Sarah Palin had two jobs to do when she stepped to the podium Wednesday night in St. Paul to accept the Republican nomination for vice president.
Her first task was to energize the party's conservative base. On that count: Mission accomplished.
"It was dynamite," said Linda Ruff of Halifax. "She knocked it out of the park tonight, without question. That's what she had to do, and she did it."
Ruff, first vice chairwoman of the Dauphin County Republican Party, has been involved in GOP politics for more than 20 years. In all those years, she has never seen anyone who has energized the party's base as Palin has.
"Sarah is exactly what the Republican Party needs," Ruff said.
That energy was evident from the reaction of the delegates in the Xcel Energy Center, who already were fired up over Palin, even before she stepped to the podium to tell her hockey-mom-to-governor story.
"I have seen the enthusiasm level go up since she was named," analyst G. Terry Madonna of Franklin & Marshall College said in a telephone interview from the convention. "They are excited about this choice."
Palin's second job was to help the McCain campaign win over disaffected Hillary Rodham Clinton supporters.
How well she did in that task won't be clear until the next round of polling comes in, but Ruff is certain Palin won on that count as well.
"Thirty to 37 percent of Hillary supporters, because of Sarah, will support John McCain," Ruff predicted.
A Rasmussen Reports poll released Wednesday before Palin's speech indicates Palin will have her work cut out, though. Forty-one percent of the women polled said Palin's choice makes them less likely to vote for McCain. Thirty-one percent said they were more likely to support him. That is a shift from earlier polls, which were almost even.
Carol Keating, a Clinton supporter from Derry Twp., watched Palin's speech and was impressed by her presence.
"I respect her fight, her passion, her love of the town where she was mayor. I like that she is not Washington, not part of that good-old-boy, cocktail party crowd. She has broken a barrier, as I thought Hillary did," Keating said.
Woohoo!!!!
I’m guessing more like 35-55% (or more!)
