Markets Are Booing McCain's VP Choice
Investor's Business Daily ^ | 2008-09-05 | John Tamny

Alongside last Friday's announcement that Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin would be John McCain's running mate, the Dow Jones industrial average fell 170 points. Stocks have shown weakness ever since.

While there are many factors that move markets, a looming electoral contest between a tax-hiking Democrat versus a nominally pro-growth Republican surely weighs heavily on market psyche. It says here that the markets concluded that whatever John McCain's true economic views, he has handed the election to the anti-growth candidate with his selection of Palin.

Stocks were presumably booing a running-mate choice that will greatly aid Barack Obama's election in November. Running against a candidate suddenly much less credible thanks to the Palin selection, Obama will now have much less reason to temper the liberal rhetoric that's put him within striking distance of the White House.

No they don't but they can hurt a candidates chance or help.

As I said, It would be extraordinary indeed, for this VP magic to "stick". As Palin is relegated to her back seat, and less lime light, the lime light invariably must return to the ugly little man who is currently hiding behind her skirts. When that happens, her value decreases, and his must sustain the difference, which, as it has already been demonstrated, is an unlikelihood.

At some point, this will return to being about the presidential candidate, and his qualifications, which are *not*.

Note to John Tamny: Hey, Pal, this market was getting clobbered long before Palin was selected and the market forces driving this bear market are not at all tied to her or McCain’s planned policies or the “threat” of their election. Hopefully, we are going into a capitulation phase and the market will find a bottom soon — when housing has bottomed and the banking system’s fall-out is complete, the market repair will take place.

Trying to blame recent market weakness on McCain’s selection — and then to make the argument that it makes McCain much less electable when her selection is proving just the opposite — is a bit on the ridiculous side, don’t you think?

Nonsense! McCain’s pick for VP is way down in the noise in terms of moving the markets. In fact, the markets will rally wildly when they determine that McCain will win.

Obama would be the bear rally signal of the century (and we’re only eight years into it).

It’s WAY too early to tell which way the election will go. Things are certainly looking much BETTER, not worse, for McCain following the Palin pick.

McCain/Palin ‘08!

The IBD editorial page is conservative. The rest of the paper, including the CEO, is LIBEAL.

Big business has been at the “government contract” trough forever.

The markets have concluded that McCain/Palin will win and fear that they will, indeed, cut back on pork and earmarks.

"At some point, this will return to being about the presidential candidate, and his qualifications, which are *not*."

Sure and as long as 'The One" is so much better qualified and will lower taxes and actually stand up against the bad guys and be an advocate for the unborn and ...oh wait.

And the reason the left and their pocket pals in the media are trying to obliterate Palin is because she is meaningless and it being August and all they really have nothing betterr to do...I have that right?

Ah yes, the smell of an Obamabot and McCain hater.

Market is being effected mainly right now by speculation that the jobs report is going to be bad. And retailers are reporting that “back-to-school” sales were sluggish this year.

Awww, why you wanna be a buzzkill for these tools, man?

;-)

People do not vote for VP. The only time it mutters to a great extent is when it is a really bad choice. I very much prefer Palin to McCain and Obama in spite of her big goof re Bristol's pregnancy, a scandal that could have been minimized. What does it say about her judgment and values?

Yeah, lucky you caught yourself, as McCain isn't qualified either, won't lower taxes either, has been an opportunist at best on Life, and will only stand up to the bad guys over seas...

And the reason the left and their pocket pals in the media are trying to obliterate Palin is because she is meaningless and it being August and all they really have nothing betterr to do...I have that right?

I did not say she was meaningless at all. I said she must fade, as she must. Elections are about presidents.

Ah yes, the smell of an Obamabot and McCain hater.

Nah, just a Woolly Mammoth. Like all elephant types, blessed with a long memory and good sense; attributes which RINOs obviously lack, as well as being shortsighted.

As to hating McCain, is it any wonder that a Conservative should despise a socialist? Does it some how surprise you that a Conservative would not find pleasure in a man who undermined the 1st Amendment, and is hell bent upon relieving the American People of their sovereignty?

What rubbish. For the stocks to decline that much on the Palin news, then investors would be anticipating an election win by the Republicans, something that is by no means sure.

This is simply another variation of the Democratic attacks on Sarah Palin. Instead of Bush’s fault trope, it’s now Sarah’s fault.

If the street is so worried about Obama, they should stop contributing to him and the Rat party. Alot of those young ones on the street are contributing to the One because it's hip to say you are supporting Obama at the Manhattan hang outs and cocktail parties.

I guess most of those fools don't mind paying one of the highest business tax rates in the industrialized countries.

The market was responding to the retail numbers and jobs reports. McCain had nothing to do with it.

Indeed I am a Rep and a Conservative but I also have a modicum of common sense and have looked at the reality of an Obama victory and it’s subsequent consequences.

You and others seem to think that no matter what an Obama Administration coupled with a liberal Congress does, can be undone in a couple of years. You are apparently unfamiliar with the treachery of the enemy, either that nor you are one of them. The left thinks nothing of changing rules or making law to suit their nefarious purpose. What makes you so sure their WILL be a next election as we have known them in the past? Suppose, JUST SUPPOSE you are wrong?

It is ludicrous to say McCain is for raising taxes because he voted against Bushes cuts. He wanted corresponding cuts in spending to shrink government and offset any possibility of an initial revenue shortfall that can be caused by tax cuts until they spread throughout the economy and spur spending and growth as they are intended to do. It has been McCains position all along and doesn’t cost him in my book. That said comparing the history and future policies of McCain and Obama leaves no doubt who between the 2 is the better choice/ And now with palin in the wings as his number 2 there is a real shot at our guys being the first to seat a woman in the WH. A race between Hillary and Palin would be classic, a true confrontation between “Beauty and the Beast”

You are another one issue (taxes) voter and seemingly don’t want to look at the life issue or the security issue, both of which are strongly on the side of McCain.

If they want a tax and spend socialist, they have no right to complain about confiscatory taxes and oppressive regulation in the future.

Nobody sane votes for confiscatory taxes and oppressive regulation on themselves. They only vote for that when it's targeted at you.
