Preparing for the "Big What if": Buying a gun
WaPo & Free Republic ^ | Sept 15, 2008 | Joe Brower

Posted on 09/15/2008 10:58:51 AM PDT by Kevmo

The Washington Post article is already being commented upon here in Free Republic.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/09/12/AR2008091202414

The purpose of this thread is to help Freepers and lurkers decide upon what the best mode of self defense would be in the case of the breakdown in social order such as happened with the Rodney King riots.

Joe Brower owns one of the RKBA (Right to Keep and Bear Arms) ping lists. I tried to convince him to open this vanity because he and his friends are more knowledgeable about guns. He says, "there have already been threads on the subject you mention right here on FR, although I can't locate them now. Tell you what -- you start the thread and then ping me, and I'll then flag my RKBA list for comments. I'm sure some folks in that group would be able to provide links, as well as plenty of timely advice. "

This scenario is called the SHTF scenario, where the acronym stands for $#|+ Hits The Fan. So this will be the SHTF gun thread for November 2008... Of course, gun ownership isn't for everyone. But it is the most accessible safety measure under our constitution, which is as our founding fathers intended. Recall where the police were when the Rodney King riots started: they left the scene for their own safety. If that were to happen in your neighborhood, what is your plan?

The best short range weapon is a pump or semi-auto 12 gauge with a short barrel and extended mag. Operationally the Mossbergs Remington 870, 1100, 1187, or Winchester 1200, 1300 models plus the Berettas, Brownings, Benelli, etc. are all reliable.

For pure durability you cannot beat the Remington 870. I taught skeet at a major Southern University. The school furnished Remington 870’s for those who didn’t own their own gun. Some of those 870’s must have had several hundred thousand rounds through them and were still functioning perfectly.

Your idea of the .22 auto is perfectly good. A .22 LR out of a rifle barrel is deadly. I would recommend the Ruger 10/22 simply because there are so many high capacity mags for it. I would buy several of the better quality and check them out thoroughly to make sure they are reliable. If any mag fails at all, destroy it or return it if you can and replace it.

If you can afford it, any of the high capacity autos in a caliber of at least 9mm would be nice, along with several extra mags.

Always keep the extra mags close to the guns.

I personally would choose a Sig P226 but the Glocks, Springfields, Smith & Wessons etc. are all good. Probably the easiest gun (of major power) to hit with if you are not experienced is the Browning Hi-Power.

You could do a lot worse than an AR-15 and a bunch of spare mags.

No matter what you get, buy a lot of ammo and become familiar with shooting the gun.

One thousand rounds of ammo could cost as much, or a few times more than, the firearm. So consider the cost of the whole package because saving $200 on the firearm could be eaten up in paying an exta 20 cents per round for 1000 rounds. In your original post you said you would like it for plinking later. That and practice can spend a lot of ammo.

The cheapest ammo on the market, except for 22 LR ammo, is 7.62x39 (AK-47 ammo), and 5.56 x 45 (.223 Remington) and both can be had now for 23 to 25 cents per round. You won't likely be plinking or practicing much with shotgun ammo, especially at 75 cents per round.

If available in California, seriously consider a new model Ruger Mini-14 Ranch rifle (which is scoped). Yes, it would be $200 to $300 more than a bottom of the line WalMart rifle, but the savings in ammo will make the package (rifle plus 1000 rounds) about the same. There is .223 ammo available which will not overpenetrate walls. The 25 cent per round ammo would also allow relatively cheap plinking and practice, though not as cheap as 22 LR ammo.

"Sorry you think everyone else must live in a slum. Sounds like class warfare and not reality. Reality is that no one needs to live in a ghetto. No one. And, yeah, it is nice where I live. I chose wisely. So, go ahead, say something racist and tell me I am a “typical rich white guy”, and I’ll proudly say, yes, I am. Smart, educated, responsible, chose where to live wisely by getting an education and ensuring my family is able to live in a nice place and not a ghetto."

...too many variables now. This is not the 1960s. There's no class war perpetrated by labor (although rich importers might be questionable). Most rich folks are liberals. Most rich neighborhoods contain people of various colors. Crime is high in most rich neighborhoods--especially where meth is common, even in rural areas. Education today does not guarantee wealth. Stocks are falling due to fraudulent loans and foreclosures (1970s deja vu on a world scale). Employers are moving hordes of third-worlders in to replace Americans.

That said, I'm in favor of capitalism where there's enough concern for national security. But we need to reestablish older moral standards, and our leaders should again set better examples for all. We should not be required to pay false respect at work to bosses' family pathologies (anti-family pathologies supported by much corporate funding).

There's a need for self defense plans in any kind of neighborhood. Places like Orange County are also ridden with crime (including neo-Nazis and enemy sympathizers).

not 18 round, the tube would be almost 4 feet long.

The Russian Saiga-12 is an AK-style gas-operated 12-gauge shotgun with a detachable box magazine. (Unfortunately for California residents, Cali lists it as an "assault weapon"). You can get 5-round and 10-round box-type magazines, plus a 20-round drum mag

I doubt a shotgun would be the right weapon for such neophytes.

You'd be wrong. Get a 12 ga. shotgun, put a Knoxx stock on it and do a little fam firing. A shotgun is perfect for home defense. As for the little uns: if the can't keep their grubs off the gun after being told, leave it unloaded ie. no round in the chamber.

Rem 870 under $300.

I see you are a racist. If you knew anything at all about white people, much less rich people of any color, you’d know we pay for our own educations and work hard. It seems that concept escapes you as you rant that white people are given everything. Hard working rich blacks, yellowes, and purples, also pay their own way. The rich kids who get everything from their parents rarely have anything left after just a few years. If you weren’t so full of liberal tripe and running on emotion and not facts you’d know all that.

What you say is true but considering history the only riots are people burning down their own neighborhoods.

“real” riot - like in the 60’s.

Minor disturbance - a few idiots

“A .22 has NO stopping power. It will only piss them off and they will get you before you can load the next round.”

Ummm, a semi auto solves that problem. Got one that holds 15 rounds at a time. Even if I have to back up a step or two, somebody with 15 holes center mass may decide it’s not worth the effort. Course as back up we have an 8mm Mauser.

Not being one of Sharpeton’s “people” or Jewish, I can;t say.

A riot is by definition, a serious dusturbance caused by a multitude. A handfull of idiots doesn’t constitute a “riot”.

That was FORTY YEARS AGO!! I KNOW, I lost classes at school because of it.

Times have changed.

By the way, I’m, NOT black - I’m white.

Believe me, I still carry a .40 cal Sigma with a 14-round clip and a spare. I’m not saying it doesn’t kill ‘em, I’m just saying the movies where they fly backwards through a plate glass window just isn’t reality. And armed is virtually always better than unarmed.

“I’m somewhat concerned about our candidates well-being. I would not put anything past these socialists.”

A far greater possibility than a city full of black folks starting a riot because Obama looses the election.

Absolutely correct.

Take the NRA course with your family members before you buy anything.

Be prepared to spend more money for training and practice than for the initial weapon purchase.

Good advice, but this won’t be a Rodney King Event.

The media flooded television with scenes of several cops beating up on a black guy on the ground. I think the cops were all white.

Obama is not the same kind of situation. Besides, he is only 1/4 black. The rest is looney liberal white and slaver-background Arab.
