McCain Blows It - Defends Obama's Community Organizer Record (Goes After The Moderate Vote Alert)
Michelle Malkin.com ^ | 9/11/2008 | Michelle Malkin

You know, I was going to call it a night. And then I saw the story about John McCain’s appearance at the 9/11 Columbia University forum earlier this evening.

Every time you grit your teeth and defend this guy, he pulls something like this. Hey, Maverick: Way to throw Sarah Palin, Rudy Giuliani, and your strategists who had the sense to seize on Obama’s abysmal, ineffectual record as a Chicago rabble-rouser under the bus!

Criiiiiikey:

Barack Obama and John McCain attempted to set their differences aside Thursday night, if only for a moment, as they encouraged Americans to volunteer in their community and military at a forum on national service.

Few sparks flew at the Columbia University event, hosted by ServiceNation. The candidates — who were interviewed separately — were encouraged to keep campaign politics to a minimum, out of respect for victims of the Sept. 11 attacks.

In that spirit, McCain at one point softened the language used by his running mate last week at the Republican National Convention, where she mocked Obama’s early days as a community organizer.

“Governor Palin was responding to the criticism of her inexperience, her job as a mayor in a small town,” McCain explained. “Of course I respect community organizers. Of course I respect people who’ve served their communities, and Senator Obama’s record there is outstanding.”

“Outstanding?”

Are you kidding me? Does McCain need talking points on the government-subsidized fraud machine that is ACORN? Here are the ACORN Watch archives: Print and read.

Does McCain even know about the Annenberg Challenge disaster? Someone set up a briefing for him with Stanley Kurtz, stat! Is he even aware of Obama’s own disavowal of his failed community organizer efforts?

McCain has just taken one of his own campaign’s most effective lines of attack against his opponent’s feckless, far Left past and tossed it away — like the rose Obama flung in the water.

What’s next? Will McCain attack those who mock Obama’s “outstanding” community organizer record as racist, too?

Banging. Head. Against. Wall.

***

Hey, let’s put some salt in the wound: A cabinet position for Obama to boot!

Maybe he’ll be named Secretary of the Soros Slush Fund.

Like the Bush "New Tone?" Is that what Freepers are giving slack to now? We've been down that road before! We need to DEFEAT the other side, not make nice with them.

You’re right. I’m miffed too. However, McCain is not being seen as going negative against 0bama. With all the hate coming from the 0bama camp, this may pay off in the end.

Barack Obama for Secretary of the Department of Rainbows and Unicorns, which is where liberal and maverick fantasies go for implementation. Of course, that would put Dennis Kucinich’s career plans on hold for a while.

lol. :-D Perfect job for Zero.

McCain is trying too hard to not have conflict today, 9/11. He is not engaged in the fight on this date and is expecting his opponents to respect the solemnity that is 9/11. Obviously, the left could give a flying-—u-know- what about respect and think 9/11 was our fault anyway.

McCain is 72 years old. Leave the immature insults to Obama who will look less mature and Presidential everytime he opens his mouth in the same zip code as John McCain.

What’s a community organizer in Chicago do, organize the independant minor dealers in the hood into a large drug cartel?

That's why JimRob and I and a lot conservatives support the guy with a good deal of teeth-gritting and he pulls something like this! Obama is NOT our moral and intellectual equal. In fact, the entire faux 9/11 ceremony this morning turned me off.

Because playing nasty has been very unhelpful to the other side ? Because it helps to have an image of benevolence, “niceness”, and Christian charity ?

McCain has every reason to be a gentleman, including engaging in polite hypocrisies. That takes focus and discipline. He is not there to indulge himself or please us, he is there to win an election. Every word has to be calculated.

It would be very satisfying to a lot of us partisans to hear a thorough rant against our enemies, but that wouldn’t help in the big picture.

Yes, the community organizer issue, the more it’s clung to, seems to suggest Obama should be the head of some subcommittee on community organizing or something, rather than President. And one wonders just WHY nothing is ever made of his presumably more influential and sophisticated one year tenure as the editor of the Harvard Law Review. I was just reading up on that, and there’s not a helluva lot there either. All of the Harvard Publications have editors on a yearly basis, hell....an old friend of mine edited the Harvard Advocate one year...it’s considered a classy resume padder, a stepping-stone into the Literary or Legal Establishment. I don’t think Obama actually did much with it.

I agree and also think it was the right strategy. Malkin gets carried away sometimes and doesn’t grasp that the worst thing McCain could do to Zero is to be condescending — that is for the rest of the people surrounding Sen McCain and all of us.

He needs to stay above the fray with Obama except to swat him like a fly when he goes after Gov Palin.

Senators are just too sickeningly sweet to each other . Of course it is phony , but why play footsie around the community organizer history when Obambi’s people are equating him to Jesus and Governor Palin to Pontius Pilate .

From what i hear it is only the beginning. Unlike Bush Mac will not posture with the turn the other cheek jive. Mccain just appointed former federal prosecutor Edward O’Callaghan to head up the Palin truth squad. (google the guy , he is the real deal ).

“That is the plan. Palin and GOP surrogates will be the ones who go after Obama. McCain will play statesman.”

then obama is tempted to go after Palin and gets whacked.

Agreed.

Anyone who has been watching McCain's TV ads knows that his kid gloves are off.

This was the anniversary of September 11, so I imagine that he said all of this to keep things pleasant.

When the 527’s let go with the big volleys that some of the mushy-middle and independents haven’t heard of it will be the final nail in the coffin.

The last push to the inevitable landslide, McCain will never say anything negative, that’s his choice. He had just better shut up when those ads run and just say, “are they accurate, that’s what matters”.

“He wants to reach out to the moderates, independents and disaffected liberals.”

If I recall correctly, thats exactly what Reagan did. You may not have noticed it, but I did.

He was a great politician who would never have said “He’s not one of us”. That sort of thing is terrible politics.

I agree with Michelle - she nails it. It’s classic McCain: sticking his finger in the eye of the base he should be in agreement with, and throwing away issues that could be a winner for him.

Questioning Barack’s resume item of “community organizer” is completely legitimate for two reasons:

1. It’s not a real job. Do you know anyone who is a community organizer? I don’t. I know doctors and engineers and factory workers. I don’t personally know any communtiy organizers. It’s a made up job for radical agitation.

2. It defines Obama as what he is - a leftist.

Sarah Palin knows the value of challenging Obama on this “experience” credential. John McCain is throwing away the issue. Palin should be on the top of the ticket.

-"McCain is running a perfect campaign..."

Without question!

In fact, any criticism (kneejerk or otherwise) coming out of this forum, I would find disingenuous at best, and subversive at worst.

So stop the BS NOW, and aim the disdain in the proper direction.
