Hurricane Ike Live Thread
NOAA/NHC ^ | 7 September 2008 | NOAA/NHC

Posted on 09/07/2008 8:37:37 AM PDT by NautiNurse

Hurricane Ike is the fifth tropical cyclone of the 2008 hurricane season to threaten U.S. Gulf Coast states.

Reports from Turks & Caicos Islands describe 80 per cent of homes damaged or destroyed. On Sunday, Hurricane Ike's position just north of Hispanola was hampering relief efforts for devastation incurred by Hurricane Gustav and Tropical Storm Fay. The death toll in Haiti from Gustav reached 200 people.

Florida Governor Charlie Crist held a press conference Sunday morning shortly after a Hurricane Watch was issued for the Florida Keys.

Guy named Genarro, I think from Monroe
County, speaking about the Keys, just
on my local news saying “we missed a bullet.”

Hope the winds aren’t causing bad problems for
you. Damm .. I hate that wind. Looks like tomorrow
may be a much brighter day for you. Good luck, and
God bless.

Thank you for the prayers, they are always appreciated.

Preparation is the key. Hurricane season starts in June, every year, same time and that is when you prepare. All I really have to do is board up, everything else is pretty much ready.

Thanks.

Some of us grew up on the coast and understand it’s a fact of life living here.

Hell, Carnival should have livened up their trip by sailing through the outer bands of the storm. I’ve been there and done that and trust you me, It would be a vacation they would never forget!

I was noticing that the HP system has seemed to move a bit west. Along the coast of Mexico/Texas there is a system rotating clockwise, indicative of high pressure. Ike will probably slide a little north off of that if it (hp) stays organized.

Good night all. Global warming has graced us with 49 degrees in Illinois. Saw my breath for the first time this summer.

Everybody stay safe

LOL

Hey I’ve mellowed a lot, but have been threatened with my life if I take the grandson surfing during a storm.

If you live on the coast there is always that but :’).
I was supposed to go to my moms tonight. I figure I better stick around here though.

Hi, gal....yep, I'm still here getting all the dirt on Obama from those familiar with his community organizer days. I should be back in about two weeks or so....and hoping I'm in time for some first-class freeping, especially when Sarah Hurricuda blows into town. I know she'll come to the Tampa Bay area at some time or other.

The McCain/Palin ticket will sweep Florida like a tidal wave on steroids.

In TX we’re so fascinated by seeing our breath in cold air, we try to blow smoke rings with it!

If you’re going, go quick!

Wife’s aunt was supposed to come down from Bryan. She called and said she wasn’t coming because we had a storm down here.

I agree with you. I have a bit of a story to tell. I went to the store to get a generator today. I’ve never felt moved to do this before even durning rita. Boarded the house but no generator. okay so i got to the store and they oh no we don’t have any...so this little kid pokes his head out from behind the register and says oh someone just returned on 10 minutes ago. So i go to the return desk and the lady says oh its sold but i dont know where the customer went. So we waited and some other guy said oh the lady left. So here is my generator sitting here. The only one in the area...and it was mine. I really felt like i was suppose to get this thing and i really think everything fell right in line. It was a real God Moment for the beleivers amoung us. It took 4 happenstances for me to get the last generator in NE harris county. Plus its 2 times bigger which means i can help my parents. So it was really weird this happened and i too think its going to turn back to the north. I just do. I have a bad feeling. And had a Generator land in my lap.

I live in far NE Harris county myself. We lost power for 4 days during Rita. Our generator powered the window unit, computers and TV, fridg and freezer and a couple lights. Also the wifes oxygen machine. Those generators are life savers. How big of one did you get?

It’s rocking here on Sugarloaf Key, 17 miles up from Key West. That band that just finished going through was a doozie. Key West Nexrad doppler radar was clocking 84 knots on individual cells flying by here. Surprised the electric is still on. I did not expect to see quite this much wind.
