GOP tests out renewing U.S. 'culture wars'
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | 9/6/8 | Joe Garofoli

Now that much of America is starting to pay closer attention to the presidential campaign -and with the race a virtual tie - Republicans have intensified their strategy to corral the undecided stragglers: reignite the culture wars.

This version won't be as explicit as conservative Pat Buchanan's 1992 GOP convention call for a "cultural war" or even the 2004 race, where anti-gay marriage referendums drove cultural conservatives to the polls in 11 mostly swing states. Instead, this battle will be fought under the cloak of the candidates' personal biographies. Using the GOP paintbrush, the race pits the "ex-POW war hero" and the "hockey mom" versus the Ivy League elitist and the career senator.

Their battlefield: small towns versus big cities; talk radio versus mainstream media and the liberal blogs; heartland versus "Eastern elites."

"It is going to be fought in cities with populations between 50,000 and 100,000 residents," said veteran GOP pollster Frank Luntz. In battleground states like Michigan and Ohio, "instead of going to Detroit and Cleveland, you're going to see them a lot more in the small towns."

The GOP is crafting its narrative in the language of a sort of reverse snobbery. On Thursday, Rep. Lynn Westmoreland, R-Ga., called the Obamas - who were both educated at Ivy League schools - "members of an elitist class that thinks they're uppity." Though Westmoreland, a white Republican who represents the Atlanta suburbs, said he didn't mean it in a racial sense, the term has its roots in the pre-Civil War South to describe blacks who spoke up for themselves.

Viewers saw the culture-war strategy blossom during last week's GOP convention, as the Republicans rallied around Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin,

...When ...Rudy Giuliani sneered as he mocked Sen. Barack Obama's post-college job as a "community organizer,"

It’s all about Walmart. Republicans shop there. Democrats want to close them down.

The “culture war” is going to be small town gun-clingers vs. well-oiled big city hustlers.

"Reignite" the culture wars??

When did the scumbag Democrats ever stop, for even one minute, belittling traditional American families and mocking their values? "Reignite"? I'm sure this pantload, Joe Garofoli, feels right at home in San Fransicko.

Well, dang, it's kind of hard to ignore when a candidate demeans every small town inhabitant in America. McCain didn't ask Obama to say what he did about me and all my ancestors.

We have every political reason to Rally to Palin! This election.

When Obama has to tell workers at a PA glass factory that he won’t take their guns, and even if he wanted to, he did not have the votes in Congress to do it, that speaks volumes about what Middle America is facing this election.

Its a battle between small town America in the heartland and big city liberal elites on the coasts.

As long as that remains the battle, we win. Big time.

That is the reason Obambi is trying so frantically to re-frame the election as a referendum on President Bush.

The problem is, only his own base is likely to believe the argument that McCain and Palin are clones of Bush. Obama is not out of it by any means, but that is quite a dilemma he is facing.

Look for his campaign to get even nastier in the days and weeks ahead.

Race's undeniable truth..

Without one iota of doubt if the black candidate was conservative he'd be catching hell from the Mau-Mauing Media just as Gov. Palin is the target of ceaseless calumny.

Walking on eggs is mandated only if the black man or the woman is a liberal.

Race's undeniable truth addendum..

With this MSM a.k.a. Mau-Mauing Media fat chance that any black conservative has of ever being a candidate for president.

The Left never stopped waging their culture war on “middle” and “rural” America.

They want to turn the average American into an effete caricature of what they imagine “cultured” and “sophisticated” are based on their misconception about “class” being a matter of sophistry rather than honesty, loyalty and sincerity.

LIBERAL BIAS, LYING BY OMISSION, CONDESCENSION, SMEARS, DISTORTIONS AND JUST PLAIN LYING are the stock in trade of the SF Chronicle’s reporters (most of those with a political beat).

Here we have a routine lie by the reporter:

“This version won’t be as explicit as conservative Pat Buchanan’s 1992 GOP convention call for a “cultural war” or even the 2004 race...”

Here is what Buchanan actually said. He acknowledged a cultural war that was already ongoing as any honest person should admit.

“My friends, this election is about much more than who gets what. It is about who we are. It is about what we believe. It is about what we stand for as Americans. There is a religious war going on in our country for the soul of America. It is a cultural war, as critical to the kind of nation we will one day be as was the Cold War itself. And in that struggle for the soul of America, Clinton & Clinton are on the other side, and George Bush is on our side. And so, we have to come home, and stand beside him.”
