Scientists who are preparing to 'switch on' the most powerful particle accelerator ever built, have received death threats from critics who fear it could destroy the Earth.
The £5 billion Large Hadron Collider (LHC) will smash protons - one of the building blocks of matter - into each other at energies up to seven times greater than any achieved before.
In the flashes from the collisions, scientists expect to reproduce conditions that existed during the first billionth of a second after the Big Bang at the dawn of creation.
But some of those working on the LHC have received threatening emails and worried phone calls from members of the public, who fear it could create a devastating black hole.
A lawsuit has been lodged at the European Court For Human Rights by a small group of maverick scientists hoping to stop the experiment.
No-one knows precisely what will come tumbling out of the primordial soup of disintegrating protons.
But Professor Brian Cox of Manchester University, who will be working on the ATLAS detector, responded angrily to doomsayers who have predicted an Armageddon.
'Anyone who thinks the LHC will destroy the world is a t***,' he told The Telegraph.
Scientists could find answers to some of the biggest questions in physics, such as why the universe looks the way it does, and how to explain mass, gravity and mysterious 'dark matter'.

So....Are we still here?
4 days old, and posted a couple times when it was new..
Hmmm, Twit? Twat? what word that starts with a "t" would be marked out I wonder...
Death threats are all the rage, lately.
All things considered, I prefer this to freezing to death.
No detail about those threatening science. Ergo they are on the Left.
Irradiated food.
Nuclear power generation.
Climate change.
Particle accelerators.
As usual, the 10% of the competent carry the remainder of humanity on their intellectual backs.
And keep improving their lives in spite of themselves.
are you logged on?
Well, it is good to see some crazies who are AGAINST the end of the world.
The proper scientific question isn’t “are we still here?” but “is the stupid cat still here?”
And as I looked down this morning, yes, our stupid cat is still here and alive. Ergo, we’re still here.
Given that the professor is a Brit, most likely word would be ‘turd’.
If a black hole were created, wouldn’t it fall immediately through the mechanism on its way to the Earth’s center of mass? And wouldn’t this be totally undetectable until the crust began to implode?
Never mind, nothing to see here, just move along.
The left throws around “intellectual” a lot. ‘Twould be interesting to see how many of these idiots that don’t know much about black holes (except that it’s some kind of racial insult) come from the left.
Will these experiments prove the existence of God?
This is what these kooks are afraid of.
Great definition of the brain dead in America. Where do these insane nitwits come from.
Is a what? Is this an Anglo-Saxonism I've never heard of, or politeness run amok?
