Hackers have mounted an attack on the Large Hadron Collider, raising concerns about the security of the biggest experiment in the world.
As the first particles were circulating in the machine near Geneva where the world wide web was born, a Greek group hacked into the facility, posting a warning about weaknesses in its infrastructure.
Calling themselves the Greek Security Team, the interlopers mocked the IT used on the project, describing the technicians responsible for security as "a bunch of schoolkids."

It’s a shame. I’d like to see what physics this machine may produce.

In A.D. 2008 Large Hadron Collider was beginning.
Captain: What happen ?
Mechanic: Somebody set up us the hack.
Operator: We get firewall.
Captain: What !
Operator: Main collider turn on.
Captain: It’s you !!
CATS: How are you gentlemen !!

The Greek civilization led to what we call Western Civilization.
The Greeks also came up with the first Trojan Horse.
Has anyone seen a “Trojan” passing through thier computers lately?

I was thinking it started on the west coast between universities and/or doctors as a way to pass information around. Maybe not.

How was it “hacked” when it’s supposed to be on “The Grid” and not WWW, with extremely limited access?

I was thinking it started on the west coast between universities and/or doctors as a way to pass information around. The internet started as a DARPA project to insure survivability of computer network communications in the case of nuclear war. The World Wide Web runs on the internet and was invented at CERN as a way to use hypertext to share research information.

That’s what I thought, I thought I saw a internet special on tv that said it was started by college professors in california, then fully developed by the military to its present glory.

The problem here is that the "Internet" isn't a single technology. The underlying network and TCP were invented by an American collaboration between the military and universities. The Internet/DARPANet at that time was ugly and was only useful to people who understood computer technology well. Tim Berners Lee at CERN developed HTTP as a method to transfer, display, and interlink documents over the Internet as a way to publish scientific papers. In 1993 CERN gave the technology away for free, inviting other people to use it for research...a move that is usually acknowledged as the "birth" of the WWW we know today. A couple of months later a kid in Illinois released Mosaic, the first web browser, and the Internet finally became useable and USEFUL for the average person.
The Internet was invented by the American military, perfected by CERN, and popularized by a 22 year old computer geek working on a grad project.

A few rather ugly rounds of Anti-Virus 2009 have hit here.
Even after AV, spybot, and Safety (I guess) live pronounce a box clean and OK, it still has nagging problems which require a reformat.

By the way, that 22 year old was Marc Andreeson, who later co-founded Netscape. Several people have posited in recent years that he may eventually be recognized as one of the most influential inventors in history. All modern web browsers still use the fundamental concepts he developed, and it’s entirely likely that we wouldn’t be having this conversation if he had chosen to do something else for his grad project.
