Republicans Lack Heart! (File Cease & Desist for 'Barracuda' Song)
TMZ ^ | September 5, 2008 | TMZ Staff

Ann and Nancy Wilson are p*ssed at the Republican Party and have fired off a cease and desist letter to the McCain/Palin campaign.

Specifically, the Heart women are upset that the GOP has used their classic "Barracuda" as a theme song for Sarah Palin. TMZ obtained a statement from Heart's rep, who says "The Republican campaign did not ask for permission to use the song, nor would they have been granted that permission."

The statement goes on: "We have asked the Republican campaign publicly not to use our music. We hope our wishes will be honored."

I'm reminded of Chrissie Hynde being very upset about Rush's use of The Pretenders' Ohio with its long intro as his show opener. Ha ha ha!

You should be prepared to repeat the ASCAP statement several times over the next few days on this and other threads.

Common folks are usually unaware of the system.

Apparantly there are entertainers also unaware of how they get paid!

Which really isn't surprising. With few exceptions no one wastes money on giving pop singers educations anyway.

Does Hart own the song? Usually artists sell their rights to their labels, who then may sell to whoever they please.

Well I showed them. I just removed them from my myspace page playlist!

SO THERE! lol You'd think they'd like a boost in sales of their old music, but I guess they have enough money.

I don’t think there’s an appropriate ZZ Top song out there for political situations. “Legs”, “Pearl Necklace”, Haha.

Actually, from this picture, one can see that Ann and Nancy have plenty to gripe about:

I would like to hear them do "Rock and Roll". Regardless of their politics they have (or had) powerful and pleasant sounding voices and I have enjoyed many of their songs over the years.

I have a copy of them doing "Battle of Evermore" and it's one of my favorite Heart recordings.

I'm not ready to shred their discs yet. I try to respect and enjoy an artist's work based on the value of the performance. There is a sense of conflict when I hear of things in their character or political leanings that go against my values, such as their draft dodging history or this bit of meaningless posturing they are doing over the RNC. But to me they haven't "crossed the line" in the way that others (such as the Dixie Chicks) have done.

I download quite a bit of music and after hearing Barracuda last night it reminded me of all the Heart music I haven’t heard in years. Glad I saw this post before I went over to itunes so Heart isn’t burdened with any of my evil conservative royalty money. Instead, I think a few Gretchen Wilson songs will go into my “purchased” folder.

Hey Heart, the 80’s called and wants its music back!

Song copywrites depend on when it was published.

The copyright for a published song is different than the copyright for recorded music. The last time I dug around ASCAP and BM(C; I? don't recall), it was about 7 years. And the copyright for songs published before 1978 was not 95 years. I wrote and copyrighted music prior to '78, and I think it was 10 years, then the copyright office changed it to 7 years.

I’m with you about politics and music. Unless they do something totally insane, I don’t really care.

Nancy Wilson of Heart said: “’Barracuda’ was written in the late 70s as a scathing rant against the soulless, corporate nature of the music business, particularly for women.”

Funny how Ann and Nancy sold their souls to Capitol Records back in the mid-80’s with their smash hit album “Heart” (with such hits as “These Dreams”, “Never”, “What About Love?” and “Nothing At All” written by other songwriters) and wore more hairspray, makeup and flashy outfits than Boy George would wear, made millions of dollars thanks to the image-makers, and now they blame “soulless corporations in the music business”? Please, ladies!

————”Screw ‘em! Use “Stranglehold” by the Nuge instead - a much better song.”——————

I know it is a vulgar song but I think "Cat Scratch Fever" would be more appropriate.
