WASHINGTON, Sept. 12 (UPI) -- There were no surprises, no knockout zingers, but also no bloopers Thursday night in Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin's first TV interview since becoming the Republican vice presidential nominee.
Charles Gibson of ABC News was out for blood and inherently applied a double-standard compared with the kid gloves George Stephanopoulos used on Democratic presidential nominee Sen. Barack Obama of Illinois on Sunday night.
Gibson was out to embarrass Palin and expose her presumed ignorance from the word go. By contrast, when Obama referred to his "Muslim faith" on Sunday and did not correct himself, Stephanopoulos rushed in at once to help him and emphasize that the senator had really meant to say his Christian faith.
By contrast, Gibson tried to embarrass Palin by referring to her Christian faith in asking people to pray for U.S. soldiers in Iraq. Palin countered by pointing out she was following the precedent set by Abraham Lincoln.
Palin also expressed her support for Georgia and Ukraine joining the U.S.-led NATO alliance. That statement was predictable and consistent with the current policy of the Bush administration. The policy has dangerously raised tensions with Russia, but Palin is hardly alone in the conservative/Republican consensus in expressing her support for it.
Palin's assessment of foreign policy was competent and not embarrassing. Although she initially exhibited ignorance of the Bush Doctrine on pre-emptive strikes that has been a central pillar of U.S. foreign policy after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, she recovered quickly and then made the case clearly. Tactically, she made the mistake of trying to be friendly and informal with Gibson, who assumed a superior, professorial and critical stance toward her. She would have been far better going on the attack to rattle him.

Absolutely. But I also want her answers to be heard in full, in context.
Gibson/ABC was very selective in the editing and The Washington Post is playing right along.
I would also like to hear the whole answers and not watch a completely cut up and edited video of what the propagandists want me to hear.
Editing horrible, D- for ABC News.
“Of course but thats not really the point. The point is the Dem Presidential candidates gets velvet glove treatment and she (a conservative woman) gets clobbered.”
You didn’t know this going into this election? This hasn’t been the case for the last 48 years? You don’t think that Sara knew when she accepted the VP slot that this kind of treatment was coming from the media?
Look, Gibson was tough last night and maybe even a little over the top on a couple of questions but he could have really gotten into the gutter (left wing blog crap) and he didn’t do a lot of that.
OF COURSE if he had Obama on, it would have been a lot about “How are the wife & kids” Are you coming to the BBQ on Sunday?” and so on, but that is to be expected.
I have no problem with her being asked hard questions. I have a big problem with Obama NOT being asked hard questions.
“But it must be done the exact same way theyre handling Biden.”
You expect fair treatment from the MSM? How quaint.
“Charlie” may well have been the useful idiot we need to further our cause.
...
Thank you Charlie ,,,, you’re living proof that ABC is fair and balanced and that pigs can fly .
“Americans want unbiased media.”
We don’t have it.
We haven’t had it in a long time.
We’re not going to get it, ever.
Our side must learn to play the game by the rules set forth rather than whine about it’s unfairness.
Brit Hume said Charley is a profession ... yeah, he's a professional alright, a professional jackass rising from the dung of democrat sycophancy to do their filthy work.
Governor Palin not only did a superlative job during this democrat ambush, she showed outstanding patience with an asshat, a democrat sycophant worthy of nothing greater than ridicule.
The Drive-By Media just jump off the bridge with a cement Obama around their ankles. LOL
Chris would have been tough but fair. Ditto Brit.
I can’t look at Greta, I get vertigo.
Strangely fair from the normally left leaning UPI?
“I have a big problem with Obama NOT being asked hard questions.”
It will never happen.
Did you happen to notice how the Judy Woodruff interview posed McCain as small by having him sit in an oversized chair, much larger than Judy or the metrosexual freak next to her? ... We need to have smart media folks scrutinizing every aspect of thesed stagings. The choice of chairs was directed to a purpose ... and if I’m not mistaken, the chair was changed before the black messiah walked out to sit down and ramble. The background for the shots of McCain was also relevant to the image subliminally projected through the TV screen.
I think he did her a favor. Now she knows what to expect. This ain’t beanbag. Its war.
Sarah handled herself very well. If Joe OBiden was watching, he should be quaking in his boots (Sarah will toast him in the VP debate!)
I think this interview was horrible on ABC’s part. They blew a great chance to make themselves look good. His interview style, the ridiculous staging, the stilted sounding questions. The whole thing was just bad.
Gov. Palin, for her part, did very well, imo.

I thought the forum went well and I thought that Obama was the one that looked small for refusing to take the questions alongside Juan....My respect for Juan is growing stronger every day and has been since Saddleback. I likely will never like the guy but he has my grudging (and growing) respect.
