BERKELEY: Last stand for tree-sitters as 40 of 42 trees cut down

UC Berkeley officials warned today that "the clock is ticking" for four tree-sitters perched in a redwood tree outside Memorial Stadium.

University police and other campus leaders spent much of the day talking with the remaining members of a 21-month protest over plans to cut down a grove of trees to make way for a $124 million athletic training center.

The talks went on as logging crews worked with chainsaws and heavy machinery to clear the trees that were cut down Friday, Saturday and today, after a state appeals court rejected requests to delay construction.

By this evening, 40 of the 42 trees in the grove were cut down and gone. All that remained were two redwood trees - one that will be transplanted and the occupied redwood, which already has been stripped of all but its topmost branches. An acacia tree was cut down and removed tonight.

"We're going to continue to talk to the people in the trees until we think there is no chance of a voluntary climb-down," said Dan Mogulof, a university spokesman. "But the clock is ticking."

On Friday, the university gave the protesters 72-hours' notice that they were ending the agreement that allowed the tree-sitters to receive food, water and other support from their backers on the ground, although the university declined to say whether the end of that period, at 9 a.m. Monday, was a deadline for settlement of the continuing standoff.

"The agreement ends at 9 a.m. Monday," Mogulof said today. "What happens at 9:01 has yet to be determined."

University officials believed they had an agreement for the tree-sitters to climb down today and participate in a ceremony of remembrance for a 200-year-old coast live oak, dubbed "Grandma" by the protesters, that was felled to make way for the new construction...

I wonder how many cherry pickers they will have to use to harvest these 4 nuts?

I don’t think these idiots realize the danger they pose to others if something goes awry.

I wonder what the Carbon Footprint has cost the city in time & resources trying to get primates out of a tree.

If Clint Eastwood was mayor, he'd show up at 9:01am with nothing but an axe and a sneer.

Probably about the same number. They have to be bilinguals, though, and able to climb up and carry one down easily.

These two excerpts are from June 2008...

"At least one tree sitter on Tuesday began throwing bags of human waste on the approaching arborists."

BERKELEY, Calif. (KCBS) -- One woman was arrested Tuesday as authorities removed some of the structures that have housed tree sitting protesters in an oak grove UC Berkeley wants to cut down to make way for a $125 million athletic facility.

The protester was taken into custody after she reportedly bit one of the workers removing her supplies, according to police. Officers cordoned off part of Piedmont Avenue near Memorial Grove and brought in arborists to remove the platforms and gear the tree sitters have used to maintain their perches since December 2006. A university official had earlier said the tree sitters themselves would not be removed yet.

“One of the things we’re most concerned about is safety and security, of our police officers and the people in the trees. That’s the reason we’re not forcibly removing people from the trees today,” said Dan Mogulof, a spokesman for UC Berkeley.

Tuesday was not the first time the university has removed scaffolding built by the protesters, but removing the people has proven more difficult. One witness told KCBS reporter Tim Ryan at the scene that some of the tree sitters threw urine they had collected in buckets at the police and arborists to discourage them from climbing.
