The standoff between UC Berkeley and four tree-sitters outside Memorial Stadium intensified Monday as work crews prepared to remove the protesters from a stripped-down redwood.
Workers used bulldozers to clear and level the ground surrounding the redwood, one of two trees standing in the center of the grove after crews cut down 40 other trees over the weekend to make way for a $124 million sports training center.
"The university is preparing for what will we hope be a quick and safe extraction in the coming days," campus spokesman Dan Mogulof said. "We had hoped it wouldn't come to this. It's extremely unfortunate."
Mogulof did not say exactly when or how the university would act to remove the tree-sitters.
The protest began more than 21 months ago, on Dec. 1, 2006.
Last week, a state appeals court declined to block the university's construction plans after an Alameda County judge ruled against stadium neighbors, tree advocates and the city of Berkeley, who said UC had not adequately addressed the impact of the project.
Negotiations aimed at getting the sitters to come down on their own broke down Sunday night, and the university cut off the protesters' food and water supply at 9 a.m. Monday.
The tree-sitters have about a day's worth of food left, said Mogulof and Eric Eisenberg, a protest leader.
"We're holding our ground," Eisenberg said. "But these are human beings. They deserve food and water."

Sure, they deserve water. I’d suggest a fire hose.
The authorities look like fools having tolerated these morons for so long. I agree- blast them out. They should have done it sooner.
Uh-huh.
Well then, Eric, you can buy them some food and water.
And they can come pick it up across the street from the tree.
May I suggest something in a Stihl or maybe a Husquvarna?
shoot ‘em down...a pellet rifle would be effective and good for laughs.
I don’t feel sorry for Berkley one bit. They have fostered this protest mentality and now the chickens have come home to roost.
Had this been on private property that was next to the campus, Berkley’s professors and administration would have cheering the protesters on.
More victims. If they deserve it, let them go get it themselves.
If Berkeley had ring-barked the tree a year ago, they wouldn’t have a protester in it today.
Remove the bark all around the tree a foot in height three feet above the ground. Watch tree die. Watch protestor tire of perching in dead tree.
Same result, less fuss. But this is Berkeley — libs don’t have the imagination to do something like that.
ehhh... good idea sir, save for one flaw. I don’t think anyone would want to work on the tree while being bombarded with buckets of feces and urine which seems to be the hippies main weapon.
1) Bring in large safety net and position underneath sitters
2) Convince them to come down by jumping into net
3) As soon as they jump, pull the net
4) Prepare for hilarity
May I suggest something in a Stihl or maybe a Husquvarna?
a Poulan, please!
Hey, it’s fenced in, and I happen to have a beaver problem in my lake.
I think I can find a solution that would leave the hippies very confused and distraught, a dead tree or a starving beaver...
Johnsered, best saw on the market.
This machine that looks like a giant backhoe clamps around the trunk, then shakes the shit out of the tree (again, no pun intended).
They need to hook one up to this tree and leave it on for a while.
Quick! Get them on the ground as quickly as possible. THUMP! THUMP!
