The Washington Post article is already being commented upon here in Free Republic.

The purpose of this thread is to help Freepers and lurkers decide upon what the best mode of self defense would be in the case of the breakdown in social order such as happened with the Rodney King riots.
Joe Brower owns one of the RKBA (Right to Keep and Bear Arms) ping lists. I tried to convince him to open this vanity because he and his friends are more knowledgeable about guns. He says, "there have already been threads on the subject you mention right here on FR, although I can't locate them now. Tell you what -- you start the thread and then ping me, and I'll then flag my RKBA list for comments. I'm sure some folks in that group would be able to provide links, as well as plenty of timely advice. "
This scenario is called the SHTF scenario, where the acronym stands for $#|+ Hits The Fan. So this will be the SHTF gun thread for November 2008... Of course, gun ownership isn't for everyone. But it is the most accessible safety measure under our constitution, which is as our founding fathers intended. Recall where the police were when the Rodney King riots started: they left the scene for their own safety. If that were to happen in your neighborhood, what is your plan?
I almost got the .357 revolver, funny you should mention that. The store owner said, “Of course, it will be a little bit large for carrying in a purse.” I replied that I would just get a bigger purse. I didn’t realize that the whole store was watching the little old lady purchasing a handgun, until everyone laughed.
I almost got both of them, also. I’m not sure if I’ll want to be doing range shooting, though, and for home defense, the snubbie is fine for close range. I got regular ammo for practice, and Remington Golden Saber .38 Special (+P) for defense use.
The .12 gauge is just too heavy and unwieldy in an emergency. I know it’s not a huge weapon, but I am little and arthritic. The revolver has fewer moving parts, less chance of something going wrong, it’s double action, nothing to fuss with, just pick up, aim and shoot. Simple to clean.
The dogs will alert me if anyone comes near the house, so it doesn’t matter if I’m sleeping, before they can get close, I’ll be ready.
Appreciate the link to another ammo site.
“I live in silicon valley, in a working class neighborhood, mostly hispanic and mostly homeowners rather than renters.”
You know, we’re up here north of SF, in a rural area where it is probably 60/40 white/Hispanic, and honestly, we don’t see many black people here, or even close to us. I have a hard time seeing the Hispanics here rioting over old Obama. And all the whine-and-cheesers up here will probably just write pissy letters to the Press-Democrat.
I think it is worth really thinking about whether anything is likely to happen in *your* neighborhood, or an area you work in or go through frequently. I am all for people owning guns responsibly, if they want to. Just saying that widespread rioting in the event of an Obama loss may not happen anywhere near *you*.
Won’t anything work as long as you’re proficient in its use? Take my wife, for example, she can shoot a man around a corner by calculated ricochet. The larger the caliber, the larger the hole, I guess, the greater the ventilation.
“I have 2 kids under 9 years old, so it would be important to have a safe trigger lock thingamajiggie.”
I found a better solution. I bought a small handgun safe from a local outdoor shop. It has a keyless entry using a 4 digit code. I set up a code that uses all the left keys so I can open it by simply remembering to go down the numbers top to bottom on the right of the keypad. I can get my handgun out in far less time than it takes to remove a trigger lock, and I can keep the gun loaded with the safety off. I keep one by the bed, and one easily accessible when I am downstairs. We have had a number of home invasions in our area so quick access is important.
Do a google on the Rossi .357 mag six shooter w/rubber grips. Very nice very tought weapon and you can get all kinds of .38 Special+P jacketed hollowpoint and .357mag hollowpoint ammo for it. Practice with simple .38 Special ball ammo.
With all due respect...that you could probably teach me plenty about guns and shooting. I have to sadly disagree.....
Every spring..and at times in the fall. I most surely "aim" my Mossberg Ulti-Mag 12 gauge shotgun at "long bearded gobblers."
“Must be nice where you live. In the meantime were dealing with real world issues on the ground. Not everyone can afford to live where you do.”
Sorry you think everyone else must live in a slum. Sounds like class warfare and not reality. Reality is that no one needs to live in a ghetto. No one. And, yeah, it is nice where I live. I chose wisely. So, go ahead, say something racist and tell me I am a “typical rich white guy”, and I’ll proudly say, yes, I am. Smart, educated, responsible, chose where to live wisely by getting an education and ensuring my family is able to live in a nice place and not a ghetto.
I like that idea. How much $ was it? Can it hold a shotgun or rifle?

Tell that to the squirrels...that I've shot. And the head shot humans I've seen in the E.R.
I can load the "next round" in less than a 1/2 second....give or take.
Not saying a .22 is the gun of choice...but your comments/advice aren't exactly correct.
The .38 Special was preferred by police all over the United States for many years. You can find them at any pawn shop for very little money. It'll give you real home protection, compared to the plinker .22.
I agree,, The 870 remington is the cheapest and most reliable weapons ever made,,,the shotgun is the most versatile home defense weapon that a person can have,,,
I like Rush’s version, ‘In a Yugo”. I think Paul Shanklin does it.
Bingo.
IMHO, the primary issues to consider are: (1) does the firearm function properly and safely, (2) is the person comfortable using it, and (3) has the person practiced, practiced, practiced with that specific firearm.
Just about any firearm purchased from a reputable dealer will pass (1). (2) and (3) are up to the person.
For example, lots of people poo-poo .22s, and frankly for good reason. However, a .22 that someone is comfortable firing is vastly superior - for them - than a .357 mag they’ve not practiced with and are not comfortable firing.
All that said, lots of good choice/selection advice above. My personal choices: .357 mag six shooter on the hip and 12 ga pump shotgun in hand for close quarters. If things really go bad, I’ll shift to my scoped AR-180B with multiple 30 round clips and Sig 9mm with extra clips. If things go further south and I’m still in the $#!+, I might bring out some real artillery. Some here will criticize the AR-180B and 9mm as not having enough stopping power (tend to punch holes). Their points have a lot of validity. However, those are the firearms with which I’ve put in the most time practicing rapid (for me) aimed fire, so that’s what I’d go with.
I also plan to be at a friend’s place on election night - someone I shoot with regularly and can trust. He’s armed for bear, too.

Cable lock with alarm from CheaperThanDirt for $9.97
Thread it through the action of your firearm(s) as shown, and also through a pair of eye-bolts screwed into studs in your closet. The alarm will discourage your kids from playing with your stuff.
My 2 cents: Remington 870 with a Surefire fore end and a Glock 21. Simply perfect. Directions: Use the Glock to get to your Remington.
It cost me 39 dollars, but it is only big enough to hold a single handgun. It can be bolted to the floor or wall. It would take a burglar with a crowbar only a few minutes to open it, but my reason for it is safety from small hands, not to keep it from getting stolen.
