◆Chinese doctors performed surgery on N. Korean leader after stroke

BEIJING, Sept. 14 KYODO

North Korean leader Kim Jong Il collapsed from a stroke on Aug. 14 and underwent surgery performed with help from five Chinese military doctors dispatched by China at North Korea's request, according to multiple Chinese sources.

The sources said that while Kim is recovering from the stroke, he is still experiencing problems in the functioning of his limbs, which is typical with stroke victims.

While his affected limbs are expected to recover to almost the way there were before the stroke, that will require a long period of rest and rehabilitation, they said.

A stroke occurs when a blood clot blocks an artery or a blood vessel breaks, interrupting blood flow to an area of the brain.

According to medical experts, somebody who suffers a small stroke may experience only minor problems such as weakness of an arm or leg, while people who have larger strokes may be paralyzed on one side of the body or lose their ability to speak.

Some people recover completely from strokes, but more than two-thirds of survivors will have some type of disability, experts say.

The remarks by the Chinese sources confirm what the South Korean government has said its intelligence shows -- that Kim is recovering from a stroke and that his condition is not likely to be serious.

Speculation about Kim's health was fueled by his failure to appear at recent events held to mark the 60th anniversary of his country's founding, including a massive military parade held last Tuesday.

The North Korean leader's absence from a military parade was the first since he became head of the country's troops in 1991.

In another change from previous anniversaries, the country's militia, rather than the regular army, navy and air force, took part in the parade, which meant there was no major military hardware displayed as in previous ones.

The Chinese sources said the North Korean authorities decided not to carry out a full-fledged military parade as it would appear strange to hold such an event without the country's top leader being present.

Kim's health has been poor in recent years. In 2006, while visiting China, he received treatment at a Chinese military hospital. He is also said to have been operated on by a German doctor last year.

They say the problem is mild and full recovery is possible, but I don't think so. If it takes a long recovery and rehabilitation, he won't be like what he used to be.

His workload should be cut down, and he is more prone to relapse or other complications. His brain cannot function as it used to. He is slipping.

Due to the doctors being chinese, his pacemaker has to be replaced every 17 minutes due to the battery leaking acid, and the pacemaker itself being made out of old ketchup packets from the US.

Yeah, he should take it easy with his busy workload of terrorizing his own people and starving them into midgets. God knows he deserves a break.

Not to worry. Someone else can help him.

Woodrow Wilson remained president even though he had a massive stroke. His wife, Edith, took care of everything.

The problem is that no one, except the poor starving wretches that make up the majority of the population, wants North Korea to implode.

China doesn’t want a U.S. ally on their border. South Korea doesn’t want the expense (although they know it’s just a matter of when, not if). Japan doesn’t want a resurgent rearmed Korea. Russia, which also shares a border with North Korea certainly doesn’t need any more instability at that area...

And America? Geez... we have enough headaches and enough on our plate as it is!

But the problem is not going to go away. Soldiers have guns. Starving soldiers are unpredictable.

It’s time to buy them out. Guarantee Kim Jong Il and his top leaders total immunity from prosecution, send them to a villa in China...

Most of the serious leaders know that their days are numbered anyhow. Let’s see if we can’t defuse this without a war. Germany showed it can be done.

Easy surgery; just re-string the puppet.

Must be hell for him to masturbate to western culture and torture his people with just one hand at the same time.

Seoul, Washington, and Beijing must be pretty busy with how to take care of new developments in N. Korea.

Judging from news which came out in public, I suspect they have pretty accurate information about what is going on.

I just hope Seoul and Washington would not screw up.

It's kind of hard to be a godlike ruler in that condition. Kim regularly causing flowers to bloom every time he visits a factory, or sick patients to feel better when he visits a hospital. That's kind of hard to pull off when they're wheeling you around, with a drool cup under your mouth and your head cocked to one side.

No, I think Kim is down for the count politically. That's not a country you can run without a strong, paranoid mastermind at the helm. If he's in no position to rule mercilessly, he'll find a new order, or competing orders, will arise below him, and he'll be powerless to stop them. They may even act in his name, and what's he going to do? Drool harder into his cup? Flail in his hospital bed?

I'm not seeing it. If he's even mildly incapacitated, the mice will play while the cat's away. They'll keep playing until this cat gets better, or a new one takes over. But by then, they might not want to stop playing at all.

Right. Up to now, time has been always on his side. His adversary has term limits. They all flail their arms to produce legacy before their time is up. On the other hand, his rule is for life. He just threatens to run out the clock. They all crumble and appease him with economic aids.

Now that his life is not far from end, it is now he who is racing against clock, not his adversaries. The whole game has changed. Besides, as you said, he also watch over his shoulder to make sure his minions are not poking him with long knives.

Seriously, this has gone on long enough. Give them an out!

Most of the geezers running the DPRK know that it’s just a matter of time before the whole system falls apart, and they fear they won’t survive that.

Give them an out!!!

Guarantee no reprisals... full integration with the ROK military...both of which are going to have their hands full for the next 10 years or so just feeding those poor bastards...

North Korea is not a poor place. There is absolutely no reason for what is going on except total mismanagement.

The Dear Leader's mistake was letting Chinese doctors operate on him instead of Cuban doctors. It's well established that Cuba has the finest health care in the world....although China's is outstanding as well. But Cuba's is so good that....Castro went to Spain for *his* surgery!

The reunification of East and West Germany almost brought West Germany (then one of the most prosperous and dynamic economies in the world) to its knees.Although South Korea is a prosperous nation reunification would be disastrous at this time.IMO there are ****no**** good options for NK.

He has a half brother he kicked out, a powerful brother-in-law, a sister, and three sons. Last and not the least, an ambitious and ruthless consort(the new unofficial wife.)

The stage is set for full-blown classic palace intrigues.

I’ve only witnessed stroke recovery in folks who were fairly young when they’ve had a stroke.
I don’t think he will recover.
His evil ways have finally caught up to him.
