Obama team upbeat in Va.

RICHMOND — Despite a recent poll showing Sen. John McCain taking 50 percent of the vote in Virginia, Sen. Barack Obama’s campaign manager says the historically red state still is “enormously competitive.”

Virginia and North Carolina remain central to the Illinois senator’s strategy to secure 270 electoral votes and win the presidential election, David Plouffe told reporters in those states on a conference call Friday. “We’re very confident in our strategy and in our message, and we are focused like a laser beam on states like North Carolina and Virginia,” he said. Plouffe added that Virginia’s viewers will see two new television ads — one talking about change and another calling McCain “out of touch” for, among other things, not knowing how to send e-mail.

President Bush carried Virginia in 2004 with 54 percent of the vote to 46 percent for Sen. John Kerry of Massachusetts, the Democratic nominee. Plouffe said he believes Obama can garner more support in Virginia than other Democratic presidential candidates in the recent past. The campaign believes it can do well in Northern Virginia and is showing “surprising strength” in the Tidewater area, Plouffe said. “We want to do as well as we can in the Southwestern part of the state — very, very important,” he said. Obama has campaigned in Southside and Southwest Virginia three times during his general-election campaign, including his trip Tuesday to Lebanon in Russell County.

Virginia has not backed a Democratic nominee for president in 44 years.

"Virginia has not backed a Democratic nominee for president in 44 years."

They'll need to continue their winning streak.

This Plouffe seems caught up in the throes of a BDS variant. I expect to see him go for his own throat shortly.

So, they plan to continue what they do best - lie.

VA and CO are central to Obama’s strategy.

CO could go blue, but I dont see VA doing it.

Just wait. Warner is about to get his much deserved beating in VA. Let’s wait till the end of September and see how upbeat this team is. The VA GOP is readying an attack.

I’m guessing the military folks here won’t like Obama mocking their war hero’s disabilities.

I’d like to get James Webb pinned down on that one — I don’t think he opposes McCain nearly as much as he hated Bush.

It’s lipstick on a pig from the source himself. Simply because he can’t say OMG WTF! he comes up with from the ObamaTron 2000 v.9.1.4 boilerplate generator.

- and immediately after the interview -

“Okay, you got what you need?”

Yes. Thanks, you’ve been very helpful.

“So, ah, we’re off the record now?”

Sure. What’s the deal?

(pause) (sniffle) “We are sooo screwed....”

Colorado is the last remaining "must win" state that really concerns me.

We are doing great in North Carolina, Missouri and Florida. We are on track in Ohio and Virginia. Nevada has finally started to come around as well.

In Colorado, the most recent polls show us ever so slightly behind. In the end, I think we take it, but it is likely going to be very, very close.

And they are certainly not about to start with a Muslim communist.

Plouffe must have missed that little gathering Wednesday in Fairfax (Northern Virginia, where the Commonwealth is most blue). Estimates varied, but most go along with the 23,000 count .. on two days’ notice ... on a weekday morning.

There was no free beer. No free brats. There was some really good country music before the rally began but no major rock concert.

From all appearances, those attending actually work for a living and chose to take time off to attend. Some took kids out of school. It was very telling abut where the Old Dominion is heading in November.

Local news just announced that Linwood Holton, the first Republican governor of VA in modern times, will campaign for Obama. His son-in-law, for whom he also campaigned, is the sitting Dem Gov. Keane who was frequently mentioned as a possible VP running mate for Obama. Somehow, I don’t see Holton pulling over any otherwise Republican or Independent votes.
