Democrats' proposal would allow some new offshore drilling ("some"? Americans want it all!)

WASHINGTON — Oil and gas producers might soon be able to drill in the eastern Gulf of Mexico, as well as along the Atlantic coast from Virginia to Georgia under an energy plan being crafted by House Democrats.

Democratic leaders today were still piecing together what House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., called a "reasonable compromise," with plans to bring the bill to the floor for a vote by the end of the week.

While details are still being worked out, the plan would raise taxes on the oil companies; force producers that benefited from botched lease agreements with the federal government to pay royalties; require electric utilities to generate 15 percent of their power from renewable energy sources; and provide loan guarantees to auto makers to help produce more fuel efficient cars.

Pelosi insists the plan would "make America energy-independent of foreign oil within a decade."

Even with details still sketchy, House Republicans were quick to blast the proposal. They support an ``all of the above'' policy that would include expanded offshore drilling, exploration in Alaska's Arctic National Wildlife Reserve, and development of oil shale resources.

gosh, isn’t that nice of them to allow us to use a little bit of our oil?

as they get around the world and drive around in their suv’s.

i’d like to see a plan how the dems think we’ll be using alternative energy in 10 years. i don’t believe it.

Their plan is to limit it so there is little or no price impact.

Then they will snivel and say "See, we told you so".

They need to be removed from office and out of the way of progress.

If the "O & Joe Show" is elected, the plan undoubtedly includes "re-education" camps with generators connected to very large "hamster wheels."

“democrat”

has come to mean

“evil”

in my book!

it’s evil to work for the destruction of this country,

and it’s evil to work with our enemies.

Let’s see, raise taxes on oil companies who then pass on the tax to me as a cost of doing business, pass a law ex-post facto, force utility to “generate 15% of their power from renewable resources” and make it happen with a wave of the gavel I suppose, and loans to car makers to develop alternative fuel vehicles.

So far, all I can see are $$$$$ flying out of my pocket to the government. No, thanks.

As a 5th generation Southern Californian I want oil drilling from the beach out in Southern Csalifornia!

I consider Pelosi an illegal aliean from the east coast that shoulden’t have any say in whether we drill or don’t in California!!!!!!

The anti-American Leftists/Democrats had better stand aside, cease and desist in all their hindering activities and those of their “environmentalist” watermelons — Green on the outside, but red inside puppets.....

America has finally awakened and can see what the Democrat Congress has done INTENTIONALLY to harm our economy in order to deny Bush a strong economy and favorable rating.

They put party power politics ABOVE the welfare of the Republic... Now, THEY will pay the price......

If Pelosi thinks this much will make us energy independent in a decade, why not go full bore and get us independent sooner?

Could it be because it’s a ploy?

I have to wonder - is there a guarantee that there is oil where they are talking about allowing drilling? Or is this a ploy to say “We are allowing them to drill but they are refusing” while knowing there is no oil / gas to drill for?

Nancy, you ignorant slut. Just who do you think will finance this?

Are Democrats truly this stupid or is it just their constituents?
