I support Sarah Palin and was happy when I heard that McCain picked her. I missed the speech and forgot to TiVO it, but read the full text of her speech on the Net. Reading the text, I was impressed.

Then when the full speech hit YouTube, I watched it — and somehow was less impressed. Same words, but I find her voice is annoying and her vocal inflections a bit sanctimonious and grating. KIND-of-HAS-this-UP-and-DOWN-SING-song-QUAlity-to-it that gets on my nerves. Oh well. At least the text of the speech was good, and if she ad-libbed some of it, that’s reasonably impressive.

Her whole message to special-needs parents — that they’ll have a friend and advocate in government — is all well and good, but the Dems DO have a point: She has five kids. One of them is a special-needs kid, which means that that kid in particular NEEDS her mom to be there for her. With all of the massive responsibilities of the VP office, and the travel schedule, will Palin really be able to be there for her kids. I would think not. No, her kids, including the Downs Syndrome child, will be cared for primarily by others. That doesn’t mean their dad, either. Hubby is a commercial fisherman. Anyone who’s ever watched “The Deadliest Catch” knows how that job goes. Hubby won’t be around too much either — he’ll be out making his living.

I know that a lot of people around here don’t like to admit it when the Dems actually do bring up a good point — but I can’t help but wonder how many people would, given the same situation, actually take a job with one of the most demanding schedules in the world, while having a young Downs Syndrome kid (and other children) to take care of. I know I wouldn’t — It would break my heart if I weren’t able to be there for my kids, especially a special needs kid.

I’ll vote McCain/Palin, but I’ll also pray for her kids.

Nope; the teleprompter was confirmed as working fine.

I missed this post before.

Suspected as much, though.

Oops...I said “her” I meant “him” — her son Trig, that is.

The original story was not that the telepromptor was broken. The original story was that the person running it was not timing the applause breaks properly and there was applause in places that were unexpected- as a result the telepromptor was ahead of or behind where she was in her speech at different times. At the time it happened several people pointed it out, including some reporters.

I think the same thing happened to McCain last night, at one point he repeated a line and I wondered. I think this happens with telepromptors, and people who speak frequently with one learn to deal with it. I do think the telepromptor did out of time with her and I think it was to her credit that she handled it when she is not used to dealing with a telepromptor.

Just out of curiousity why do you keep posting negative things about her? Who are you supporting in this election?

This thread has grown some. When do we find out that the teleprompter operator is a member of the Film Actors’ Guild and this was deliberate?

Are you being serious??? No way in h*** will the spouse of the Vice President of the United States be on the deck of one of the Deadliest Catch boats! His “earning a living” days will be put on hold, I’m certain.
Also, relating to the child, I would anticipate that the Palins have thought this through - they don’t seem like starry-eyed naifs. Why don’t we have the decency to let their family make decisions for their family.
Furthermore, little Trig will probably be the single best cared for Down’s child in the world! He’ll have his mother (most of the time), father (probably full time), teenage sisters, grandparents, other family - I don’t believe they would mind spending some time in the Naval Observatory helping their Vice President. Also, don’t forget the staff, nannies, clinical care providers (speech therapy, tutors, etc) that will be at Trig’s beck and call. And, as Newt Gingrich pointed out, Mom’s office is a 10 minute motorcade ride from home. I anticipate that the child will be extremely well cared for and, I would predict that as he grows he will become the poster child for special-needs children both in our country and around the world. Just think of the great things for these kids that Trig and his family will accomplish - first, by noting that knee-jerk abortion is not a necessity and that they have (as many others have posted eloquently about on FR) innate beautiful qualities that are mostly only known to people who live with them.

Yeah, I know hubby’s life will change too.

Doesn’t really change my opinion, though. I really doubt that mom will be able to be there “most of the time.” Pretty tough to be a full-time or even part-time parent when you’re the VP OF THE UNITED STATES.

Full-time Dad or no full-time Dad, little Trig can’t be “extremely well cared-for” if mom is too busy to be around, in my view. Sorry.

we have friends who have raised their family by having the dad stay home and the mom work full time... they've managed to raise a fine family... the children are wonderful, respectful and love Jesus... the mom is not VP of the US but is a high-level executive at a well-known lab... their kids are extremely well-cared for...

sorry...

Well, goodie for them.

