~The FReeper Canteen Presents~ Marine Barracks Washington Marine Barracks Washington, also known as "8th & I," is the oldest active post in the Marine Corps. Located on the corners of 8th & I streets in southeast Washington, D.C., the Barracks supports both ceremonial and security missions in the nation's capital. The selection of the location of Marine Barracks Washington was of national and strategic interest. President Thomas Jefferson accompanied by the second commandant of the Marine Corps, Lieutenant Colonel William Ward Burrows, searched for a suitable location to station the Marines within proximity to the Washington Navy Yard and within "an easy marching distance of the Capitol." The Body Bearer Section is a unit within Bravo Company, one of the ceremonial drill companies at Marine Barracks, Washington, D.C. The section is comprised of 15 Marine infantrymen whose primary mission is to conduct funerals for Marines, former Marines and Marine family members at Arlington National Cemetery and the surrounding cemeteries in the Washington, D.C., area. The road to becoming a body bearer is not an easy one and has great physical requirements. A typical day for a body bearer includes ceremonial burial practice and hours of weight training and conditioning. The remainder of the day is spent attending infantry proficiency training classes. The United States Marine Drum and Bugle Corps performs martial and popular music for hundreds of thousands of spectators each year. The Corps of more than 80 Marine musicians, dressed in ceremonial red and white uniforms, is known world-wide as a premier musical marching unit. Throughout the summer months the unit performs in the traditional Friday Evening Parades held at the Marine Barracks, Washington, D.C., and in Sunset Parades at the U.S. Marine Corps War Memorial (Iwo Jima Monument) near Arlington, Virginia, every Tuesday evening. These "Parades" are not street parades but are dramatic military ceremonies which are a symbol of the professionalism and discipline of the United States Marines. The Drum and Bugle Corps travels more than 50,000 miles annually, performing in excess of 400 events across the nation and abroad. Learn More About Marine Barracks Washington HERE!

Reporting in Drive-By Mode from the Bluegrass, Sarge has a HURRICANE IKE update!
Louisville KY got hit hard - 250K out of power, 1 dead and 14 injured, estimates of outages up to a week.
My National Guard unit got called up - I am sending this from a motel room where the stand-by team is holed up. We have Civil Support missions all over the state. The State Womens’ Prison lost all power, and the Guard has to provide backup generators for power for the facility. That’s the mission I’m on for tomorrow.
We’re on duty for at least four days, but I have my laptop to check in when I can.
On the personal front: Sarge was at Drill Weekend, headed home in the storm, when Clifford The Big Red Truck dropped his transmission on the interstate. My AAA-Plus membership paid for itself, when the wrecker appeared and dragged the carcass home through wind and fallen trees.
Once home, Sarge walked the neighborhood, checking on folks up and down the street. Two houses were demolished when old-growth trees fell on top of them. Streets were blocked, and traffic was snarled by blocked roads and dead stoplights. Only a few gas stations are open; there have been no gas deliveries.
The Home Detachment never lost power of Internet, but every house in the neighborhood was affected. Missus and The Boy were at a birthday party at Chucky Cheese’s, when the management closed the place and evacuated. They hunkered down in a bookstore nearby until the storm passed (break Missus’s heart, to be trapped in a bookstore!)...
That’s all for now, everyone. Getting up at 0500 for the next mission...

I’m so sorry that y’all had to go through all of that with
Ike. But I guess if you’re going to get stuck somewhere, a
bookstore is not bad! :D
Are you and your NG team taking care of Ike issues?
