The Washington Post article is already being commented upon here in Free Republic.

The purpose of this thread is to help Freepers and lurkers decide upon what the best mode of self defense would be in the case of the breakdown in social order such as happened with the Rodney King riots.
Joe Brower owns one of the RKBA (Right to Keep and Bear Arms) ping lists. I tried to convince him to open this vanity because he and his friends are more knowledgeable about guns. He says, "there have already been threads on the subject you mention right here on FR, although I can't locate them now. Tell you what -- you start the thread and then ping me, and I'll then flag my RKBA list for comments. I'm sure some folks in that group would be able to provide links, as well as plenty of timely advice. "
This scenario is called the SHTF scenario, where the acronym stands for $#|+ Hits The Fan. So this will be the SHTF gun thread for November 2008... Of course, gun ownership isn't for everyone. But it is the most accessible safety measure under our constitution, which is as our founding fathers intended. Recall where the police were when the Rodney King riots started: they left the scene for their own safety. If that were to happen in your neighborhood, what is your plan?
Are those allowed in California? It sounds like banned assault rifle.
Thanks for your kind remarks. Unless I am mistaken, I can use a lighter load in a .357 revolver (5-6” barrel) for practice, and since it’s heavier than the .38, I’ll get less kick. So I still haven’t ruled out the .357.
As far as the defense load in the .38, I won’t be using that on a weekly practice basis, so even though there is a fair amount of kick, it will have more stopping power. And in an emergency, adrenaline and practice will be my helpers. I will be practicing with both loads, but much less with the Golden Sabers than the regular load, just enough to be familiar with the difference.
Anyway, I got pink grips for it. :D
No, they I don't think they are allowed in the Peoples' Republic of Kalifornication. They are not banned by the federal government or by most states - the red states, the fly-over-country.
Ditto that. That was the age my father first gave both me and my brother our introduction to firearms use/safety. Same for pretty much every kid in our rural area. In the entire time I lived there (Age 0-18), there were NO, I repeat ZERO, incidents of "kids with guns" of any sort whatsoever.
No. The judge tries to do two things and it doesn’t do a good job of it. Keep the little .25 around just for the heck of it and practice as much as possible with the 9MM. Check the ‘net for good defensive rounds for the 9MM and you’re good to go.
If you have to use the .25 auto in a defensive situation, just keep shooting until you empty the magazine at the bad guy.
Better late than never. BTW, Did you bring any adult beverages? LOL!
Hiya, Sandy!
Imagine meeting you here!
After Rob died, I didn’t care much about home defense very much for about a while, especially because I have the mastiff (click on my screen name). Then, I noticed, over several months, men who were walking along the highway that goes by my rural road, heading away from town. No bags, just walking, going who knows where. When it finally registered that there were unknown people passing through, I decided it was foolish to assume they were all mild-mannered gentlemen whose vehicles had broken down X miles back. Now that I think about it, it’s really bizarre. So! I have my revolver, and I sleep well. :D
Let’s try that sentence again:
“After Rob died, I didn’t care much about home defense for a while...” etc.
Sheesh!
Heck yeah.
Watching those hogs drop in their tracks is a memory seared in my mind. No, a .22 is not the ultimate stopper but it is easy to shoot, extremely accurate, quieter than most, and with an auto loader, you can put several shots into a human monster in a split second. In addition, they will not penetrate several walls and kill your neighbor.
I would rather have a Ruger 10/22 with a reliable 30 round mag than just about anything else except a 12 gauge shotgun, for self defense.
Now if we were talking about shooting Tigers or Elephants then that is a different situation.

..and The Firing Line
Check out International Defensive Pistol Association competitions. The members love talking to new people. They also understand you may not want to join but they will give you all the help they can. Pick out a few of their top shooters and copy what they are doing. You won’t be sorry.
Great question! The premise is certainly stretching things a little, though, in that I seriously doubt a lost election is going to result in much but bruised feelings. But you're right to want to be prepared at all times, especially with a wife and family.
The first thing I'd do is harden your home. Metal frames on the exterior doors, metal doors or solid, heavy wood with small or no windows, and a deadbolt lock on each. Shutters on the windows if it's appropriate. Designate an interior, windowless room as a safe room, put a sturdy door and a deadbolt on it and keep a firearm and a charged cellphone inside. Train the wife and kids to retreat and button up at the sign of trouble and holler for help.
As to the firearm(s) themselves, I also like a Mossberg 500 but any decent shotgun that you've practiced with is adequate. At interior ranges the difference between birdshot and 00 buck isn't really very great. Learn to hit with what you have.
Identify lines of egress if possible should you need to take the very grave step of leaving the house. Speak to your neighbors about mutual self-defense - community defense is far more effective a deterrent to rioters than a single guy with a shotgun on his doorstep. Speak to the local police about what procedure they use and what their own plans are - you might be surprised. Store food, water, ammo, medicine if applicable, and the usual emergency supplies sufficient to last you until it becomes clear what your next step will have to be.
This is all pretty common-sense stuff and I apologize for stating the obvious to folks who probably already know it. If I remember your neighborhood rightly I don't think you're going to have a problem, but the best general advice is to help your neighbors and depend on yourself.
Bumping your post!
Kevmo, great thread...thanks!
The bench mark standard for what you want is a Ruger 10-22 rifle. The only complaints is the cheap aftermarket magazines the keep cropping up. Tactical Inonovations sells the best aftermarket 25 round magazines you can buy.
You’re much better off buying the .22LR than a shotgun, you’ll use only a couple of times before the election. After the election we can sort you out with buying more to keep your family safe.
By the way, you might consider buying his and her’s rifles. Also, keep shooting until the threat is over. It’s not hollywood. Thanks.
