When the news came out earlier this week that the family situation of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin is a little more complicated than had originally been disclosed, pundits immediately began speculating whether social conservatives -- not least, evangelicals -- would stick with their woman. Surely a person who allowed her 17-year-old daughter to get pregnant while she was off running a state could not be the type of mother and female politician that conservatives go for. The Daily Kos was filled with sarcastic remarks about the hypocrisy of the "family values" crowd. A poster to Slate noted: "I have been absolutely amazed at how quickly the Evangelicals abandoned some of their 'family values.' . . . What about stay-at-home motherhood?: Palin's candidacy is a direct assault on that Christian tradition." Daily Telegraph columnist Liz Hunt sneered: "Whose family values is she enthusiastic about? How can she reconcile such a high-profile job as 'veep' -- a 'heartbeat' away from leadership of the free world and all that -- with bringing up five children?"...
Most American evangelicals have wholeheartedly embraced the idea of women in the workplace. A Pew survey released this summer, for instance, asked whether "women should return to their traditional roles in society." Twenty-two percent of all Americans agreed, compared with 32% of white born-again Protestants. That's not exactly a big difference. And younger evangelicals are even more likely to agree that women should have the opportunity to work outside the home.

As Governor Palin comforts her 5 month old son Trig, the media asks where were the Governor and her husband when their 5 month pregnant daughter was visiting her fiance. The media continues to work on their calculators and calendars.
Palinism?
I guess the old saying of “You can lead a horse to water but you can’t make it drink” was supposed to be for city slickers to understand animal husbandry.
They totally lack any understanding that “evangelicals” know we are all imperfect but strive to be so with the knowledge that the weakness of the flesh is a lifelong battle. I guess the concept of “Hate the Sin but love the Sinner” is also something they missed while studying Christianity on the History Channel.

So far, the pundits are still batting 1.000.
They haven't been right about anything yet....
I enjoy being a homemaker. I do get a little “thrill” out of a sparkly window and a shiny kitchen sink. I love canning, decorating and sewing.
(I must confess; I do hate laundry!)
But I've never been so full of myself to think that what I have is every woman's bliss or even a possibility. I know that I'm lucky in love and having a steady, supportive partner has made this all possible.
The *only* time I've been critical of working mothers is in one particular situation: Both parents work hard, long hours, she doesn't *have* to work for financial reasons, AND one or more children are not thriving. When your children aren't doing well, *someone* has to give them the time, energy, thoughtfulness and devotion that they need.
But that doesn't have to be Mom.
My husband isn't a cuddly, nurturing dad. He just isn't. When the kids scrape their knee his reply is, “rub some dirt on it.” When my son is upset he says, “Get off your period, Nancy.” (Which, surprisingly, makes my son crack up and improves his mood.)
I don't think this is a bad thing. The kids have the softness of mom when they need it, but dad puts things in perspective. With this team we've managed to produce compassionate, loving teens, full of humor, who aren't afraid to get hurt and who can shrug off an insult.
But who dictated that our family roles have to be the standard for every family in America? I know I didn't.
Palin’s kids aren't being shuffled off to daycare and tucked in by a nanny. Right now they have a loving, full-time dad. They have the attention of one parent and that's exactly what children need.
I didn't throw my values under the bus when I chose to support Palin. She *reinforces* my values.
Gee, I didn't know that we were supposed to stay home and hide in our burka's. Wow! Just Wow! I was aloud off my chain and out of the house to work.
Bloggers on KOS, Obamadon being one of them, are out of touch with mainstream America. Obamadon, the liar of Ramadan
Very well put!
Yes, Sarah has really scared the Sh!t out of the kooks and cretins!!! They just don't know how to cope with real people. Screw'em!!!
Now Palin has allowed her daughter to get pregnant?? Was she along on the date?
I thought God made women with smaller hands so they could clean drinking glasses easier.
Stay home in Burqhas?
Says who? I love the fact that Sarah Palin is “much woman” meaning her ability to handle situations inspires even ol’ cynical me.
Shoot a Elk, dress it, qtr it, then serve it for supper with 5 children and run Alaska as well?
That is impressive, to me that is a difficult Women to understand, time for her must be grains in the hourglass small...
Liberal logic: Sarah ordered her daughter to have sex and get pregnant to punish her
Hillary would have been a small down lawyer if it's hadn't been for her marriage. She got there the old fashioned way - femine wiles ...
Dem women make it on their husbands backs - - -Republican women make it on their own.
Is “Rick’s place” a bar in a science fiction story?
Thanks for sharing. I have no children of my own but I can certainly tell that you are a great mom. Sounds like you are married to a great guy and that together you have given your children the love and attention they need. :)
Well said, Marie. Todd seems completely capable of being a stay-at-home dad. We’ve heard precious little about that in the media discussion.
Other than locking her up in a tower like Rapunzel or giving express permission (cupcake, why don't you go out tonight and get pregnant) how could she control what a 17-year old does? One other thing that the media seems to be missing, although Obama himself mentioned it, is that Ann Dunham (BO's mother) got pregnant at 17. Why aren't they harping on him?
Because...
