Charlie Gibson's Attempt to Twist Sarah Palin's Words

Hubris was indeed revealed in the ABC interview with Sarah Palin, and it wasn't coming from Sarah Palin, but Charlie Gibson. But there was more than Charlie's sneering condescending tone, looking down over the rim of his glasses like some snobby intellectual that bothered me. Twisting her words into a fabrication feeding the fear of theocracy was utterly insulting. It was especially insulting to claim that these were her "exact words" after being challenged on it. Watch this video excerpt from the interview to see the exchange.

Here is the transcript of the exchange:

GIBSON: You said recently, in your old church, “Our national leaders are sending U.S. soldiers on a task that is from God.” Are we fighting a holy war?

PALIN: You know, I don’t know if that was my exact quote.

GIBSON: Exact words.

PALIN: But the reference there is a repeat of Abraham Lincoln’s words when he said — first, he suggested never presume to know what God’s will is, and I would never presume to know God’s will or to speak God’s words.

But what Abraham Lincoln had said, and that’s a repeat in my comments, was let us not pray that God is on our side in a war or any other time, but let us pray that we are on God’s side.

That’s what that comment was all about, Charlie.

GIBSON: I take your point about Lincoln’s words, but you went on and said, “There is a plan and it is God’s plan.”

Actually, Charlie, that is totally untrue. Here is what she actually said:

“Pray for our military men and women who are striving to do what is right. Also, for this country, that our leaders, our national leaders, are sending [U.S. soldiers] out on a task that is from God,” she exhorted the congregants. “That’s what we have to make sure that we’re praying for, that there is a plan and that that plan is God’s plan.”

Here is a tip for the future Charlie. Try not to rely on the AP for your "exact quotes". It makes you look like a total fool, especially after condescendingly insisting you are correct.

The disgusted, condescending, irritated facial expressin of Charlie Gibson was unmistakenable.

I wish someone had some capture video pics of Charlies face.

ABC was deliberately trying to make the viewer feel uncomfortable by editing Palin’s interview like a Hollywood movie. Oliver Stone must have been in the editing booth.

Editing creates pace and emotion. The editor of this piece was trying to make the viewer feel unbalanced.

They inserted jump cuts, which are never used in TV journalism. That’s when an edit is made without the camera angle changing. That technique creates a feeling of uneasiness because it is jarring to the senses.

The rhythm of the edits were uneven , the camera angles were horrendous and the audio at times was cut off during some answers in a very jarring manner.

The producer and editor did everything in their power to present a disjointed and visually unflattering portrait of Palin.

Just compare the Palin interview to the free flowing, melodic nature of this Gibson interview with Barry:

Bottom line, it was a hit piece. Why she would ever go on a liberal station is beyond me. She needs to stick to the Reagan philosophy. Screw the media. Go on Rush, Sean, BOR, even Glenn Beck. The hell with the rest of them

Charlie:

Next time "you" have a have a question for Gov. Palin about the Bush Doctrine why don't "you" explain what “you” originally thought the Bush Doctrine was and not what “you” said it was last night in “your” condescending correction to Palin’s answer!

In the interview last night Charlie Gibson had this exchange with Gov. Palin:

GIBSON: Do you agree with the Bush doctrine?

PALIN: In what respect, Charlie?

GIBSON: The Bush -- well, what do you -- what do you interpret it to be?

PALIN: I believe that what President Bush has attempted to do is rid this world of Islamic extremism, terrorists who are hell bent on destroying our nation. There have been blunders along the way, though. There have been mistakes made. And with new leadership, and that's the beauty of American elections, of course, and democracy, is with new leadership comes opportunity to do things better.

GIBSON: The Bush doctrine, as I understand it, is that we have the right of anticipatory self-defense, that we have the right to a preemptive strike against any other country that we think is going to attack us. Do you agree with that?

The following is what Charlie Gibson has said in the past what the Bush doctrine is ... It is the same as Gov. Palin answered last night!

September 21, 2001 CHARLIE GIBSON: The president in his speech last night, very forceful. Four out of five Americans watched it. Everybody gathered around the television set last night. The president issued a series of demands to the Taliban, already rejected. We'll get to that in a moment. He also outlined what is being called the Bush Doctrine, a promise that all terrorists organizations with global reach will be found, stopped and defeated.

September 21, 2001 CHARLIE GIBSON: Senator Daschle, let me start with you. People were looking for a Bush Doctrine. They may have found it when he said the war on terror will not end until every terrorist group of global reach has been found, stopped or defeated. That's pretty broad. Broader than you expected?

Charlie Gibson tried to trap Gov. Palin with this interview question. As you can see from the qoutes above Gibson believes the Bush Doctrin is exactly the same as how Palin Answered!

Got you Gibson!

I wish she would have said “ why did you distort what I said? Are you trying to throw the race to Obama? Do you have an agenda? Why can’t you be fair and balance like Oreilly use to be?

No wonder they are so afraid of Palin, she is going to enable Mccain to not only win, but to win in a landslide AND change the game forever.

The Libs know when she wins it’s a game-changer...forever.

I did not see the interview but I've been listening to excerpts. Without a visual, I can tell you that Charlie Gibson's voice sounds like a dad calmly trying to discipline an unruly child. Sarah Palin's answers sound choppy, like the video has been spliced.

That said -- WHO is the handler who arranged for this interview on the same day she sends her son off to war? (and yes, I'd ask that if she were a male candidate, too). Until our side learns that the singular intent of any MSM interview is to "get" the Repub, we're lost.

Charlie Gibson lost the debate last night... on national TV

he showed that he is in league with Kouric, Olberman, and Mathews...

Pathetic; he should run for the democratic city council member in NY or become a community organizer.

My sister called this morning and said she had identified Charlie Gibson’s tone. It’s the tone a woman hears when a mechanic is talking down to her thinking she doesn’t understand a car problem. I likened it to Dabney Coleman’s character in 9 to 5, a completely sexist attitude toward a woman.

After the badgering regarding crossing over the border in Pakistan to deal with terrorists, Sarah needed to personalize it (Americans will understand it even if liberals don’t):

“Charlie, if someone who attacked you and then promised to kill you, your wife, and children, moved into your neighbors garage, you have some choices. You can go over to your neighbor and ask them to evict the lowlifes in their garage, but if your neighbor refuses or can’t deal with it, you go over there and deal with it yourself WITH OR WITHOUT YOUR NEIGHBOR’S PERMISSION! Of course, Charlie, there is the option of doing nothing and standing by while the thugs kill the people you love, but that’s not what John McCain and I are all about.”

Like he had a dog turd on his lip. What a cretin. And I think she was rather apalled at his unprofessional sneer.

BINGO! My wife was sickened by his tone, his whole posture and attitude.

And don’t forget they labeled the interview “War, God and Oil”. Those are not meant to be positives by this media, friends, they were saying Sarah Palin is for launching wars for God and oil.
