Hurricane Ike is the fifth tropical cyclone of the 2008 hurricane season to threaten U.S. Gulf Coast states.
Reports from Turks & Caicos Islands describe 80 per cent of homes damaged or destroyed. On Sunday, Hurricane Ike's position just north of Hispanola was hampering relief efforts for devastation incurred by Hurricane Gustav and Tropical Storm Fay. The death toll in Haiti from Gustav reached 200 people.
Florida Governor Charlie Crist held a press conference Sunday morning shortly after a Hurricane Watch was issued for the Florida Keys.

He's late ... they must be working his opinion .... the Muslim who calls women pigs LOL
No matter what he says he's lost an entire news cycle and people have already formed their opinions
.
Gotcha.
We just got our electricity back on Saturday evening after 4 days thanks to Gustav winds and 13+ inches of rain here in central Arkansas. If Ike hangs a sharp right like predicted, we could be in for bigger trouble with flooding and downed trees since the ground is still saturated. Who’da thought we’d have to start making hurricane preparations here in the Ouachita Mountains? Oy!
Except they don't always turn north. The worst ones (Galveston 1900, Carla, Celia) didn't.
****trail of breadcrumbs****
Same with you & the Mrs.
In the next day or so I may be saying the same thing to you.
Just gotta wait to see where this guy wants to land.
Also, Dog Gone and Kim Jong Il appear to have 'disappeared' the same day. A coincidence?
My brother & his wife live in Angleton ~ I have not heard from them yet regarding evacuations.
My mother & sister live in Jones Creek ~ they are preparing to evacuate tomorrow, if the storm is still headed their way.
It will almost surely hit TX......just a question of here.
Here in West TX though, probably won’t get any rain from this unless it manages to get bigger than it already is..it is big.
ROFL--just got off the phone with the Obama campaign. They call me every 1-2 weeks to get my opinion. I don't know how this happened. Anyway, for the past two weeks, I have told them how excited I am about Sarah Palin. Today, I went on about the old and tired Obama claims that McCain is four more years of Bush. She brought up the foolish "Palin doesn't have experience," and I described the daily responsibilities of governing a state with two borders (especially Russia) with flyovers and vessels.
After we discussed health care and the overall differences between Hillary and Sarah, the caller was very defeated and depressed. Cheers!
Coffee...all...over...keyboard.
Thanks much for checking in. Glad to have you back with us!
I noted that dry air last night as Ike emerged into the GOM. Since then, Ike has slowed its forward motion, prolonging the Cuba land influence. The core and its surrounding circulation has cleared Cuba. Just a matter of time now before it wrings the dry air out. Then watch out.
You are in West Texas now?
Just moved from KS with my wife to Midland. She grew up in Abilene, so she is happy to be closer to the family. I miss KS some though. :) Like TX, however.
Winds 90 mph, 957 mb. Moving WNW at 8 mph.

200 miles is a long way
I seem to remember that Rita was poised to hit north of Corpus as well and it went 200 miles north.
We just wont know for a while.
NN, the local weather boards here in Houston are very concerned that the NHC is way south of where it needs to be and that evacs in the Houston/Galveston area won’t be made in time. I’m not sure if the EOM’s are trying to avoid another Rita type of scenario, but I have to agree that I think the gov’t officials seem to be slow on the uptake.
BTW, what does it take to get this in Breaking News?
