Saying that Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin "scares the hell out of me," former New York Mayor Ed Koch endorsed fellow Democrat Barack Obama on Tuesday.
In 2004, Koch backed President Bush for re-election saying the Republican incumbent was better equipped to combat international Islamic terrorism than Democratic candidate John Kerry.
Koch, who was mayor of New York from 1977 to 1989, said he has concluded that the country would be safer in the hands of Obama and running mate Joe Biden than presidential candidate John McCain and Palin.
"Protecting and defending the U.S. means more than defending us from foreign attacks," Koch said, citing such concerns as civil liberties, abortion rights, gay rights and access to health insurance.
Koch said he is particularly troubled by Palin's record in those areas.
"It's Palin primarily," he said. "She scares the hell out of me."
Koch called Palin a "plucky, exciting candidate" but also said: "If the vice president were ever called on to lead the country, there is no question in my mind that the experience and demonstrated judgment of Joe Biden is superior to that of Sarah Palin."

"If the vice president were ever called on to lead the country, there is no question in my mind that the experience and demonstrated judgment of Joe Biden is superior to that of Sarah Palin."
What about Obama huh? Your presidential candidate has less experience than anyone. Now that's scary.
Nevermind that Obama would "lead" the country on DAY ONE!!
Ed Koch is a big Hillary supporter, and has said in his New York Post columns that he was supporting G.W. Bush but that as soon as Hillary ran, he would do whatever he could to see that she was elected.
With that understanding, it’s clear that Ed sees what’s going down - Hillary’s only chance at 2012 is if B. Hussein Obama is not elected president. But he can’t come out and support McCain or else he will have no credibility with the Democrat party in 2012 (assuming he’s still alive then) and thus be unable to help Hillary.
In my view, this is a short term tactical decision on his part with the objective of seeing Hillary run in 2012.

Considering where Joe Biden stands with Almighty God, the whole country could be collateral damage. Consider that.
Ed Koch is a gasbag, amazing how he still gets press.
It sure doesn’t take much to scare the ‘Koch’.
What matters is first how the two Presidential candidates compare, then is how each of the Vice-presidential candidates compares to the opposing Presedential candidate.
McCain > Obama
McCain > Biden
Palin > Obama
The question of Palin vs Biden is irrelevant because you can't have a situation where if Obama passes away Palin becomes President nor one where if McCain passes away Biden becomes President.
It’s one thing for Bush. It’s another thing for Sarah Palin.
This woman does not even have to say a word. The mere fact that she’s on the ticket, PROVING that people like her actually exist is DEATH to liberals. You’re talking about people who literally don’t believe that real women like her could possibly have the beliefs she does.
1) She’s a successful, self made woman. Proving that women can do it ON THEIR OWN, sans government or interest groups. Proves that women don’t have to be on the groupthink reservation to have careers. Obliterates their arguments on that score.
2) She’s had 5 children, proving that women can be successful AND have a family EVEN A LARGE ONE. Proves what are supposed to be the things that feminists stand for without all the liberalism they insist is necessary.
3) She’s pro-life and has given birth to a baby with Down’s Syndrome. Decimates the liberal fallacy that pro-lifers would never actually live their views. Some even don’t believe that ANY women are actually pro-life, save a few ‘far right winger fundies’. Absolutely murders the narrow view that liberals see conservatives through. This makes even their most brainwashed supporters stop and think for a second...they can’t afford that.
4) One of her children is going to Iraq. Common ‘chickenhawk’ argument obliterated and AGAIN by her living her views.
5) She’s beaten corruption within both parties, but mostly within her own, laying waste to the idea of a ‘Republican Culture of Corruption’ governing all Republicans. Even if they continue to slime Republicans, SHE will be above it. They don’t like that at all.
6) She maintains a loving and close relationship with her family, including her husband, while maintaining outstanding professional success. This is something many liberal women don’t have. When they see someone else with it, they wonder why she’s able to do that and why they can’t. They start to ask questions. The Dems can’t have that.
Those reasons (and a lot more) are the reasons why even more ‘reasonable’ Dems are troubled by her.
While Ed Koch is a good man and an honest man, when looking at someone who’s very existence disproves much of what he believes, he’s bound to react in such a manner.
Ed was a combat infantryman in WWII.
In general, he's a throwback to an earlier era, before total commies and enviro-nutjobs took over the Democratic party. You could talk to them back then. We all seemed to want the same things for America, we just disagreed with how to achieve those goals. Now we seem to want have completely different visions for America's future.
He's wrong about Sarah, but I give him a pass on being a wimp.
Ed thought ALL the residents of New York State OUTSIDE NYC wore plaid and gingham, shopped exclusively at Sears, and drove pickup trucks.
It sank his run for governor.
It does not surprise me that a true rural conservative would scare him silly.
Despite Mayor Ed’s support of President Bush, he has always been a huge fan of Mrs. Clinton. Go figure.
Ed, take a nap.
Sarah is the Piped Piper chasing all the rats and snakes out of this country.....lol

I am concerned that the “she supported Buchanan” smear may take hold and could hurt in Florida.
"civil liberties" = affirmative action. No such right in the Constitution or Natural Law. Government should not be involved.
"abortion rights" = right to kill children. No such right in the Constitution or Natural Law. Government should not be supporting this.
"gay rights" = additional rights for those with disordered minds. No such right in the Constitution or Natural Law. Government should not be involved.
"access to health insurance" = redistribution of wealth. No such authority in the Constitution or Natural Law. Government should not be involved.
Is there anything this liberal is concerned with that is actually a function of government?
Liberalism is indeed a (dangerous) mental disease.
Koch has always been bigoted against Christians
