Obama to Palin: 'Don't Mock the Constitution'

By Peter Slevin

FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich. -- Sen. Barack Obama delivered an impassioned defense of the Constitution and the rights of terrorism suspects tonight, striking back at one of the biggest applause lines in Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin's speech to the GOP convention.

It was in St. Paul last week that Palin drew raucous cheers when she delivered this put-down of Obama: "Al-Qaeda terrorists still plot to inflict catastrophic harm on America and he's worried that someone won't read them their rights."

Obama had a few problems with that.

Obama is rattled because he got so used to fawning media treatment he thought he could coast the rest of the way. Palin’s speech was thoroughly humiliating to him because there was no way to respond to the basic charge — that he hasn’t done a whole hell of alot beyond being slick-talking careerist. Hillary spent her whole campaign harping on his inexperience but didn’t have the stones or the communication skill to lay into him like Palin. And 38 million people saw it live.

A favorite lib cliche is that "patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel." Of course, that old chestnut happens to be true when someone like Barack Obama starts waving the flag and pretending to stand up for American institutions.

"Al-Qaeda terrorists still plot to inflict catastrophic harm on America and he's worried that someone won't read them their rights."

Damn, that's a great line. And a true one. Go Sarah!

There are 2 types of legal systems in the country; Civil-Law, which is consists of our written codes and constitution and their scholarly interpretations; and Common-Law, which which is derived from the English common law system, the long history of court decisions based in the principle of stare decisis.

He’s talking about the US constitution, which is Civil-Law, and then he refers to Anglo-saxon tradition, which would be Common-Law. Our constitution definitely does not derive from previous court cases.

Sounds like ol Barry has been taking a few hits from the crack pipe again, if he can’t even get this straight. You would think a “legal scholar” could get this straight, but what do you expect from this teleprompter reading dummy?

Yup, he’s a front-runner who believed his own hype (cue Public Enemy, “don’t believe the hype”) once a front-runner horse is passed he loses it, I can smell the fear from here.

Obama needs to explain how U.S. constitutional rights apply to foreign terrorists. He’s a lawyer, isn’t he?

Ba-crock mocks the 1st Amendment, the 2nd Amendment, the 4th Amendment, and the 10th Amendment.

So shut the hell up.

It’s not clear that he understands habeas corpus. It doesn’t have to do with grabbing the wrong guy. It has to do with grabbing and holding the right guy but without charging him with a crime. That’s very serious stuff, which is why the Constitution says you can’t do it except in times of rebellion or invasion. He’s a constitutional lawyer, he says.

Talk about out of touch. These morons don’t realize that she gets big cheers for these lines because she is saying what evryone is thinking but won’t say for fear of being shouted down by pc morons.

She’s connecting because we finally see one of us standing there saying what we know to be true.

Of all the things his campaign picks out to target Palin on it's terrorist rights? That is not a big vote getter. What sort of campaign strategist picks this out in the daily meeting to focus on? Did he gain a single vote off this argument?

Panic has set in at camp Obama. They are obsessed with Palin and have convinced themselves that she is the key to winning this race. The inadequate Obama, desperately attempting to refute the public disrobing he took at her hands is now scrambling to dazzle us with his credentials.

At first he tried to resuscitate the noble "community organizer" role. That didn't play so well since he still wasn't able to point to any actual responsibilities the job demanded or achievements he had made. After wearing that effort out over the course of a few days he's moved on to the next specious qualification on his sparse resume: constitutional lawyer extraordinaire. Surely, he thinks, Palin can't compare any of her experiences to this! Then he goes on to make a fool of himself on the subject and Palin doesn't need to lift a finger. All his muddy clarification does is confirm the charge she leveled at him all the while conjuring up imagery of Barack as a bomb thrower.

In his next attempt to establish his bone fides he'll go back to the drawing board and grace us all with another predictable speech attempting to promote the notion that Mario Cuomo put forth, "he is a new kind of intelligence". Afterall, only those who are either too stupid or not worthy could not see this!

Unfortunately for him, this shtick is wearing thin and it is becoming painfully obvious that the only thing he ever had to offer was a fresh face, and that has now been trumped by a fresher face with real credentials with real accomplishments.

It's dead man walking for this pretend emperor. Both he and the facts are now laid bare for all to see.

“Panic has set in at camp Obama. They are obsessed with Palin and have convinced themselves that she is the key to winning this race.”

Remember...
You are dealing with an INCREDIBLY huge Ego here, and Obama has never won a contested election. His last two campaigns were won by digging dirt on his opponents.

I think the ego thing is really what’s at play here... this hard...

They have no rights under the Constitution because they foreign COMBATANTS without a uniform with the intent of infiltration, spying, sabotage, assassination, and mass murder. It is perfectly legal under the laws of war and the Geneva Convention and the U.S. Constitution to kill them at the scene.

Is this doofus running for VP or Prez...

I wanna see a cartoon with McCain alone at the Presidential Debate and Palin, Biden and Obama at the VP debate (maybe Couric, Brokaw, too).

This is hilarious, or would be if it wasn’t also so serious. “Don’t Mock the Constitution”, from a guy who never passed up an opportunity to infringe on the right of the people protected by the Second Amendment to that very same Constitution.

good post — and I notice that Palin’s words seem to have been very artfully planned to provoke Obama and/or Biden into attacking them until Palin & McCain can pull the rug out from under....

On terrorist rights (sounds like Obambi wants to give them Miranda rights even if captured on a battlefield abroad???), on Fannie Mae scandal, on “Bridge to Nowhere” and also the jet “I put it on Ebay” etc.

A number of Gov. Palin’s remarks provoke these vehement responses and yet there’s really no adequate basis for the Obama response, not AT ALL. I wonder if these are conscious traps for Obama or he’s just so hot and bothered that he cannot help himself?

There will be some good attack ads, especially on Obama so fervent about terrorist “rights” under our Constitution.

Hmmm.

Biden campaigns in a diner in his "home state" of Pennsylvania and now Olbermama is in a high school gym.

Next campaign stop....
