WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. House of Representatives Republican leaders on Tuesday called on New York Democrat Charles Rangel to step down as chairman of the tax-writing Ways and Means Committee pending a House investigation of possible ethical breaches.
In a letter to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Republican leaders questioned Rangel's ability to lead the committee after his lawyer revealed last week that he failed to report $100,000 of income from a villa he owns in the Dominican Republic.

Pelosi spokesman Nadeam Elshami accused Republicans of playing politics and trying to divert public attention from financing scandals that have hurt the Republican party.
"The American people would be better served if Republicans would stop playing politics and allow the bipartisan Ethics Committee to do its job," he said in a statement.
Rangel's finances have been under scrutiny since July, when the New York Times reported that the lawmaker lived in multiple reduced-rent apartments provided under a plan to preserve affordable housing in New York City.

How do you live in multiple apartments in the same city?
or does he has undeclared income on some of those as well?
So she can insist on a bigger airplane, of course.
How else could she justify it?
That is what BIG government is all about.
Probably because she can’t speak for herself! Every time she opens her mouth, lies come out.
By GOP rules (not the House or Rat) he had to step down from his leadership position and the threat of a trial lost him the election. Do I have that right?
Rangel's finances have been under scrutiny since July,
How much more freaking time do they need?
Inspector goes to the building where Chuckie holds multiple apartments.
Hiya, Chuck. This one yours? "Yup". This one? "Yup". And these two? "Yup. Sorry. Ignore the goats."
See!! Less than one minute. Why do they need since July?
Hi, Sarah!
Whatz up Chuck? Sorry I’ll go to my room now.....
“pelosi spokesman nadeam elshami accused republicans of playing politics...”
these people are just like some irresponsible democrats with whom i’m acquanted. there is no end to their irresponsiblity towards those around them and they’re incorrigible.
these democrats in congress have alot of answering to do and so do their constituents. if these scu&bags win this next election this country is going to turn into a pigpen run by brown-shirted thugs.
IMHO
Lol! Charlie isn’t going anywhere. He is the Emperor of Harlem.
William Jefferson, Democrat from Louisiana, has not even been touched as of yet so why would we expect a much more powerful guy like Rangel to be worried. The Republicans immediately step down or get booted but the Dems hang on. Each vote is important to their power so ethics violations are just a bothersome speed bump.
On a related topic it looks like freezer Bill will be reelected for another term now 3 years after his office was raided by the FBI who found $90k in cash bribes stuffed in his freezer. Again, black democrat don't need to follow no stink'n rules.
He failed to report $100K in passive income over the past 20 years? Ouch, if the IRS does its job that’s gonna’ leave a mark.
“Pelosi spokesman Nadeam Elshami accused Republicans of playing politics and trying to divert public attention from financing scandals that have hurt the Republican party.”
Yes!! How dare the Republicans cast light upon the democrats and their financing scandals? I mean, the democrats are as clean as a preacher’s sheets....if that preacher was Jim Bakker or Jimmy Swaggart.
If this call caused Rangel to *** of laughter it might actually by worthwhile.
“You beat me to it. Tom Delay was an effective GOP whip. Thus, he had to be destroyed. I’m not from TX, but didn’t a rat prosecutor indict him three or four years ago?”
That’s what happened. Ronnie Earle is a horribly partisan democrat hack District Attorney. He had Delay indicted just so he would have to leave his position, and to get the arrest pics out there. Nothing has ever come of it all, and probably never will.
Thankfully, Earle is retiring, effective January 1. Unfortunately, I would guess that whoever is next will be just as partisan.
“the threat of a trial lost him the election.”
He actually withdrew from the election. His constituents would gladly elect him again.
