PRINCETON, NJ -- A potential shift in fortunes for the Republicans in Congress is seen in the latest USA Today/Gallup survey, with the Democrats now leading the Republicans by just 3 percentage points, 48% to 45%, in voters' "generic ballot" preferences for Congress. This is down from consistent double-digit Democratic leads seen on this measure over the past year.
(snip)
The positive impact of the GOP convention on polling indicators of Republican strength is further seen in the operation of Gallup's "likely voter" model in this survey. Republicans, who are now much more enthused about the 2008 election than they were prior to the convention, show heightened interest in voting, and thus outscore Democrats in apparent likelihood to vote in November. As a result, Republican candidates now lead Democratic candidates among likely voters by 5 percentage points, 50% to 45%.
If these numbers are sustained through Election Day -- a big if -- Republicans could be expected to regain control of the U.S. House of Representatives.

No pinches yet!
We’ll get some bumps until the debates.
I think we just might come out really ahead now, but when McCain/hussein and Palin/biden are up? It’ll be a huge bump again.
I hate to say I told people so.
Americans are smart as a group. People are coming home to the party that best represents them.
We won’t win back the house this time around. Many races did not field good candidates. You can’t count on the generic poll.
(Scroll to the bottom).
And yes, that predates her GOP convention speech.
Cheers!
Come Novemeber, there will be a lot of RAT one-term wonders who only got elected because the GOP base was pissed in 06.
Let’s not count our chickens before they hatch.
We have to play like we’re ten points down with two minutes left.
We have to give 110% and leave it all out there on the field.
We’re in the final stretch. This is where our experience and skill will pay off.
This thing is a long way from over. We have to maintain our concentration.
Ohplease-ohplease-ohplease-ohplease!!! Let there be Republican coat-tails!
We now return to your regularly scheduled haranguing!
Finishing strong is the key to victory!
The enemy hasn’t gone away, you know!
(etc.)
We don’t even have competitive candidates in a lot of districts though because many top Republicans chose not to run due to the bad political climate.
This poll may be a bit optimistic though as we all know. Hopefully its not too far off the mark and Republicans only lose a few seats less in the Senate. The house is too far gone, but keeping a strong minority to filibuster is key to the future of America.
I’m predicting Dole cruises to victory in North Carolina and Mary Landrieu gets knocked out.
Coleman will likely be helped out by McCain’s coattails and Franken’s weirdness.
Sununu will be one to watch. Recent polling numbers put him within one. Given McCain’s special connection to New Hampshire, I think he will have a fighting chance in New Hampshire. I’m not sure how Palin plays to New hampshire. She is a fiery libertarian in most aspects which fits well with the state but she is also socially conservative which does not.
And if Stevens still ends up winning Alaska despite his indictments, wowsers, Palin clearly was a game-changer.
Amazing what running as a strong conservative and not a RINO can do...
The GOP is gonna learn a lesson now.
Palin will win it for them. Why? Conservative.
Too many Chafee’s and weirdos have been in the GOP for the last 6 years ago so and have messed it up.
GOP better freaking see what awakens people. It’s conservativsm. Not libertarianism.. Not rinos really. We want the conservative style that Palin brings, and McCain is running on.
They both gotta keep that style going.
Under the demonRATs, the Congress has fallen to a 9% approval rating. They have done nothing but bitch and try to impeach Bush. They want to raise taxea and are licking their lips at an Obama presidency which would be the worst blow to our freedoms we could imagine.
If we don’t hit them HARD this November, then shame on us! A bad republican is far and away better than ANY demonRAT in the field.
Logistically, this is nearly impossible. Our recruitments, especially on the Senate side, are subpar, some don’t even HAVE a Republican challenger for seats we held 6 years ago (Arkansas). Most have a fraction of the $$ the Dems have.
Read the internals... GOP LEADS BY 5 in LVs. This is amazing.
It must be hammered home that Obama has voted 97% of the time with this do-nothing/no-drill incompetent Congress.
Amazing how wrong the media is when they “tell” you the news instead or reporting the news.
Just 2 months ago the MSM had Obama President for 8 years followed by Hillary for the next 8 and Congress in total control of the Democrat party for that whole period of time. You were told that not as a possibilty but as a for gone conclusion by the MSM.
Now in that short 2 months since thye were doing that, we come to today. When the chances that Obama will ever be Presiodent are getting slimmer and slimmer and now the lock on Congress that the Dems had is even getting challenged.
The once mighty MSM has become little more then a not so good PR firm for the Dems.
This news is astonishing. The Dems must be sweating bullets. Got to love it. I suspect in the end they will keep a majority in the House but perhaps their dreams of getting back to 1980s era numbers will not come true. In the Senate they probably will gain but if it is only 2 or 3 that is a whole lot better than the 7 or more they hope for. If Obama should still get elected president then they had better watch out in 2010 as that might be a bad year for them.
Still, things could turn back in the Dems’ favor. Look how long they held a big lead, now that seems to have evaporated. So the trends can change quickly. It’s a little scary how often voters will change their minds. I guess all we can do is work for and contribute to the best candidates and hope common sense wins.
"Oh crap."
I saw the polls closing. It is time to give even more to our candidates and make this election national success not just a Presidential one. We have an opportunity like not since 1994.
.....The enemy hasnt gone away.....
Let’s kick up the rhetoric a notch from sports to war.
We have to attack, attack, attack.
We need to build a very large ammo dump of contributions to the various RNC and Presidential funds. We need to be sure the funds are available to fight the battle and exterminate the Rat enemy all across the battlefront.
We must mount and limber up the big guns like Newt and Fred to concentrate fire on the important targets. We must concentrate fire or Smart Bombs on individuals in the MSM. The targets must not be general like NBC, but very specific like Matthews or Brokaw.
Rat blood and guts spilled on the field spell victory
Please let this be true, I’d love to see Pelousi demoted.
