Republican John McCain pledged if elected president to appoint Democrats to his Cabinet, saying there's nothing partisan about tackling the nation's toughest problems.
"I don't know how many, but I can tell you, with all due respect to previous administrations, it is not going to be a single ... 'Well we have a Democrat now.' It's going to be the best people in America," the GOP presidential nominee told CBS' "Face the Nation," in an interview taped Saturday that will be broadcast in full Sunday.
"So many of these problems we face _ for example, energy independence, what's partisan about that?" he said. "And I'll tell you, some of them, I'll ask to work for a dollar a year."
McCain's comments come after he was believed to have closely considered Connecticut Sen. Joe Lieberman, a former Democrat turned independent, as a possible running mate before ultimately choosing Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, a Republican.

Links? I would like to see it. Also, which of the two is naive enough to think someone from the other side will actually go along with him in their beliefs?
McCain trying to lock in the independent vote and maybe pull along some MOR Dems. Probably a smart thing for him to signal at this point.
But look which priority he put first. “Energy Independence”. We have been hearing this a lot these last couple of days. This angle must be playing well, as well it should. Less dependence on foreign energy sources is key to our economic security as well as national security. Another advantage Palin brings to the ticket.
And as it turns out, the energy independence argument is his best line of defense against Dems who blame the Republicans for the economic problems.
Why not trust the ‘rats to haul his trash while he’s at it? They are so trustworthy after all... /s I much prefer the Reagan approach. When he needed a doctor he tried to make sure he was getting a Republican.
By putting America first and party politics second?
Whether you like it or not, more Americans are Democrat than Republican.
The current far-Left Democrat Party is leaving millions of American Democrats to the right of them and you see no value in welcoming those Reagan Democrats to our side. All you seem to care about is whether or not an American has a (D) or an (R) after their name.
Why? Because he made a speech at the convention? Because he “supports” our war against global terrorism?
Every American should support our war against terrorism, so Joe should get a special dispensation for doing what any American politician should be doing?
If there are loyal conservatives/republicans who are vastly more qualified for cabinet positions, why would you put in a psudo-dem. Plus you would take away an (I) from Conn. and the libs in Conn. would just appoint another (D) for the Senate.
Hmmm. If Lieberman goes to the cabinet, the Republican governor of Connecticut can appoint his replacement in the Senate.
Why? Why pledge such an absurdity? What is to be gained by it?
It is so imperative that we pick up some seats in the Congress this time around.
Unfreakingbelievable - just when he has his party reved up and ready to vote for him - he opens his stupid mouth and puts his foot in it.
Note for McLame: Dont talk about how you love democrats more than conservatives. Dont talk about how you hate the hard working American and love the Mexican Illegal Alien. Dont talk about how you sat on your hands and said nothing when you voted in the affirmative for the most liberal SCOTUS Ruth Bader Ginsberg.
This is McLames election to lose - and Ill be damned if he hasnt started to lose it.
One more question, how often to dems state they will put Republicans on thier cabnet?
The enemy is within, liberals pose more of a threat to America than AlQueda.
Remember bipartisan is when RINO’s surrender alleged principals.
I bet that CBS put this out just to target conservatives concerned about McCain.
I know...let's all run around at mach 4 with our hair on fire, screaming "I knew it, I knew it!!". That's always helpful.
“Have no fear the McCain worshippers will be along to inform you that theyve seen the light and the light is McCain.”
I know. I feel like I’m in the movie Invasion of the Body Snatchers and I’m the last hold out.
I’m afraid the McCain-Pods are going to “get me” when I go to bed at night.
He should appoint Democrats Senators from states with Republican governors.
Good...then I hope he appoints Dodd to some useless position too!
Still an idiot.
oops principals be principles, more coffee.
Teddy Kennedy for Ambassador to Lynchburg, TN.
This is the exact danger I predicted with McCain. Pure partisans are dumb sheep and they happily go along with everything their shepherd wants.
Right now, and for the next two months, the negativity must end. An Obama presidency must be prevented. There will be plenty of time after that to complain about McCain's policies. In fact, I look forward with enthusiasm to spending the next four years complaining about the McCain administration. But not now.
