A North Sacramento man shot and killed an armed intruder early Tuesday as his pregnant wife and children awoke in terror from the attack. The man, whom police did not identify, told police that two men had tried to break into his home just after midnight in the 800 block of Carmelita Avenue off Rio Linda Boulevard.

The resident, who had no telephone, pleaded with neighbors to alert police after the shooting, neighbors said. A neighbor who provided refuge for the resident and his family after the attack recounted what the man told him. The resident heard scuffling and banging on his door, said Robert Jerome, the neighbor. Looking through a peephole, the resident saw a man holding a .22 caliber pump-action rifle, Jerome said. By the time the man got his shotgun, the intruders had partially opened the door, the resident told Jerome and police.

The resident fired once through the gap in the doorway, striking a 19-year-old Sacramento man, police said. The other suspect or suspects fled, but the 19-year-old, dropped the gun from his hand, staggered into the cul de sac before collapsing dead, the resident told the neighbor and police.

That man saved his family’s life, and saved the taxpayers a lot of money trying to rehabilitate this “poor misguided youth”.

It would appear that the rehabilitation process was a total success. That man is now 100% ready to assume his correct role in society.

How in he%% in today’s world does one not have a simple land line telephone? LOL! Before I began using my telephone line for the internet, I came REALLY close to dropping landline service. I worked nights and virtually hated the phone.

Still do. Hate phones, I mean. I just tie up the connection by going online soon as I walk in the door, heh. And no, I don't have a cellphone. I live with the certainty that when you need it most, the infernal contraption will let ya down. Got guns (and dogs) & know how to use 'em, though. :o)

Did you correlate to how many were charged after using a gun in self defense?

“That was the old paradigm. The new paradigm is for thugs to volunteer for military service and then volunteer for combat duty. They'll behave themselves while in the military in order to get the all important training and more important on the job experience so they can return to the ‘hood and teach it to their homies or worse form squads of combat experienced thugs to prey upon their victims. So far this has become a real issue in California and New Jersey IIRC. I've even seen some FR threads on the phenomena. You cap a round at a group like this and one or two will return fire to fix your position while the rest flank you and take you out. There was a shooting at a gas station in California about 18 months ago that reported this exact tactic when the police responded to the silent alarm of a robbery in progress. The first pair of responding officers was killed in exactly this manner.”

No doubt there are a small number of groups with this mindset. There *always have been*, such as the Hell's Angels.

As far as I can discern, however, they remain a tiny minority of violent criminals. That doesn't mean that they are not incredibly dangerous,or that they should be ignored. It just means that the chance of encountering them is very, very, small, except in certain localities where the risk is likely well known.

The Hell's Angels have been around for how many decades? They attracted an element of rogue military types to start with. We shall have to wait and see if this pattern of behavior relating to the military becomes a trend involving a wider phenomenon of gang members who have no origins in the military volunteering for the specific purpose of just getting the combat experience under Uncle Sam's training dime. Once that trend takes hold it may spread beyond the gangs to individual criminals who just want to get better. One symptom of this is the training given by hardened cons in prison to younger more inexperienced guys. What they get in return for this schooling, I don't want to speculate on.

Just for the record, we do bare arms in california. I carry mine loaded with frangibles and in my direct control at all times, in my TAXI....yep you got it ..my taxicab...california law requires a cab driver be a self employed businessman. The state supreme court has ruled that a cab driver is a businessman and that his place of business extends to escorting customers to and from their door, including the act of going to the door to notify them of his arrival. And, further, that he may be carry the firearm loaded and concealed on his person while conducting his business...(see calif concealed weapons control, via calif penal code)..see a book entitled..”HOW TO OWN A GUN IN CALIFORNIA AND NOT GO TO JAIL”..if its still in print

Perhaps the no good sob that made the babies with her took off and abandoned this wellfare mom, leaving her with little other choice? Happens alot, everwhere in our nation. MEN just dont live up to their responsibilities. And, yes ...WE pay for it. Find the dads and nueter them, or squeeze their ***** till they pay up! Oh, yeah..one more thing...they dont use food stams anymore. They use WIC coupons (women in crisis), and an EBT (electronic balance transfer) cards, now. Peace to you all

a man holding a .22 caliber pump-action rifle

I may not be an expert on guns, but could someone explain what that is (except maybe an airgun that fires 22-caliber pellets?

Still, though, it was a weapon, and my response would have been the same.

More and more people are dumping land lines for cell phones as their only phone. If you know how bad cellular 911 is, you wouldn’t, but many people do.

There are quite a few pump action .22 rifles. They used to be very common as “gallery guns”. Nice rifles, very fast manual action. They have become much less popular with the introduction of inexpensive .22 semi auto rifles over the last 40 years.

The taurus 62C is a current model of pump action .22.
