WSJ: Obama Won't Ban Guns, 'I Don't Have the Votes in Congress'
newsbusters.org ^ | September 6, 2008 | Tim Graham

At the OnTap blog, Cam Edwards passes along a Wall Street Journal report from the campaign trail in Pennsylvania on Friday that found Barack Obama digging himself a rhetorical hole on gun control, even in front of a hand-picked crowd.

“If you’ve got a gun in your house, I’m not taking it,’’ Obama said. But the Illinois senator could still see skeptics in the crowd, particularly on the faces of several men at the back of the room.

So he tried again. “Even if I want to take them away, I don’t have the votes in Congress,’’ he said. “This can’t be the reason not to vote for me. Can everyone hear me in the back? I see a couple of sportsmen back there. I’m not going to take away your guns.’’

So Obama went from saying he wouldn't take away guns...to suggesting he wanted to, but Congress won't let him. So he goes from suggesting to gun-rights voters that they should be worried about him as president, to suggesting they better elect a gun-rights Congress to restrain his gun-controlling impulses.

This can’t be the reason not to vote for me

Is that a question or a statement?

No, he won’t take them away. He’ll just try to make it impossible for you to actually DO anything with them.

I’ve heard the NRA has a big pot of money they plan to spend on this election. Their ads are great: I still remember their 2004 ad with the poodle wearing a pink “Kerry” sweater with the caption: “This dog don’t hunt.”

The 2nd Amendment isn't about sportsmen.

What a commie.

Obama would probably tell white supremacists that Hitler was right about Jews (and Negroes) if he thought it would get them to vote for him. He probably has a “Ban Handguns” button in one pocket and an NRA button in the other, and he wears whichever he thinks his audience will like.

I have never seen a political candidate (and this includes Jimmy Carter, Al Gore, and John Kerry) for whom I have less respect. Obama is quite frankly scum.

Obamination only wants to do away with our military. You can’t believe a thing this man says. A gun ban ranks high on his long list of priorities, make no mistake!

Obama said in effect if he had the votes, he would ban guns. He's not really pro Second Amendment!

- “Even if I want to take them away, I don’t have the votes in Congress,’

Sure sounds like a ringing endorsement to me! - what a dufus!

The infamous left handed Mauser. It shows how much hillary’s people know about guns. They can’t even post a correct image.

“Even if I want to take them away, I don’t have the votes in Congress,’’

This from a person who claims to have been a constitutional law professor.

A layman's knowledge of the Constitution and the nation's history knows that even if 100% of the members of congress were in his party they and he cannot remove our guns.

Very telling as to where he really stands.

He fails to mention his Supreme Court picks could affect it.

NRA-ILA Grassroots Alert Vol. 15, No. 36
Get The Facts On Barack Obama and Joe Biden

As we pass into the home stretch of this year's critically important election, two things are certain: First, the winner of the election will have a profound effect on your Second Amendment rights, and second, you need to make your voice heard and protect your freedom by making sure that you and your friends, family members, neighbors, and coworkers VOTE!

It's time for gun owners to take a closer look at just where Barack Obama stands on issues related to the Second Amendment. To that end, NRA-PVF has designed a new, comprehensive, and very informative Web site - GunBanObama.com - to serve as a resource for the facts on Barack Obama’s Second Amendment stance

Have you listened to the actually audio? I heard it on Hugh Hewitt and it was absolutely pathetic.

Obama was stammering his entire way through his whole explanation of why he’s not for taking away guns that no gun owner could possibly believe that he actually believes what he is saying, then he compounds it with the “I couldn’t even if I wanted to” line which is just hilarious.

If you had any doubts about where Obama stood on the 2nd amendment, just listening to that will clarify everything. Even a fraud like John Kerry did a much better job of at least pretending he was for gun rights.

Thanks. I’m not a gunowner, but I sent them a contribution in 2004 after the poodle ad, just because I enjoyed the ad, and my late father was a lifetime member. I’ll send them another.
