The tip of southeastern Louisiana is now within the large "cone-of-error" forecast for Hurricane Ike's landfall.

See the National Hurricane Center's tracking map

...

Current predictions, subject to large fluctuations over the coming days, call for Ike to be in the southeastern Gulf of Mexico by Wednesday morning.

...

The cone of error displays the wide area where Ike could land five days from now. Currently, the outer limits of the cone stretches from Plaquemines Parish to Florida.

Florida may be off the hook for Hurricane Ike, except the Florida Keys, though it is not clear if Southern Florida is safe from this storm.

Storm appears to be headed for the "power channel" in the Gulf of Mexico that Cat 5 storms Hurricane Katrina (2005) and Hurricane Camille (1969) went through... Seems like Hurricane Rita (2005) also went through the "power channel" of the Gulf...

Tracking the storm...

From the Weather Channel website
Animated infrared satellite maps:

Most of these they update about every 20-25 minutes. I recommend using a screen enlargement feature if you have one. I typically zoom to 200%.

I'm told they might be slow to download on dialup.

I think we still have people from NO here in Mobile. They want FEMA to pay for their motels and gasoline.

I was wondering how long it would be before they began demanding payment to evacuate.

It’s absolutely unimportant - the Republican Convention is over and it just isn’t the same blaming Bush anymore.

That is really bad news.

After Gustav the drive-bys were interviewing evacuees at a makeshift shelter. (Hey they had to find somebody who was unhappy, didn't they?) Nothing but whining and complaining about how bad they had it. After all, they had to sleep on cots and walk all the way across the parking lot to use the porta-johns!

They were all saying they were going to stay home next time.

I heard that one woman interviewed was unhappy that staying at the shelter they her food and a place to sleep, but she could not understand why they were not giving her money to stay at the shelter...
