Hurricane Ike is the fifth tropical cyclone of the 2008 hurricane season to threaten U.S. Gulf Coast states.
Reports from Turks & Caicos Islands describe 80 per cent of homes damaged or destroyed. On Sunday, Hurricane Ike's position just north of Hispanola was hampering relief efforts for devastation incurred by Hurricane Gustav and Tropical Storm Fay. The death toll in Haiti from Gustav reached 200 people.
Florida Governor Charlie Crist held a press conference Sunday morning shortly after a Hurricane Watch was issued for the Florida Keys.

I read somewhere yesterday that Governor Jindal released 200-300 buses to Texas for evacuations.
They called a voluntary evacuation for Brazoria county this morning. The mayor of Galveston will announce their plans in about 30 minutes.
lol. I guess that’s possible. We’ve gone to a hurricane evacuation watch instead of a warning now though.
>predicting a tropical storm in Austin and the Texas Hill Country on Saturday, which should take care of the drought.<
Local news says Austin officials are expecting thousands of folks to evacuate up from South Texas. They’re getting shelters & food ready.
Strong winds, heavy rain forecast. AND there’s a University of Texas football game scheduled Saturday as well. Could be a hairy weekend.
Galveston’s mayor was emphatic yesterday that should an evacuation be necessary the citizens “in” Galveston would be the first to leave using the zip code method. Galveston is taking this seriously but I have concerns about Houston.
Can’t we just move the game to Arkansas?
How will they enforce that though?
Mandatory evacuation called for zip code 77541, which is the Freeport area of Brazoria county.
Houston except for the Clear Lake area should be OK. And the Mayor of Galveston is right the roads out should be kept clear for Gaveston to evacuate. Then if need be the Galveston Bay area (me). lol
Good thing the Cowboys-Iggles game is on Monday Night.
77541, hmmm, I’m 77539.
I’ve only been through one mandatory evacuation and that was Rita. There was no enforcement that I know of. Folks who stayed behind had no issues with law enforcement.
Yeah but around here, even on a good day people don’t follow driving rules. Just wondering how LE will be able to force this.
That's nearly close enough for government work.
IIRC you’re in San Leon. So far there has been no evacuation called for your area. We should know more about that in about 20 minutes. I’m in Seabrook just down the coast from you.
We all better hope that Ike comes no where near here though. I was reading last night that BP says business as usual but Feds are saying if a manditory then no checks. I can understand the humarian side of it but what an opportunity for bad guys.
There’s no possible way to enforce this. They’re banking on the good neighbor policy.
That my I am so active on these GOM hurricane threads.
