But the economy is not all; the GOP's last best hope remains identity politics. In a year when the Democrats have an African American presidential nominee, the Republicans now more than ever are the white folks' party, the party that delays the advent of our multicultural future, the party of the American past. Republican conventions have long been bastions of de facto Caucasian exclusivity, but coming right after the diversity of Denver, this year's GOP convention is almost shockingly -- un-Americanly -- white. Long term, this whiteness is a huge problem. This year, however, whiteness is the only way Republicans cling to power. If the election is about the economy, they're cooked -- and their silence this week on nearly all things economic means that they know it.

This man is a racist, plain and simple. If a writer were to turn things around and make the same claims about blacks or gays and the Democrat Party, he would be looking for a new job before the day were through.
Besides being racist, Meyerson seems to have forgotten Colin Powell, Alberto Gonzalez, Clarence Thomas, Condi Rice, and now Bobby Jindal. All are 'people of color' who have had signigficant roles in gov't and who happen to not be Democrats.
I was throughly disgusted by the race baiting of Meyerson and it is just one more reason to not read the Wash Post.
left race-baiter ping
Will read this later. Thanks.
we wants and hopes that everyone else has forgotten about Colin Powell, Alberto Gonzalez, Clarence Thomas, Condi Rice, and now Bobby Jindal.
Pigs like Meyerson have run white people out of the Democratic Party.
Yet funny how they want us back every April 15 and during election years.
This guy is a total moron. By every measurable number you care to pick the Bush Economy has been FAR better then the Clinton economy.
The current unemployment rate is better then the unemployment rate of 6 of Clintons 8 years
Palin/Jindal 2012-2016
How “old white men” is that ???
Has anyone told Harold that Americans of any ethnicity are free to join the Republican Party? He makes the GOP sound like some kind of private club.
You’re forgetting the ‘new direction’ we’ve been fighting since the Dems won congress 2006. (Command Economics)
Check the facts/data.
All the sectors that are doing badly, banking, housing, energy, health care.. have done so because of Government!
Washington Post is D.C.’s New York Times...Nothing new to see here...
But 99% of all Blacks voting for their half-brother isn’t racist?
I'm going to be brutally blunt: America rose to preeminence and became what it is, due mostly to the white culture and its concepts of freedom, democracy, economics and technology. Yes, there were other cultural influences, but the white culture was the dominant one. I predict the multicultural future won't be so "pretty".
This harold meyerson person is blind in one eye and can’t see out of the other if he doesn’t see any people of color at the Republican convention.
I watched the convention last night and saw a lot of people of color. Including John McCain’s beautiful young adopted daughter from Bangladesh!
I intend to write to the Washington Post and demand that they fire old white guy Harold Meyerson and give his position to a deserving person of color.
How dare Meyerson sit on his iron rice bowl blocking the way to our multicultural future?!
This writer got a little fired up after watching the P.Diddly YouTube vid?
>While I think this is a dumb article, the point that the GOP has to work a litle harder to get some non-whites into the party (that share our values, of course) isn’t a bad one.
I admit I’m a little disappointed after seeing the convention this year- there are almost no minorities. I don’t know why this isn’t a higher priority. Bush made it a priority in 2000- and the convention was diverse. The convention is the main chance to show America what we represent- not done well in my opinion.
If minorities don’t share our values, why would we want them in our party?