It seems that some posters here have no idea what kind of demanding schedule a VP of the United States has to keep. It ain’t no picnic. And a special needs kid has...special needs (go figure) which demand quite a bit more time and patience than a normal kid.

yes it is goodie for them... and it can be for the Palins, too... some people just cannot help but play Holy Spirit in people's lives... you're kind of like the liberals: you know what's best for the Palins... even better than they know... i guess you can be likened to big government, too...

p.s.--i also know two families with down syndrome babies... the level of care required varies for each DS child, just like it varies for different children who do not have DS...

No, I am NOT like the liberals, and I am NOT trying to play God. Stop making unsubstantiated assumptions.

As I originally posted, I simply wonder how much time Mrs. Palin will have in her busy schedule to devote to being a mom. It’s a logical thought process, not really an emotional one. Her schedule will be jam-packed. It was already pretty busy as Governor — now it will be much, much more so.

Nuvista’s post actually (ironically) went a long way toward describing my concerns: An army of caretakers will be at their beck and call. Well, that’s just great...An army of professional caretakers does not replace a mom. And being a short motorcade’s drive from your office to your home doesn’t much matter when your schedule is filled with flights to who knows where and non-stop meetings.

I am aware that the level of care varies for each DS child...that is obvious because each child is different. But the child still has DS and still needs special care, no matter which way you try to rationalize it. And Trig is not her only child.

I hope that I will be pleasantly surprised and that Sarah will have enough much-needed time to devote to her kids. Like I said in my original post, I will pray for them and hope for the best.

“This thread has grown some. When do we find out that the teleprompter operator is a member of the Film Actors’ Guild and this was deliberate?”

This is the reason why the speech is also written and in front of the speaker.

Stop making unsubstantiated assumptions.

you're making assumptions... you've made the assumption that Trig will not be well-cared for... you've made the assumption that even his father will not be around because he's going to continue his current job... yes, you are like big libeal government... you know what's better for this particular family than they do... even though they've thought about it and have made decisions for themselves, you believe they can't make the right decisions for themselves... at least, that's how you come across...

There you go, making unsubstantiated accusations based on your own assumptions, again.

I did NOT make the assumption that Trig will not be well-cared for. I am simply concerned about the availability of his parents — and of his mom specifically.

And if there is one thing that I absolutely CAN’T STAND, it is people like you that:

1. Put words in other people’s mouths
2. Label other people based upon your own extremely narrow perceptions of what a person can and cannot be.

I am a fan of this website, but nevertheless there are way, WAY too many people on Free Republic who seem to think that there are only two types of people in the world — staunch, upright conservatives and scumbag liberals. Therefore, by their logic, if anything is said that even slightly sounds to them like a liberal tagline or argument — BAM! — that poster is labeled a liberal. Yep, I am now “just like a liberal” in your eyes. Because if I’m not 100% one way, then I must be 100% the other.

Which is absolute baloney. So, expressing some concern for the fact that Sarah will be very busy, and hoping and praying that she has enough time to devote to her children, makes me just like big liberal government, eh? Wondering how she is going to juggle all of her myriad responsibilities along with motherhood makes me someone who wants to play God and who “knows what’s better for the family more than they do,” is that it?

Your type makes me sick. The major, crucial difference between what I posted and the liberals that you are wrongly accusing me of being a part of, is this: The liberals are callously EXPLOITING the fact that she has 5 kids, one of which has DS, in order to deliberately cast judgment and doubt upon her overall fitness to serve. They pounce on these types of details in order to undermine their opponents.

I, on the other hand, simply brought up a concern that I am sure that even the Palins themselves had before taking this on. These are the facts: The job is extremely demanding and has an incredibly full schedule. She has five kids, and Downs Syndrome kids need special care. I had also heard that the father would still be involved in his commercial fishing business to some extent — not giving it up completely — although this will probably be from a management level from afar, I assume. Perhaps I heard wrong on that, but it is no matter. Simply from the perspective of a mother’s being available to her children, a purely logical thought process would come to the conclusion that the VP position may place more time constraints and stresses on parenthood. Duh...that should be obvious to any logical thinker, no matter what side you’re on.

So I brought up this as a concern — NOT as a political football, NOT as a judgmental “I know better than the Palins” sermon, certainly NOT as a liberal who wants to control family matters, and NOT as someone who thinks that people are incapable of making the right decisions for themselves. Those are all absolute ASSUMPTIONS and wrongly-made conclusions that you have drawn, based upon your narrow way of thinking.

No, I was simply speaking as a PERSON — not a conservative, not a liberal, just another person — who hopes and prays that things work out for the Palins and especially for their children, in light of the demands that they will face.

Now are you going to tell me that there is something wrong with that?

Run along now.
