"The child support system is asking very poor people -- the fathers -- to support other very poor people --the mother and child. This has not worked and will not work, because the money just doesn’t exist.

"By pursuing these fathers with an iron fist collection policy, we turn these fathers into fugitives. This takes away the only thing the very poor father has to offer his child: his love and guidance." .... cont.

Maybe I’m just old fashioned, but if I really wanted to give my love and guidance, wouldn’t I marry the child’s mother?

I’m sorry you had a child you need to provide for it.

The point of the article is that the child support amounts exceed the ability of the fathers to pay. Even with jail hanging over their heads.

What if she didn’t want to get married, or you were married and she left you and took the kids? The fathers certainly aren’t always the bad guys in these cases. Women almost always get custody of the children. They can even get free lawyers if they lie and say they were abused. There are some evil women out there. I’m glad I never had to go through any of that. I’ve handled custody, visitation, and support cases as an attorney in the past. I wouldn’t touch one of those today. I don’t care what you pay me.

And then she’d leave you and the government would order you to do more than is reasonable, and if you can’t, they’ll hunt you down like a dog. You might like to be old fashioned but the modern reality is that you’re forced into the role they’ve decided for you. If you wish, you can ignore almost two decades of reporting on this stuff - and be surprised if / when it happens to you.

What if the child's mother doesn't want to marry?

Did you have a child that you didn't provide for?

> Somebody needs to ask obama if he loves the sound of bagpipes as the “second” prettiest sound on earth

Perhaps not. Depends on what the child’s mother is like. A bloke can end up owing child support to a perfectly horrid woman that, for some reason, he used to love — at least enough to get her knocked up.

A good mate of mine is going thru that right now. Married for 8 years, four kids. The strumpet decided she was tired of him and that she really wanted to be a lesbian.

She gets to stay in the house they rented: he gets to move out. And pay support for four kids: I do not know if that will continue after the trollop and her girlfriend get a Civil Union, I’d have to check the legislation.

But, that’s how it is sometimes: even if he wanted to stay married to the slattern, he can’t: the putain gets to keep the kids and he gets to pay.

Not funny at all!

So if the father gets laid off his job it's ok to take away his drivers license and put him in jail because he's not providing support? And I promise you, this DOES happen!

A lot of times child support gets set too high to begin with, or the noncustodial parent will lose his job and not have the money to hire a lawyer to get the support reduced or temporarily abated. It can really add up quickly and before you know it there are civil contempt and criminal nonsupport cases going against the guy at the same time. They'll take his drivers license from him, and any professional license he needs to make a living, and every time he gets a job he'll lose it because he gets thrown in jail again. It can become a real nightmare for these people even when they are doing their best to do the right thing.

“Not funny at all!”

No but all those quaint adjectives you used to describe your “mate's” ex sure were.

Requiring fathers give money to children they co-create is only part of what is required. They should be there hands-on parenting their own children.

If they can offer nothing else, let them take care of their children at home while the mother works. Or let them work at a daycare helping take care of other children who’s fathers have abandoned them.

as someone who paid out 48,000 dollars per year from 1995 till 2007 and all the plane tickets, medical bills, braces, insurance and today is paying for two colleges ...one private and one public and all after my ex-wife left me for a old fat guy who makes at a million a year I can tell you that divorce and child support is not as simple as you think

it is mostly pure unaccounted for alimony...

and what the wife did good or bad has nothing to do with it...she will get the kids unless she doesn’t want them in 99% of cases

women who don’t need it get too much and women who do need don’t get enough

this is blowback from free sex, feminism and no fault divorce....basically a clusterf^^k

I did the right thing, in the end I got the eldest daughter the second she could leave, the younger loves living in an environment of no structure

ex-wife is now divorced again and dates boys 25 years younger than her

men should be very very careful especially if they come into it with high earning potential

women will use children against you....even good women will find that weapon hard to resist..

They’re still his kids no matter what the mother does.
They need him.

And the mother is required to get a job (or train for a job) and send the kids to daycare while she works to support them.

Woe that parents actually have to support and care for the children they beget. How mean of us.

Here’s my horror story with child support. Married for 19 years, 3 children. Wife divorced me over another man, no big deal there, stuff happens. Oldest child was 18 already at divorce so not a factor, next a 16 year old son, who lived with me most of the time, but I had to pay the ex anyway, so said the judge. Daughter was 14 at the time, lived with the ex, so I paid the percentage of income that the judge said to. No problem with that either. But....in four years time, my ex kept taking me back to court to have child support increased for the daughter, meanwhile I’m paying for college for the other two and I keep getting squeezed more and more. The judges are women, the attornies are women, Florida Child Support will pay the legal fees of the custodial parent for a $25 fee. Basically they can keep hounding you, you have to pay your own attorney fees and the system is rigged against you.
Finally with 6 months left before my daughter was to turn 18 and I was looking forward to some financial breathing room, my ex takes me back to court again for another increase, the judge grants it AND makes it retroactive for the prior two years. THEN, since it’s retroactive, Florida Child Support Enforcement steps in and says you are in “arrears”, even though it just happened on that day. All of a sudden, in the eyes of Florida, you are a “deadbeat dad”. Then it goes on your credit report.........and on and on.
Please don’t think this is meant as an anti woman thing...that is not my point....the system is really screwy. This is ancient history to me now, my kids are nearing 30, but am I still bitter about the system? Yes, indeed.

Or make them work highway clean-up during the day and sleep in jails at night, and tie them to a post and whip them until they bleed, and make them roll in the mud and lick boots ....

How terrible that so many men have gone out in the world to spend their lives making money to provide food, clothing, shelter, entertainment etc. for their wives and children. How could they mistreat women and children so? Those greedy, self-centered bastards!

You go girl!
