Once convinced of our own inate rightness and reason anything is possible.

He pointed out that madmen have their world all worked out in perfectly logical terms. Their madness makes perfect sense - to them. Sometimes we see madness that is more general because it flatters masses of people and convinces them they are the fount of right and truth and sufficient unto themselves. They need answer to no one and nothing but themselves. When enough are infected like this we experience mass movements that invariably lead to disaster for themselves and often for all who live among them.
