Palin's 'Mr. Mom' a secret weapon? - Appeal seen to blue-collar vote

He's a member of the steelworkers union, a registered independent and has championed the need for vocational - not Ivy League - education in his home state.

He works the night shift in North Slope oil fields, fishes commercially in icy waters and flies around snowy Alaska in a floatplane, all the while winning four cross-state snowmobile championships.

At home, he happily navigates between hardworking man's man and hunky Mr. Mom to the five Palin children, comfortable in his role as rock-solid support spouse to wife Sarah's power career.

Now, with her historic nomination as Republican vice-presidential candidate, some are wondering if Todd Palin might be the Republican Party's key and yet untapped surrogate to reaching working-class voters, some put off by Democratic presidential nominee Sen. Barack Obama.

"If I had a crystal ball a few years ago, I might have asked a few more questions when Sarah decided to join the PTA," Mr. Palin joked at a Republican National Convention event in St. Paul, Minn., acknowledging how his own life was caught up in his wife's political whirlwind.

With his wife's notorious tenacity and competitive streak, "it's best to get out of the way," he said.

He has an appeal to certain women, whom I would prefer not really vote for us. I have female relatives who have admitted to me, in the past, that they voted for the candidate that was best looking. These same female relatives are quite intrigued by First Dude. I would not be surprised if they voted R this year (they are usually solid D’s).

Err, well let me fix that a bit, I guess you will take ANY vote you can get, but the sexist “whose cuter” vote is not a vote I’d be proud of.

I knew a man’s man like Mr. Palin. I called him Dad. (He and Mom raised 7 children... both worked.)

It's just one more example of how the Palins are more like real people than elitist political snobs.

Saw him and Sarah on Greta’s special. What a nice couple.

He is no pushover. These two are perfect for each other.

I wouldn't be surprised it Todd wasn't one of her closest political advisers. He really does know what the man on the street thinks, and I think she really respects him.

And that is why the Palins have connected so well. I think there are way more families like yours and mine connect with the Palins than do not. No matter what the left tries to say. America is going to stand TALL.

My husband was asking me what Sarah Palin’s husband was doing for a living, in a kind of derisive way. I told him that he is standing by his wife, right where he needs to be. I told my husband that I would do the same thing, that is have him standing next to me.

My husband rarely speaks out at a political meeting, but he is always there to defend me and stop the verbal attacks from the leftists (if he’s in town).

A Beltway woman gets a look at a regular guy and concludes he’s a secret weapon. Todd must look pretty good to many women who mostly interact with Capitol Hill bootlickers and spinmeisters.

Er ... how do they respond when you tell them that he is not the candidate? That would be more telling than whether or not they chose earlier races on looks.

This man is going to bring votes, not because he's good looking, but because he's a man who is secure in his masculinity. He's not "Mr. Mom", either, as he works the late shift, he doesn't stay at home while wifey goes to work. The appeal is that this couple is like so many all over America, both mom and dad are working and rearing the kids, (all five are not at home, either, I do wish the lamestream would get that detail correct as well). The left is beside itself, the reason they are trying so hard to eliminate this woman is that they know deep down, fly-over has much more in common and will appreciate the Palins and their story over the other side.

I've thought the same thing since the nomination.

Todd is the most "real" man in the race and he'll connect with a lot of men.

Todd Palin will go on a hunting trip in either Colorado, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Ohio, Washington State, or Wisconsin sometime before the election. We will find out about it after-the-fact. The press will interview the locals he went hunting with, and the locals will gush about hunting with Todd and give Todd their ‘thumbs up’. There will be pictures of the hunt made public, illustrating some large guns and even larger kill. And, it might force someone in the Obama campaign to go hunting, just like ‘Killer Kerry’ tracked down those geese in 2004. This is gonna be fun...

Oh, nonsense. I'm a very conservative woman who's been a registered and voting Republican for 40 years, and, as to Mr. Palin, let me just say: HUNK!!

Yes, but you dont vote for Palin BECAUSE her husband is cute. There are some women out there who just might. I know, it sounds pathetic, but I think there are alot of people who vote for someone based on the silliest of things.

I love subtle, self-deprecating humor!!!
