Bypassing public financing may not be paying off for Obama
Dallas Morning News ^ | 9/8/2008

After months of record-breaking fundraising, a new sense of urgency in Barack Obama’s fundraising team is palpable as the full weight of the campaign’s decision to bypass public financing for the general election is suddenly upon them. (snip)

The signs of concern have become evident in recent weeks as early fundraising totals have suggested Mr. Obama’s decision to bypass public financing may not necessarily afford him the commanding financing advantage over John McCain that many had originally predicted.

(snip)

Meanwhile, the Obama campaign had calculated that with its vaunted fundraising machine, driven by both small contributors over the Internet and a powerful high-dollar donor network, it made more sense to forego public financing so it could raise and spend unlimited sums.

But the campaign is struggling to meet ambitious fundraising goals it set for the campaign and the party. It collected in June and July far less from Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton’s donors than originally projected. Moreover, Mr. McCain, unlike Mr. Obama, will have the luxury of concentrating almost entirely on campaigning instead of raising money, as Mr. Obama must do.

The Obama campaign does not have to report its August fundraising totals until next week, so it is difficult to tally what it has in the bank at this point. A spokesman also said that August was its best fundraising month yet and that the campaign’s fundraising was on track. It finished July with slightly less cash on hand with the Democratic National Committee compared with Mr. McCain and the RNC. The Obama campaign has also been spending heavily, including several million more than the McCain campaign in advertising in August.

But what about that vaunted $10M (or was that $1M) that was raised after the announcement of Palin?

Did the Obama campaign make good on paying off something like $10 Million of Hilary's debt?

Biden spent it on copies of Debating for Dummies and How to Be A Man lessons from Naomi Wolf.

"Mr. McCain is barred from raising any more money for his own campaign coffers but can lean on money raised by the Republican National Committee, which has continued to exceed expectations."

Not exact numbers, but it sounds like they're kicking some butt in that department!

Mark my words again. Someday we will discover the big hitters for the Rats used the internet to launder donations and made it look like it was done by small contributors.

O’ had to outspend Hillary over two to one to beat her even marginally. So they may need twice as much as McCain to even be competitive.

He was also seen at various liquor stores along the campaign trail.

I don't think that will happen.

In the campaign, it is how you spend the money not necessarily how much you raise.

Both O'Bama and Hillary have spent money like drunken sailors in their protracted fight for the nomination, e.g. $750.00 per night rooms at the Borgata.

McCain has been much more frugal and basically rested on his oars all summer. He has a lot of money, and Palin will get him a lot more.

No, he did not.

Here is what I have been able to piece together but other posters may have better info:

Hillary has a total debt of about $28 million.
About $10 - $11 million of that is money she loaned to the campaign from her own funds.

Since the end of her campaign the Obama campaign has helped her with one or two fund raisers which netted about only about $500,000.
So, she still owes others about $18 million MOL and is out $10 million MOL herself.

Now he wants her to help him beat back Sarah Palin but she is P.O.'d about the money.

LOL!

I bet they will rue the day when they decided to spend $5 million on Obama-1 757.

I have suspected this also.

That's what I thought might be happening, and why I asked the question. Thanks.
