For Obama, Race Remains Elephant in the Room
Time ^ | 9/15/2008 | Michael Grunwald

Posted on 09/15/2008 4:37:52 PM PDT by markomalley

On a swing through Pennsylvania last month, John McCain visited a Manheim Central High School football practice — not to ingratiate himself with the players, who weren't even old enough to vote, but to identify himself with the gritty, down-home lunch bucket values of small-town football. "This is a blue-collar town," Manheim's coach said in his introduction of McCain. "We don't have a lot of flashy athletes. We don't come out with a lot of flash." But the coach explained that his team works hard, plays with discipline, and comes through in the end. "A lot like John McCain," he said.

If you're familiar with the code words of the sports world, you've probably already guessed that Manheim's players had something else in common with McCain: They were white. On the other hand, athletes who get described as "flashy" almost invariably have something in common with Barack Obama. I'm not saying the coach was trying to inject race into his discussion of flashiness. I'm saying that sometimes we talk about race even when we're not talking about race — in presidential politics as well as sports. Sports announcers have at least made an effort to shed their stereotypes; they occasionally describe black players as "scrappy" or "blue-collar," adjectives that used to be reserved for whites. But for political pundits, "working-class" or "blue-collar" or even "small-town" voters still means white; blacks have their own category.

Exactly. Frankly, I don’t give a damn about his skin color. If he were conservative, more conservative than McCain, he’d get my vote.

He isn’t. So he gets nothing but opposition from me. And it ain’t ‘cause he is black.

It’s time for the media to own up to Barry’s whiteness. Or have they forgotten?

Oh good grief. What about basketball teams that are entirely black? Are there any terms that should be avoided when describing them? This stuff is getting so ridiculous, it’s got to die of it’s own weight of absurdity soon.

The irony here is that Republicans are voting against Obama because he is a complete leftist and nearly 100 percent of us would vote for Clarence Thomas if he ran for President because, contrary to Dem talking points, Republicans are NOT the racist party and we vote based on issues. The Dems, meanwhile, (the so-called party of tolerance) are the ones who are vacillating about voting for a black. I have both co-workers and family members who are life-time union-card Dems and they are coming right out and admitting they won’t vote for a Black. I don’t even pretend to know the statistics as to how many of his own party is made up of racists but it will be members of his own party who refuse to vote for him and this could be the “elephant in the room” when it comes to his candidacy.

They were making a lot of noise on CNN about this over the weekend. When you tell me that 90% of black people in this country are not voting for Obama because he’s black, maybe we can talk about it. There are people who vote Republican who won’t be voting to Sarah Palin this time around. So what? There is no law against sexists or racists voting.

“Sports announcers have at least made an effort to shed their stereotypes”

Where is this clown’s mind? It’s totally the opposite and it’s noticeably pronounced with black commentators, especially the “color” ones (pun not intended).

And whenever have you heard them compare a player of one color to another player of a different color? It doesn’t happen, just like black athletes always mention black athletes as their “role models” or “heroes”

If there’s one home for stereotypes, it’s sports.

Talking to some men that built the Alaskan Governor’s rail car.

These Blue collar workers do NOT like Obama. I don’t think it has anything to do with race. It has to do with his arrogant elitist attitude. They don’t like anyone who acts like he is better than them.

One man said - hey he had a chance being half black and half white to really make a difference and bring both races together. He chose to portray himself as an African American man not just an American. We don’t need anyone who is racist as President and that includes black racists.

Another man said- He has used Chicago politics to get elected. In my opinion there isn’t a politician in Chicago that should become President. The only way to get elected and stay elected is to be just as dirty as the people that grease their palms.

Another said- he hasn’t been honest about his muslim roots. He keeps changing the story. First he had never been Muslim and then he was not raised Muslim. Since Radical muslims are allowed to do anything and lie about anything to further their religion how do we know he is telling the truth.

And the last one said - how come he is so secretive about his past. Why won’t he allow the American people see his grades and his thesis and his birth certificate. What is he hiding?

MSM seems to be pushing ‘race’ with a renewed fervor over the last couple of days.
I’m guessing it’s part of Barry’s new plan.

Now even FOX is pushing the "White Guilt" angle.

Ive already heard and read too many diatribes against racist whites who won't vote for Obama because of his skin color.
And I'm way past the barf limit on stories asserting that we need to elect a black to show the world we're not as backwards and Neanderthal-like as they think we are.

And, of course, the constant barrage of stories lecturing us that we need to elect Obama to heal America.

ENOUGH!

I think this is meant to prop us Obama’s poll numbers. The more the media pushes the race angle, the more people are reluctant to answer they won’t vote for the black candidate on the phone.

Race? Who the hell is talking about race? It's only the media and the Democrats!

I only care that he's incompetent and unimaginably inexperienced.

Democrat political pundits. Just to be clear about it.

one out of every four Hillary Clinton voters actually admitted to pollsters that race was a factor in their vote

Democrats again.

the Thomas Friedmans and Arianna Huffingtons of the world are imploring Obama to get angry, to shed his above-the-fray cool

We've just gone through a couple weeks of vicious attacks against Palin, so vicious as to be almost funny. If he gets angry, are the attacks going to get worse? That hardly seems possible. Remember the reporter that got arrested for trying to report on Obama's big money backers? Remember the memo where he sic's his minions on Stanley Kurtz? the two (thats two) letters to Justice requesting prosecution for running ads against Obama?

If thats cool and above the fray, what is he like when he gets angry?

Even if racism were as rampant as Obama wishes it were, he’s still an idiot. Let’s assume he’s right and that the PUMA folks are right also, that Hillary got kicked out due to sexism. So that would make it the Racist ticket against the Sexist ticket. Let’s see, that’s someone who dislikes 10% of the population versus someone who dislikes 50% of the population. Conclusion: Obama’s an idiot.
