Immigration reform was once Sen. John McCain's signature issue and a key ingredient in his maverick image. Democrats have largely avoided the subject, but there are signs they'll be using the issue this fall to challenge the Republican presidential nominee's maverick claim.
"Everybody's so scared to touch the subject, because in certain areas it's detrimental to somebody's political future," said Rep. Charlie Gonzalez, D-San Antonio. "It's an issue that legitimately should be addressed."
Hispanics are the fastest-growing segment of the electorate, and analysts predict turnout as high as 9 million, up from the 2004 record of 7.6 million. Their clout will be most felt in battlegrounds like Nevada, New Mexico, Colorado and Florida.
Last week, Democratic pollster Sergio Bendixen released data showing that in all those states but Florida, Sen. Barack Obama holds a strong lead among Hispanic voters, and immigration is a key reason.
Mr. Bendixen predicted that "when the debates start, there will be a lot of discussion." The first debate is less than two weeks away, on Sept. 26 at the University of Mississippi.
Much of the public supports comprehensive reform beefed-up border security, combined with a new guest worker program and some form of legal status for most of the 12 million illegal immigrants already in this country. But opponents feel very strongly, and Mr. Obama would prefer not to stir them up.
Mr. McCain was once the Senate's top champion of comprehensive reform, despite fierce resistance within his own party. But the push for a deal fell apart last year, and to survive the GOP primaries, he adopted the hard-liners' view that border security and enforcement must come first. He even declared that he would now vote against his own bill.

I don’t know, but I bet she knows a few palindromes. :)
As mentioned earlier by another Freeper, the MSM seeks to divide us so that they can get Obama into office.
They are banking that the immigration issue will keep us at home during the General, but I am going to vote for McCain because I shudder to think of Obama controlling our taxpayer dollars, defense department and nuclear arsenal.
Not to worry. McCain still strongly supports anmensty. On his official website in the section "Adress the Undocumented" he goes into the sticky details, which are just a replay of McCain-Kennedy. He has not backed down from amnesty.

English Script For “Which Side Are They On?” (TV:30)
ANNCR: Obama and his Congressional allies say they are on the side of immigrants. But are they?
The press reports that their efforts were ‘poison pills’ that made immigration reform fail.
The result:
No guest worker program.
No path to citizenship.
No secure borders.
No reform.
Is that being on our side?
Obama and his Congressional allies ready to block immigration reform, but not ready to lead.
JOHN MCCAIN: I’m John McCain and I approve this message.
ANNCR: Paid for by McCain-Palin 2008 and the Republican National Committee. Approved by McCain-Palin 2008.
Spanish Script For “De que lado estan?” (TV:30)
JOHN MCCAIN: I’m John McCain and I approve this message.
Isn't that a coincidence. Those in Florida were mostly Cubans fleeing Communism. Those elsewhere are mostly Mexicans hoping to bring it with them.
Obama understands this, but McCain can't seem to figure it out.

Yep, I heard McC promising “comprehensive immigration reform” in a campaign speech today.
I wrote a letter to my county GOP chair that I wanted to donate money, but I wanted some acknowledgment from McC that he knew we strongly opposed amnesty. That was about a week ago, no reply.
I will not vote for McCain...I cannot support a candidate who values the rights of illegal aliens over the rights of American citizens.
I can assure you a lot of conservatives will regret voting for McCain
When you run ads on a Spanish program sponsored by the Hispanic Ku Klux Klan (La Raza...The Race)...you are not pushing secure borders and American citizens rights.
I will make sure my conservative congressman gets re-elected...but no way will I vote McCain. It would be a wasted vote
LLS
Withholding your vote for McCain is a vote for Obama.
No worries....But just know that by not voting for McPain....you are basically supporting a Marxist/Socialist for POTUS.
Sleep soundly..........
What I am also concerned about is a bunch of illegal aliens coming into our country, and then being given amnesty. These same people will then support the democrats and taxing the rich and other socialist policies, and we will never be able to win in 2012 or beyond.
“I will not vote for McCain”
If you and others do that, that will be exactly what will cause Obama to win the election.
America can’t afford an Obama presidency!!! He will bring socialism to America, appoint hyper-liberal justices to the Supreme Court, and do unspeakable damage to our country.
It is imperative that all Republicans unite behind McCain & Palin! The future of America is at stake!
What would osama do? You know and it would be far worse than McCain... and I agree with you on immigration.
LLS
What to you mean..."coming". They are HERE!!!
I personally have witnessed here in NE. Oklahoma...in the last 6-8 years, the same thing that I witnessed in SOCAL back in the 80's. Illegal aliens taking jobs...that AMERICANS were DOING!!
Believe me they are ALREADY here. But you are correct... more will come like a tidal wave...if amnesty is proposed.

There is no such thing as a wasted vote. Write in someone.
The lesser of two evils is still evil.
