Hurricane Ike Live Thread
NOAA/NHC ^ | 7 September 2008 | NOAA/NHC

Hurricane Ike is the fifth tropical cyclone of the 2008 hurricane season to threaten U.S. Gulf Coast states.

Reports from Turks & Caicos Islands describe 80 per cent of homes damaged or destroyed. On Sunday, Hurricane Ike's position just north of Hispanola was hampering relief efforts for devastation incurred by Hurricane Gustav and Tropical Storm Fay. The death toll in Haiti from Gustav reached 200 people.

Florida Governor Charlie Crist held a press conference Sunday morning shortly after a Hurricane Watch was issued for the Florida Keys.

Welcome to FR. Congratulations for your marriage. Listen to your local emergency management alerts. Outlook doesn’t look particularly good for an outdoor wedding. Ike is a big storm.

Sorry about that. I hope it fizzles, but I think I'd get ready anywhere on the Gulf coast. I don't know what is going to slow it down.

Stay safe, Eastforker!

Luckily wedding is indoors, as is the reception. Late in the evening though, 6:30PM. I have family flying in from Nevada and Minnesota. About a week ago, when this thing was forecast to hit Florida... I joked with my Father, I bet this thing makes its way into the GOM and becomes a surprise guest at the wedding, now....

Oh, well, it is the 13th... I had originally pressed for October 11th date, but the fiancee had to have it at a specific place, and only date avail was the 13th of September.

I am looking forward to this weekend, no doubt. Looks like it’ll be a memorable event.

I remember that blizzard like yesterday. My daughter was born the evening before it started, and I couldn’t get to the hospital until 3 days later.

You'll have lots of stories to tell your children and grandchildren.

fyi--our family had a wedding in the middle of a hurricane evacuation 10 years ago. The bride and groom had three contingency plans, including a semi-elopement to Orlando if the storm was going to be a direct hit. The rehearsal dinner was a bit wet Friday night, but the storm veered away Saturday, and everything went well.

But you may still get some rain and winds.

I know we got some wind from Hurricane Goose-Step
(Gustav) when it passed through Texas recently.
