WHAT MAKES PEOPLE VOTE REPUBLICAN?
http://www.edge.org/3rd_culture/haidt08/haidt08_index.html ^ | Jonathan Haidt

If Democrats want to understand what makes people vote Republican, they must first understand the full spectrum of American moral concerns. They should then consider whether they can use more of that spectrum themselves. The Democrats would lose their souls if they ever abandoned their commitment to social justice, but social justice is about getting fair relationships among the parts of the nation. This often divisive struggle among the parts must be balanced by a clear and oft-repeated commitment to guarding the precious coherence of the whole. America lacks the long history, small size, ethnic homogeneity, and soccer mania that holds many other nations together, so our flag, our founding fathers, our military, and our common language take on a moral importance that many liberals find hard to fathom.

Title: Because this is a center-right country. Not a radical leftist country. And, God help us, it never will be. This election has already gone a long way to educating the mindless ignorant voters about what the radical left stands for, and it certainly is not about America, its Constitution, a government for and by the people, our defense, or controlled government. Understatement.

Only a democrat could write and article this stupid.

where do I even start... “The Democrats would lose their souls if they ever abandoned their commitment to social justice” [because evil Republicans don’t want ‘social justice’ -whatever that means]

*sigh...

can’t we just put them out of their misery?

Democrats are for democracy...
Democracy is MOB Rule by mobsters that results in socialism..

If you are NOT for Mob Rule.. then may be a Republican..

We lack ethnic homogeneity and soccer mania so we bitterly cling to our common language and our founding fathers.

What a bunch of liberal gobbledygook nonsense.

The Democratic Party is run by elites who keep power by stirring trouble among the lower class and pointing fingers at the Republicans.

The Democratic Party Elites have no intention to improve the lower class situation because then they lose their power base.

The lower class who buy into the deception are simple minded fools who are largely influenced by pop culture i.e. television, movies etc.

Rove’s weather machine has a plugin that makes people vote Republican. If it wasn’t for that, we’d all be braindead libs living in a socialist paradise.

The Democrats would first have to convince somebody that they believe in any kind of justice.

What makes people vote Republican? Why in particular do working class and rural Americans usually vote for pro-business Republicans when their economic interests would seem better served by Democratic policies?

Exacly how does a psychologist know that DemocRAT economic policies would better serve the economic interest of working class and rural Americans who vote Republican? Jimmy Carter's economic policies certainly didn't help them.

To support his model, Haidt has devised a number of ingenious experiments. He presents scenarios designed to evoke strong moral responses (“it’s wrong!”) but ones that are hard to justify rationally. (Examples include: having sex with a chicken carcass you’re about to eat, wiping your toilet with a national flag, and, as we’ll see, brother/sister incest.) Although the goals of these experiments vary, the results all point to the causal importance of emotions and intuitions in our moral life, and to different roles for reason from the ones we might expect or hope for. Haidt’s model has gone against some dominant trends in moral and social psychology, in particular the theories of well-known psychologists Piaget and Kohlberg, whose work appeared to support rationalist models of moral judgment (where reason plays the primary causal role in moral decision-making). But as Haidt himself notes, his own work can be placed within a grand tradition of psychology and philosophy—a return to an emphasis on the emotions which began in full force with the theories of the Scottish philosopher David Hume.

This idiot comes to exactly the wrong conclusions, he sees Dems as seeing society as a collection of individuals with rights - exactly the opposite of what the Dems believe that every thing is a “community” to be organized to trample on individual liberty.
