Baby dies as new milk powder scare spreads across China
Thu Sep 11, 12:56 AM ET
A health scare in China involving babies developing kidney stones after drinking possibly fake milk formula has spread across the country, state media said on Thursday.
One baby had died from kidney stones in northwest Gansu province, Xinhua quoted health officials as saying, but it was not clear if there was any link to milk powder in that case.
The health scare has revived memories of a grim scandal involving fake milk powder that killed at least 13 babies in eastern China in 2004.
An unknown number of infants in at least seven provinces and regions were suffering from kidney stones after drinking milk formula marked "Sanlu," Xinhua news agency said, citing local media reports.
Xinhua on Wednesday quoted doctors at a hospital in Gansu as saying that "fake milk powder" from one brand could have been responsible for kidney stones developing in 14 patients, all infants under 11 months.

Ping!
Very sad and tragic.
uh, breastfeeding would solve that problem.
they sure don’t care who they make ill or poison
Women who adopt babies can’t breastfeed. I agree though that it’s the best, just not possible for some.
Dreadful. RIP.
it is also rare, but some women who give birth can’t breastfeed. I had a neighbor friend who smoked heavily, and could not breastfeed. I was able to breastfeed even after having to have my gall bladder out 8 weeks after a
c-section.
There are also groups who will provide breastmilk for newborns in some co-op.
It is better than a formula by far.
Thanks for posting. Very interesting. PING.
Well I suppose we can guess what product will be exported to the West in vast quantities from the Peoples Republic of China NEXT, now can’t we?!?
Hmmmm, maybe THAT’S what happened to Kim Jong Il in North Korea, he’s too old to breastfeed, had to have his powdered milk...
Ahhhh yes, it’s all becoming clear now ... ;)
Many women in China work long hours - I doubt that they have breast pumps and refrigerators and work breaks to pump - not that pumping is easy, either. And some of them leave the baby with its grandparents while they work at a distant city.
The article mentions a scandal a few years back when a number of babies starved to death on a fake formula. I can’t imagine the depths of amorality you need to starve or injure babies for your profit.
This is what we will have to put up with, with the liberals globalism.
Obama was just telling us how great China is....
It is terrible.I knew they use Melamine in pet's food and other food, but I never know Chinese producers dare to use it in baby's milk powders.
More about China's food pollution,see this, http://www.nytimes.com/2007/04/30/business/worldbusiness/30food.html
yes, the made in china label can be translated as “Danger- This Product May Kill You”
why do we continue to do business with unethical chicoms?
