Sarah Palin could be an elusive target for Democrats.
The plan for Sarah Palin—rock-star Republican—was to do a series of swing-state events with John McCain, record the campaign's regular weekend radio address and then go home. "We kind of shanghaied her out of Alaska," Steve Schmidt, the McCain-Palin campaign manager, told me. "She needs to go back for a few days." There are personal reasons. Her son is shipping off for Iraq. With a newborn of her own, a pregnant daughter and a state to run, "Sarah Barracuda" has to get her affairs in order.
But there are political reasons, too. She needs time to study McCain's views and bone up on foreign policy before debating Joe Biden. At home she can more easily avoid interrogation by GOP enemy No. 1, the media. And by hunkering down in Alaska, she's also less visible to Barack Obama's campaign and its allies. The moose hunter of the North, Palin is now the hunted one.
She's an elusive target. Her home state is a tougher political racetrack than Lower 48 pundits appreciate, and she has a respectable approval rating there. GOP delegates in St. Paul fell in love with her, and they form a bulwark to protect her if she trips up. Her stage skills are obvious, her charisma electric, her freshness an advantage. She delivered her barb-filled acceptance speech with what David Axelrod, Obama's campaign manager, told me was "snide efficiency." And as a woman and the mother of five, Palin is an opponent whom male rivals need to be careful about attacking.
Still, Democrats dare not issue Palin a pass—she's too dangerous a foe. Normally vice presidential candidates fade into the background. Nobody is expecting that with Palin; indeed, her newfound celebrity has made even Obama look dull.

I’ve been wondering about that — it will quickly turn into an attack point for the libs if everything is not kept very ship-shape in terms of Alaska’s govt. Isn’t her Lt. Governor running for Congress? It may not be easy just to delegate a lot to him, although one hopes she has a good Chief of Staff for handling all of the routine stuff.
There is a movie you MUST SEE (if you haven’t already) called Mystery Alaska. It is about small-town Alaska and hockey and is just hilarious, but also shows the little town up against the snooty national media who go out there and get tormented. It has always been one of my top 10 movies, quirky and fun and Alaska. I need to watch it again. One of the few good ones. Go rent it. You’ll be glad you did.
I want to know how many agents are capable of keeping up with Sarah Palin as she resumes her jogging 7-10 miles a day. AND, what is the DC crowd going to think as she waltzes around the district?

Yeah, just another day in the life of lying MSM hacks...... 80+% is not merely "respectable" Howard Fineman!!! You know it and we know it. It is sensational, at the top of the nation's Governors and at the top for virtually all types of public officials.
Howard, why don't you ask the "9% Congress" whether they could be satisfied with a "respectable" approval rating of 80+%???

There is so much arrogance in his life that he is not going to give Gov. Palin to privilege she deserves.
Ted should resign and allow the Governor to appoint her replacement.
Instead, voters will turn on a RINO from Alaska and allow the democrat to occupy the Senate seat.
Whenever I hear John McCain talking about Republicans who put themselves first, I know he is talking about those like Stevens.
The Good ole boys are still mad at Gov. Palin for knocking off Frank Murkowski.
They may have to do it like a relay team. But they will do it with a smile.
The happiest USSS agents I ever met were those that had served Ronald Reagan. I expect we will soon see a lot more smiles on the faces of some of these agents.
Newsweek does not get it, they are blinded by their own horrible philosophy of life. The country is much more pro-life then they realize. In particular, the voters in the swing states, Ohio, most of Pennsylvania, Iowa, parts of Michigan, Wisconsin etc. are actually quite socially conservative.
The good news is the Alaska legislature session for the year was earlier:
“2008 Session: January 15, 2008 to April 13, 2008 “
and of coure with cell phones and faxes she can handle most things on the road. But I view sending her back a couple of times a strategy to underline how inexperienced in administration Obama is.
They are out there. Often they have to take their lead from the party in power. Many had to hide their personal views during the Clinton years.
It is really a tough job because of all the games that some politicians play and the agents need to ignore it.
My original point was that a few blessed agents will be able to experience the reality of Alaska.
Hopefully, after her election, she and Todd will maintain some residence in Wasilla, though they are going to look great in the VP residence.
Todd will want to run his snow machine right down Mass Ave after the first snow fall.
I cant stand a lot of the shallow comments some people have made about her.
She isnt a rock star. We have enough of them. She is just Sarah Palin being Sarah Palin. and that is why we love her.
She is our Sarah. I dont just mean conservatives. She is Americas’ Sarah. :)
She is now ours to protect.

I was curious about that. George Bush and Bill Clinton both had lower approval ratings from their states as governors.
