film, which is a better use of a viewer's time: a few minutes of scenes showing how evil (or inept, or whatever characteristics are needed) the villain is, or a title card: "Blackyard Pete: More crooked than the Mississippi River, and thicker too."

Obama is very indecisive so the more contradictory advice, the better for us

Talk about the police killer from Philadelphia. Mumia al whatever.

Talk about the black Arabs who stole the black africans to sell to the white slave buyers.

Talk about the black Robert Mugabe.

Talk about all the successful economic programs in black countries.

Talk about the life span in black countries.

Talk about the great black statesmen like the former leader of the UN, can you say fraud? Talk about Charlie Rangel, Alcee Hastings, Jefferson LA, Nagin, etc.

Barry peaked on February 19th. Check the election results.

Barry is now mostly a mortal politician just like the rest of them. But now he has negatives in the high 40s and he is no longer new and exciting. And he has 19 months worth of public statements to use against him which Hillary didn’t have at her disposal 8 months ago.

All the advise in the world isn’t going to turn him into a person of substance in 60 days. Even a teleprompter can’t do that.
